The extracts from the novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls", translated into Russian, were scheduled to be published in Znamya magazine in 1941. However, the outbreak of war in June of that year disrupted these plans. Simultaneously, Hemingway faced criticism for the novel and was accused of slander by the Spanish communists. It is believed that Josef Stalin personally read the complete translation of the novel and commented, "Interesting. Printing is forbidden".This original, draft, and pre-proofreading typescript, encompassing the first 18 chapters (with the last chapter lacking an ending), served as the basis for the two-volume edition published in 1962 (without any censorship cuts). This is the translation from Swedish children's writer and one of the most influential picture book artists of 1940-1950s Eva Billow (1902-1993). The story is about the large family of hedgehogs and their mother, who forgot that hedgehogs hibernate from autumn to spring. The original fairy tale was published in 1948. The book was illustrated by May Miturich (Miturich-Khlebnikov, 1925–2008), an artist, nephew of futurist poet Velimir Khlebnikov and son of avant-garde artist Vera Khlebnikova. He studied at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute, where later he taught. In 2005 Mirutich was awarded the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun. The translator Irina Elkonin-Johansson moved from the USSR to Sweden in 1962, the year after the book's publication. The book is from the children's collection of Inna Shmeleva (1929-2020), an artist, who studied under Ely Bielutin, the founder of The New Reality artistic academy. Czech humorist Jaroslav Hašek (1883-1923) became well-known mainly for his novel The Good Soldier Švejk. It has been translated into about 60 languages and became a classic, especially in the USSR. In 1915 Hašek was captured on the Russian front and recruited to serve in the voluntary Czechoslovak Legions, formed in Russia to struggle against Austria-Hungary. He wrote reportages from the army for magazines and newspapers, feuilletons and articles in Russian. Hašek took part in the organization of international units of the Red Army and participated in combat operations even in Siberia. The Good Soldier Svejk was created between 1921 and 1923 after his return from Russia. First Hašek's book in Russian, The Good Soldier Švejk, was issued in 1926. This collection of verses is devoted to the oppressed people in India, Africa, and China. The author, Hungarian poet Antal Hidas (1899-1980) lived in the USSR in 1925-1959. During The Great Purge he was arrested and imprisoned. Preface was prepared by Hungarian Communist journalist and sinologist Lajos Magyar (1891-1937/1940?). In 1922 he emigrated to the Soviet Union and served as deputy chief of the Oriental Secretariat of the Executive Committee of the Communist International. In the early 1930s he read lectures on problems of colonialism in the Institute of Red Professors. Magyar was arrested in 1935 and executed.These verses were translated by Alexander Room (1898-1943), a poet and translator, elder brother of Soviet film director Mikhail Room. Signed for print on November 24, 1948.Pasternak finished King Lear's translation in the fall of 1947. He described King Lear as 'quiet tragedy' in which love is the main victim.
In first edition the Duke of Albany expresses very dangerous idea for Stalin's era: 'Let's follow this shadow example Of longevity and long-suffering'. For second edition of translation appeared later in 1949 in Detgiz's edition Pasternak changed only the last two lines: the tragedy ended with the words: 'The old man got through it hard and inflexible. We will never be able to experience it'.
The script for Soviet drama film King Lear (1971), directed by Grigori Kozintsev, was based on Pasternak's translation.

One of two first editions of Wells's The War That Will End War (1914) published in 1915 in Russia. The only edition of this translation. Signed and inscribed by the translator, an employee of the Petrograd Military Censorship Commission and staff captain Grigoriy Nazarov to colleague, lieutenant Medar: 'For lieutenant Medar, military censorship officer in the memory from the translator G. Nazarov 13/IX-16 Petrograd'. This inscript is the only one possibility to identify the translator who wasn't metioned in the edition.It was the only translation prepared by G. Nazarov. During The Great War he served in a fortress artillery regiment and was awarded the Order of Saint Anna (2nd class) in 1916. Wells published a number of articles in London newspapers immediately after the outbreak of the War, which destroyed the old life and open way for new advances. In good condition, rebacked, new spin, cracks on the front cover, slightly water-stained to the covers and page margins, stains.
The anthology includes five fragments from Joyce's Ulysses (p. 65-94; episodes 1, 7, 12, 17 and 18).
Extracts were translated by Valentin Zhitomirsky (1896-1977), who 'tried to tell the Russian reader of the large Joyce's novel in a summary form and in the form of a collage at the same time'. Later Soviet translators offered only separate episodes from the novel.
First complete Russian translation of Ulysses appeared in 1989 only and became 'a sign of liberation in Russia'.

This verse by the Azerbaijani female writer Nigar Rafibeyli (1913-1981) war translated by the Jewish born poet Mikhail Svetlov (Scheinkman; 1903-1964) and published in 1959 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The second edition of the verse was illustrated by one of the pioneers of Azerbaijani book design and poster artist Amir Hajiyev (1899-1972).The book is from the children's collection of Inna Shmeleva (1929-2020), an artist, who studied under Ely Bielutin, the founder of The New Reality artistic academy. In 1962 Shmeleva participated in the 30th anniversary of the Moscow Union of Artist at the Central Exhibition Hall (Manège) which was severely criticized by Nikita Khrushchev. This event marked the end of the period called as the Khrushchev Thaw. We couldn't trace any copy of this edition in USA or European libraries via OCLC.

First and only edition.These verses by a prominent Bulgarian children's author Assen Bossev (1913-1997) were translated by Irina Tokmakova (1929-2018), a talented writer of children's books, poet, playwright and wife of the illustrator Lev Tokmakov. She was a member of the Hans Christian Andersen Award and served on the IBBY Executive Committee.The book was illustrated by the female graphic artist Marina (Marianna) Basmanova (born 1938). Her father Pavel Basmanov studied under K. Petrov-Vodkin and her mother Natalia was a prominent book illustrator (worked together). Marina studied under V. Sterligov, an avant-garde painter and former student of Kazimir Malevich. She is also well known as the partner of Joseph Brodsky. They were formally never married, but had one son. It's considered that the most powerful love poetry in Russian, Brodsky dedicated to her. Very rare.First it was issued by privately-owned publishing house in 1926 by translator Lidiya Nekrasova (was arrested during Grate Purge and died in prison). Our copy is from the edition of second translation appeared in the State publishing company in 1937. The edition has no any preface or comments. The novel was translated by Vasiliy Isakov. Not so much known about his days and works. Probably, he prepared his translation occasionally.
Forster's novels were not widely known in Russia earlier and still a few people know his books. Though in 2017 the third new translation of Passage to India printed in Moscow.In June 1935 Forster participated in the International Congress for the Defense of Culture in Paris, where he talked about communism as a hope for the future. The translation of Huxley's acclaimed novel "Point Counter Point" (1928) into Russian was undertaken by the translator Maria Abkina (1892-?), who was associated with the "Soviet school" of literary translation under the guidance of Ivan Kashkin. Abkina also completed the first Russian translation of Archibald Cronin's "The Citadel," which was published in 1940.Interestingly, this Russian translation of "Point Counter Point" coincided with the novel's banning in Ireland in the same year due to its alleged "offensive public morals."The cover design for the Russian edition was created by Mark Kirnarsky (1893-1941), a graphic artist and illustrator who studied architecture in Paris before furthering his education at the Imperial Academy of Arts and the Ukrainian State Academy of Arts under Georgy Narbut. Afanasy Fet (1820-1892) a poet, memoirist and the leading representative of the 'Parnassian' movement which propagated the ideals of 'pure' art. Fet's poetry was devoted to the topics of nature and love and was far away from any political and social issues. Apart from his lyrics, he was an important translator from German French, English, Latin and Polish. He devoted much time and effort to the translation of works by Schiller, Byron, Goethe, Schopenhauer, Musset, etc. In his translations, Fet made a consistent attempt to reproduce the literal meaning and to secure the formal elements of the original for which he was often criticized by his contemporaries. The story about Sabu, a Japanese boy, was written by Japanese children's book writer Tomiko Inui (1924-2002), who winning a lot of prizes including the Mainishi Publishing Culture Award and the Akaitori Award for Children's Literature. She visited the USSR in 1963 and was runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen prize in the following year.Illustrations were created by the graphic and poster artist Mariya Uspenskaya (1925-2007). F. Scott Fitzgerald advised young women to read "Salt" (1919) by Charles Gilman Norris (1881-1945), an American novelist and playwright, so that they could gain insight into life. Furthermore, it is known that Fitzgerald sent a copy of "This Side of Paradise" to Norris with the inscription: "For Charles G. Norris, who in 'Salt,' wrote the best American novel since 'Vandover & the Brute,' with the sincere admiration of F. Scott Fitzgerald."In December 1924, in a letter to Maxwell Perkins, Fitzgerald stated that the three most remarkable characters in American fiction in the past twenty years were Tom Buchanan in "The Great Gatsby," the brother in "Salt," and Hurstwood in "Sister Carrie." First Yeats's book in Russian.
The Irish poet William Butler Yeats (1865–1939) was first mentioned in Russia in an article about William Blake in Severny Vestnik (#9, 1896). In 1915, the literary critic and translator Zinaida Vengerova translated Yeats's play Cathleen ni Houlihan, but it remained unpublished. She also reviewed his Ideas of Good and Evil in 1903, but this did not lead to any Russian translations of Yeats's works. Interestingly, the prominent Russian poet and founder of Acmeism, Nikolay Gumilyov, met Yeats during his visit to London in June 1917. In a letter to his wife and poet Anna Akhmatova, Gumilyov called Yeats 'English Vyacheslav' after Vyacheslav Ivanov, a leading Symbolist poet in Russia. Gumilyov also translated Yeats's verse drama The Countess Cathleen, but it was not published. This copy was signed by a "technical editor" (Soviet term for a proofreader) A. Tcyppo. According to proofreader's stamps, it is dated on March 23rd and the book of poems was signed for print on April 5th, 1936.
Robert Burns (1759–1796) is widely regarded as one of the most renowned foreign poets in Russia. His poems have been republished numerous times and have sold millions of copies. In addition, Russian versions of his songs can be heard in popular films, on television, and on the radio. The first Russian translations of Burns' poems were published at the beginning of the 19th century and had an influence on Alexander Pushkin, Russia's greatest poet. Pushkin even had a copy of The Poetical Works of Robert Burns (2 vol., 1829) in his personal library.
