Germantown, PA: Michael Billmeyer, 1819. Hardcover. 12mo. Original full calf with both metal clasps present and fully functional. 537pp, (3pp). Binding lightly worn; text block moderately age toned throughout, with minor sporadic foxing. A tight and attractive eighth printing of this noted "New Testament" (printed entirely in German) from the press of the well-known Philadelphia printer (1752-1837); the printing office and home in which this was printed still stands today; it was built in 1730, purchased by Billmeyer in 1789 and is supposedly the site from which George Washington directed his Continental Army forces in the Battle of Germantown. When Billmeyer and his father-in-law set up their Lutheran press in the 1780s, they acquired the surviving equipment of the renowned Philadelphia printer Christopher Saur Jr., whose press the British had destroyed in 1777. These volumes are rarely found with the original leather straps and brass clasps present and fully functional.

Stuttgart: Johann Benedict Metzler, 1753. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Full calf with spine gilt lettering and rules. xlvi, 1016pp. Frontispiece, marbled endpapers. Very good. Binding worn, especially along spine, and spine giltstamping rubbed, with a bit of chipping at spine head/tail, but nevertheless quite tight and handleable and overall attractive; inner front flyleaf bears contemporary ink notations dated Leipzig 1769. First of this edition of this important translation. Lutheran theologian Bengel was born in Germany in 1687 and died in 1752. A lovely example.

Vienna: Verlag der Osterreichischen Staatsdruckerei, 1948. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Orange cloth, pictorial dust jacket. xiii, 544pp, xxxi. Numerous illustrations (many color), patterned endpapers. Very good, good plus. Jacket a bit edgeworn, with a few minor edge chips, but still attractive. Third edition of this handsome study of Austria, its people and history, printed entirely in German.

Entzlin: Entzlin & Laiblins Verlagsbucchhandlung, n.y.. Hardcover. 12mo. Green cloth with gilt lettering and white, blue, pink, black and gilt decorative stamping. 96pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, decorative endpapers. Very good. Mild edgewear. A tight and attractive later printing of this young adult short stories, entirely in German, undated an inner flyleaf gift inscription dated 1923 places it circa 1920. "Das Pilzdorle" we are unable to translate, though the remainder translates "and Other Tales for Young and Old." Unclear why Lundehn isn't listed as "compiler" or "editor," as the volume contains nine other short stories, all by various authors.

Konstanz: Carl Hirsch, n.y.. Hardcover. 16mo. Red cloth with black spine lettering and large pictorial plate on front board. 144pp. 4 full-page color plates. Very good. A bit edgeworn. Tight, nice undated (ca. 1900) later printing, entirely in German, of this "Water Court: A Tale for the People" (first published 1860) by the German pastor and writer Rudolf Oeser (1807-59).

Aschaffenburg, Germany: Paul Pottloch Verlag, 1983. Hardcover. Small 4to. White cloth with green lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 352pp. Numerous illustrations (some color). Near fine/near fine. Tight and handsome first of this biography of the extraordinary 12th century German abbess, writer, mystic, composer, philosopher and you-name-it and her writings on medicine and herbs, entirely in German. Title Translation: "The Great Health Book of Saint Hildegard of Bingen: The Life and Work of a Notable Woman of Faith -- Advice and Recipes for a Healthy Life." Surprisingly uncommon, especially in first edition in choice condition.

Bayreuth: Lorenz Ellwanger, 1964. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff tan wrappers. 160pp. Illustrations. Very good. Mild wear to outer wrappers (only); nonauthorial gift inscription on front flyleaf. First separate printing, entirely in German, of this doctoral dissertation that first appeared in the 44th volume of the "Archiv fur Geschichte von Oberfranken" (Archive for the History of Upper Franconia). Saint-Pierre was a French architect whose work is closely associated with Bayreuth. Unusual.

A tight and nice first edition of this thick inspirational tome, entirely in German.Title translation: "The Golden Signpost: A Guide to Luck and Prosperity.

Attractive later printing of this broad and popular anthology of well-illustrated sentimental verse, fiction and nonfiction, undated but likely circa 1890s. Entirely in German, this 32nd volume is a spinoff on the work of the German children's writer Ottilie Wildermuth (1817-77) as continued by her daughters Agnes Willms and Adelheid Wildermuth. Title translation: "The Youth's Garden: A Present for Young Girls.

A tight, attractive later printing, entirely in German, of this second volume of (rough translation) "The Children's Friend: New Tales for Youth." Charming front board depicts a seated mother reading a book to a young girl standing in front of her, a young boy standing to the side and a toddler playing with toys at her feet. A superb copy, undated but circa 1900.

Tausend") printing of "The Last Man: Amusing Verse," entirely in German, by this German poet and lyricist (1895-1976).

Other than light age toning to endpapers, the book itself is in exceptionally tight and pristine condition; jacket shows mild edgewear and age toning. Astonishingly fresh, bright turn-of-the-century copy of this fiction (whose title translates "The Ship's Carpenter: The Wreck") by the prolific and popular German novelist and travel writer (1816-72). Color front board image of seaman fleeing a blazing ship onto a lifeboat is outstanding and the plentiful illustrations by famed German artist and illustrator Planck (1870-1956), probably the best known German book artist of the early 20th century, are delightful. A superb, tight, handsome first German edition of this short and squat 2-volumes-in-1, entirely in German, translated by the noted German author/translator/reformer Hirsch (1829-1902). Henrik von Trolle (1730-84) was a distinguished Swedish naval officer. Title translation: "The Sea Officer. Historical Narratives from the Time of Gustav III.

A tight, nice later (22nd) printing of this 1940 novella by the prolific German writer (1892-1964), entirely in German (title translation: "The Spanish Rose Tree").

Tight, clean and handsome undated fifth printing (ca. 1900) of this gathering of sentimental artwork accompanied by "old, beloved rhymes" ("Mit alten, lieben Reimen von Julius Lohmeyer und Fr. Oldenberg"), entirely in German. German painter Pletsch (1830-88) was one of the most popular and influential children's book illustrators of the 19th century, a master of sentimental scenes of everyday small town life. Title translation: "The Old Acquaintances: Original Sketches." A lovely copy with bold and bright color plates, identified as No. 439 of this F. Loewes Verlag publication. A pencilled ownership signature on front flyleaf is dated 1908, confirming a turn-of-the-century publication date.

Milwaukee: Verlag von Georg Brumder, n.y.. Hardcover. 12mo. Brown blind-embossed pebble-grain cloth with ornate gilt lettering. 329pp. Near fine. Very faintest of edgewear; text block moderately and evenly age toned as usual; ownership signature on front flyleaf. A wonderfully tight and marvelously handsome reprint edition of this historical fiction -- entirely in German -- set in the time of Martin Luther. Undated, but circa 1890. Albert Emil Brachvogel (1824-78) was a popular German author of historical fiction. The binding is spectacularly fresh, with gilt bright.

Tissue-guarded chromolithograph frontispiece, numerous illustrations and figures, plans, large (17" X 14¼") chromolithograph laid in loose. Very good overall. Tight and nice, only flaw a homely 3½" water line at upper right of front board; nonauthorial Christmas 1912 gift inscription auf Deutsch on half-title page. A tight and nice first edition of this collection of children's craft projects, entirely in German. Title translation: "The Little Paper Worker. Instructions for Making All Kinds of Paper Work, Mounting Maps and Plans, Making Boxes, Cases, and so on." The rarely-present accompanying color print noted on title page is present and lovely, a bright chromolithograph which when cut out, folded and assembled creates a "Modellir-Carton, Puppen-Stube, (Theater.)" -- basically a paper mock-up of a small puppet theater. Tight and nice copy of the 6th volume of Potzl's "Gesammelte Skizzen" (Collected Sketches), entirely in German. Undated but certainly early 20th century. Potzl (1851-1914) was an Austrian journalist and newspaper columnist who authored many books about life in Vienna -- this title (The Lord of Nigerl) was first published in 1892. A lovely little copy.

Cloth (mainly rear cover) mottled and rather discolored, though strong and odorless; single leaf (pp. 143-44) bears old scotch tape tear repair; text block lightly age toned as usual. "Library of The Upjohn Company" (Michigan pharmaceutical giant) on front pastedown and their blind-embossed circular ownership imprint on title page. First "Halbjahr" (half year) bound issue of the famed "German Medical Weekly," January through June. Founded in 1875, this journal (printed entirely in German, of course) was for many decades one of the most influential medical publications in the world. Despite binding issue, a wealth of dense state-of-the-art medical knowledge a la 1940.
