Buffalo, NY: US Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, 1969. Pamphlet. Four-panel brochure, 5.5x8 inches, some foxing at upper left on front panel. Explanation of the diversion of water from the American Falls portion of Niagara Falls, due to the accumulation of broken rock at the bottom of the falls. The cover image shows the rock bed of the falls after the water was diverted.

Detroit: the Guild, 1937. Paperback. Enormous oblong pamphlet-style paperback, 12x19 inches, stapled at left and folded vertically in half, as issued, ergo item in hand measures 12x9.5 inches. Opens out to 24p (so numbered) of the giant leaves displaying "plans and instructions" in profusion, plus a full-size full-color side/front/rear view of the ideally-realized vehicle. Scoring of the competition (win an education, win money and travel) involves separate scores for metalwork, woodwork, trimcraft, paintcraft, castings, and (most importantly) fidelity to scale. A bit worn with toning around the margins, but certainly a good copy.

Albany: C. Van Benthuysen, 1857. Hardcover. NB, this is the "Drawings" part of the commission report, not the report itself. Hardbound in 9.5x5.5 diced brown cloth boards, lettered gilt and panelled in blind, this casing very worn with the cloth lifting away in small areas. Front hinge is still sound but the cover feels at risk with a half-inch chip at the head; rear hinge is strong and clean with two clean blanks. Text consists of numerous line-engraved plates, all of them folding out laterally except for a couple of singleton leaves with presswork on tawny tint-blocks, and the further exception of two folded maps, only one of which is truly large, i.e. the "State of New York"; this latter map is onlaid with three colors that show rail lines that are completed, ones under construction, and those proposed. Several locomotive-types are shown. The "drawings" appear very good, with only a few tiny marginal tears and faint general toning. The casing could probably be restored. Hill, 1991. xiv, 391p., frontis portrait of Isaac Newton and other period images, hardbound, one of one thousand handsome clothbound specimens in a run of eleven hundred with leather additional; text records an immense number of personal holdings in the field of mechanics, its development in Europe, with professionally researched annotations, item gotten-up in fine-press mode by Austin TX bookmen: figured paper over 11.5x8.5 inch clothbacked boards, as-new shape in a worn, slightly soiled & toned shipping jacket (blank white). Very strong in English-language treatments.

London: Department of the Environment, 1973. iv, 75p., illustrated with tables and a variety of line maps, softbound first issue in 9.5x6 inch plain printed royal-blue wraps. Mildest edgewear, slight marginal toning, a very good clean unmarked copy. Cmnd 5430. Supports the construction of a tunnel under the English Channel to link England with France and the mainland, as a way of promoting trade and peace.

Chicago: Curt Teich & Co, 1920. Eighteen photographic views, capably tinted in colors, each measuring 3x5.5 inches on slightly larger panels, accordioned on a single long light-cardstock leaf and tipped into a 4x6 inch postcard pocket. Item bears stamps legibly cancelled, a pencilled Oakland address and a brief pencilled message inside ("How is Betty Lou.. going to Long Beach soon"); pocket supplies an additional two views though these abraded with faint dustsoil and a touch of silverfishing. Prints enclosed are unmarked quite nice. One of the two one-cent stamps is largely torn away, else a good set; even the die-cut slit that accommodates the flap of the pocket remains untorn and useful.

Moscow: Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1953. 38p. + numerous unpaginated photogravure illustrations (half- & full-page) throughout the text, and a folded diagrammatic map; 8.25 x 5.75 inch staplebound textblock with pasted-on pictorial wraps. Spine chipped at tail, wraps lightly worn, faint dampstain along spine else good condition. Construction pix, completed work, shipping, dams, nearby agricultural scenes (including classic Soviet tractor), housing tracts developed for the construction workers,

Paris: the manufacturer, 1932. Pamphlet. Large singleton leaf of coated alkaline paperstock, 17x21 inches, printed in green and black on gloss white and folded four times to make a 10.5x5.5 inch advertising brochure. A nice copy with mild marginal wear, mild crimpings, and a top-border bend due to careless storage. Has a couple of minute partings at several intersecting foldlines. Bright color, handleable, a pleasant item that shows different models, interiors, mechanism close-ups, mono-structure of basic body the "carcasse"). FYI, the sort of humans shown as driving and riding are all respectable women about, we guess, thirty years of age.

Milano: Auto Moto Avio, 1937. Pamphlet. Offprint on glazed alkaline paperstock, [12]p., folio sheets printed and folded to make an 11.5x9 inch staple-fastened self-wraps pamphlet; in pretty good shape for a big lightweight item of great interest without covers. Starts on p.3 with a half-page "tabella dei partecipanti" followed by profuse b&w exhibit & site photographs, 27 numbered vignette-sized views, most measure 2.5x4 inches. Mild external and internal signs of age and handling (crimping, with a little faint foxing), a very good copy. Shown are gliders (gliders exclusively) from Polonia, Svizzera, Cecoslovacchia, Inghilterra, Germania, Austria, on grassy fields and in the air, exterior shots with some cockpit and structural close-ups. They look like real planes!

Milano: the salon, 1937. Respectively 27, 8, 16p., stapled offprints on high-gloss alkaline leaves, each 11.5x9 inches, featuring diagrammatic views (and artists' renderings, or retouched photographs) of various suspension systems - diesels - industrial vehicles with "X-ray" renderings of body-shells and undercarriages. These disbound fascicles are in pretty good shape, just some handling crimps and rusted staples (without migration). The three offprints as a small lot, for $35. Find a wide variety of makes. First and longest item shows Ford, Studebaker, Packard, Chrysler, Hudson-Terraplane, Opel, Chev, Pontiac, Adler, DKW, Wanderer, BMW, Hansa, Maybach, Mercedes-Benz, Wolseley, Autocar, MG, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Alfa-Romeo, Skoda, Tatra, and.. a lot of statistics. For diesel, find Hanomag, Mercedes, Saurer, engines only except for a Hanomag undercarriage. The Industrials are great, and wierd.

Milano: Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, 1988. Hardcover. Respectively 136, 186p., profuse b&w site photos and diagrams of several sorts, a few plates in color photography, texts in Italian. Matching bindings: each measures 12x8 inches in white boards gilt with dust jacket. Jacket spine panels are sunned from gloss white to cream, titling unaffected, while books themselves are clean except for a couple of lightly-pencilled dealer's codes. Very good copies, entirely sound and unmarked except as just noted.

London: The Communist Party, 1945. 32p., stapled wraps, 4.75x7.25 inches, lightly worn, staple rusted else very good condition.

Paris, 1930. Paperback. A large folder, 12x9.5 inch plain printed wraps, containing variously paginated fascicles that are staplebound and are themselves fastened into the wraps with a decorative cord. Presswork on thick matte leaves (quite alkaline) features sepia gravure site photography of (mostly) modernist industrial buildings, plus bridges & roads & houses, all constructed with the company's product (tarpaper, poured layerings, road surfacing). Many diagrams also; these detail construction minutia. Captions and the brief running text entirely in French. Wraps somewhat edgeworn, a little toned and spotted, staples badly rusted while the cord remains sound and decorative. The photos are excellent, clearly reproduced and in clean condition. Laid in find loose leaves that further clarify builders' concerns. All in all, a very good exemplar.

[occupied France]: no publisher, 1940. Pamphlet. 32p., softbound, a stapled pamphlet in 7.5x5.5 inch decorated wraps. Quite sound, clean and unmarked, you wretched little piece of Vichy propaganda, as if no reader had searched thee out. North German land-reclamation employing dykes; dated from two clues, the year 1938 cited as recent past, and a site-name, "Adolf-Hitler-Koog" recorded without qualm. Koog is a stretch of land reclaimed from the sea, using dikes (or dykes).
