Hardcover. xii, 126p., plus appended b&w photographs (small but clear) and two splendid folded maps in colors, these in fine shape. Hardbound in 10x6 inch dark blue cloth boards spine-titled gilt. The gilt titling is legible though dim, item is entirely sound, clean and unmarked. No. 1 in a series prepared for the supply centre.

Baltimore: Journal of the American Oriental Society, 1948. Pamphlet. 42p., softbound, a 9x6 inch stapled pamphlet, has a bump to top of spinefold that affects adjacent leaves, expect a touch of rust to staples, an otherwise very good copy, clean and unmarked. New York: Columbia University Press, 1969. Hardcover. 245p., cloth-covered boards, 11.25x8.75 inches landscape format, profusely illus., very good condition in a price-clipped and lightly edgeworn dust jacket.

Baltimore: the journal, 1948. Paperback. 49p., plus VII plates on glazed inserted stock, softbound in 9x6 inch plain printed buff wraps. In-text copy is shown in "square Hebrew" rather than the cuneiform, the cuneiform photocopied and diagrammed in the terminal plates section. A fine copy, pace a faint misfolding to the back cover. "This Supplement Issued with Volume 68, number 3 of the Journal

Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1953. Hardcover. First American edition: xix, 114p., illustrated with a number of b&w interiors of caves and other sites, one colorphoto as frontispiece and a line map bound in at back. Hardbound in openweave 9.5x6 inch black cloth boards gilt and enclosed in the dust jacket. Book itself is touched with sun-faded spots where dust jacket wasn't, and said dust jacket is severely edgeworn and dirty. All in all, a good (good-only) copy.

Tashkent: Chief Editorial Office of Publishing and Printing Concern "Sharq, 1996. Hardcover. Not fully paginated: a substantial coffeetable book page-numbered through p.117 followed by nearly as many appended captioned color photos, ergo about 200p. total. The first eighty pages are entirely in Cyrillic and largely textual only, with floorplans and diagrams and scattered vignettes captioned in three languages; then English translation with a different set of vignette illustrations. Somewhat confusing, but excellent photography, all in focus and in color. Item is hardbound in 11.5x8.5 inch glossy white boards and enclosed in the dust jacket. Boards mildly spotted, dj edgeworn with a verso reinforcement to the head; a very good copy. Terminal leaf issues a realpolitik boast: "If you are still dubious about our powers, look at our constructions" - assumed to mean draw a lesson from "third world" Muslim tenacity.

Hawthorne NY: Ray Leonardo and Sons, Inc, 1987. Pamphlet. ii, 54p., illustrated with diagrams and tables that demonstrate conformities in the historical trajectory of (all?) recorded civilizations. Softbound in dark blue 9x6 inch stapled wraps, a near-fine copy with a tiny bump to tail corner and a "Review Copy" stamp impression inside. FYI, author's consideration of "turbulence" is more persuasive than the "transcendence" element.

Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2010. Hardcover. xiv, 262p., numerous b&w plates and vignettes, and a few images in colorphoto; hardbound in 11.5x8.5 inch black cloth boards lettered in silverfoil and enclosed in the dust jacket. An as-new copy, entirely sound, square, clean and unmarked.

New York / New Haven: The Metropolitan Museum of Art / Yale University Press, 2008. Hardcover. xxiii, 524p., a splendid large book hardbound in 12.5x9.5 inch blood-orange openweave cloth boards lettered gilt and enclosed in the strong dust jacket. Faintest signs of any handling or age, entirely sound, clean and unmarked. Some images are of objets d'art retrieved from ancient shipwrecks.

Strangnas, Sweden: Dast Forlag AB, 1973. Paperback. 192/3, texts divided between Swedish and English (not necessarily translated one to the other), numerous b&w period images, stills, ads scattered through, softbound in 8.5x6 inch decorated black wraps. Externally somewhat abraded along extremities but quite sound. internally clean and sound, and Inscribed and signed, a good to very good copy. Inscribed and signed on the copyright page in ink, "To John .. from one author to another .. [&c] "Iwan, 1980". This "third edition" followed the first, printed individually in a run of four copies, and the second, allowed a run of 100 copies, here the third is limited to 1,500 copies.

Paris: Payot, 1930. Hardcover. 426p., maps as called for, all fold out, all presswork clear, none damaged save for a half-inch tear at the stub of the color item stubbed-in at rear, this a really superb map with several onlay colors. Book, or this exemplar anyway, originated as a paperback and was hardbound (expertly) in Hong Kong by one Sam Ying, his odd seller's fiche on the pastedown. Unfortunately, Sam left out the printed wraps, otherwise we have no objections. Sound copy, with a little abrasion along the joint-lines, reasonably good spine-titlings and -rulings, clean and unmarked within with a touch of foxing, a very good copy. Bibliotheque Geographique.

Chur, Switzerland / London: Printed for the Hakluyt Society, 1872. Paperback. xxii, 143p., softbound in 8x5 inch decorated wraps; texts photocopied from the Hakluyt original. Quite sound, clean and unmarked, a very good copy.

Culver City CA: Labyrinthos, 1984. Pamphlet. vi, 26p., illustrated with three facsimiles, two of which maps including a central double-spread , an aerial view dated to 1735. Softbound, a large pamphlet stapled into 11x8.5 inch yellow wraps, an entirely sound, clean and unmarked copy.

London: Sotheby's, 1988. Paperback. 193P., plus how-to order information, plus printed price list (folded for mailing), plus stapled xerox leaves reproducing Philip Robinson's printed article on certain Chinese/Jesuit maps. The usual Big Auction Cat with a great number of color plates and b&w facsimiles (two are folded, global views that open up beautifully). Catalog is paperbound, 10.7x8.2 inches, cover laminate is peeling, half-inch cut to head near the spine (affects cover and first leaf), find a stroke of ballpoint pen ink to half-title (underlines Robinson's name), the doublespreads are very slightly crimped. Good (good-only) copy of a useful item. Collector Robinson's article appeared in The Book Collector for Summer 1976, it runs forty pages or so (two per xerox leaf); it entirely concerns the aforementioned maps.

Sofia: Casa Editrice Nauka I Izkustvo, 1979. Hardcover. A book, entirely in color, of well-reproduced cartographics ingeniously presented, with one enormous map done as a folded-in-half dust jacket over raw linen boards, and others carefully folded (individual treatment). A real labor of love! --crafted by real Bulgarians. What editorial text is here is in Italian, after all they own the maps. Pagination runs to 149p., a densely-composed text in fine shape as is the cloth casing and the folded map/dj : entirely sound, clean and unmarked.

Pacifica, CA: Old Tree Books, 2013. Paperback. 397p., pictorial wrappers, small damp stain on bottom fore-edge corner. Signed and inscribed by the author.

London: SAQI, 2006. Paperback. 503p., illustrated with numerous period views in vivid color and otherwise, site and exhibit photography, a couple line maps, a handsome big softbound that one reviewer calls "a triumph of book production". Wraps are 9.5x6.5 inch glossy color, an inch & one quarter thick, condition is as-new: entirely sound, clean and unmarked.

Bloomington: Lilly Library, 1997. 90p., many maps in facsimile, additional modern line maps, plus numerous b&w details in vignette reproduction, and four exhibit photos in color. Softbound in 10.7x8.3 inch glossy monochrome wraps. A fine copy, perfectly sound, clean and unmarked. These maps instructed the internal traveler in the multiple empires that met in Central America. Laid in find a large six-panel brochure on the Library's projected next exhibition, "Women Seeking Expression 1789-1914." Lilly has comprehensive George Sand holdings.

Paris: Societe d'Edition - Les Belles Lettres, 1960. Paperback. l [i.e., Roman numeral fifty], 59p., the French-language critical apparatus in a font differing from Sallust's Hellenic Greek, softbound in 8x5 marigold wraps which are slightly dust-soiled, leaves mostly unopened (ones opened are neatly done), internal crimpings where the unopened do not lie quite right), nicely executed ownership name to front free endsheet, a very good copy: otherwise cleanly and unmarked and perfectly sound. Collection des universites de France publiee sous le patronage de l'Association Guillaume Bude.

Dusseldorf-Koln: Eugen Diederichs Verlag, 1963. Hardcover. Later printing, black letter, complete set, unobtrusively ex-library. Hardbound, white cloth spines titled black over matched 8x5.5 inch textured apricot boards, decorated with period vignettes. Slightest shelfwear, a clean sound set which was once rubber-stamped "English Dept. Library" in the upper corner of each pastedown, then deaccessioned with the wavy line of an inkstick. Not perhaps as crude as this may sound, no designated institution, no other marks anywhere. Condition is likewise blandly good: a minutely turned corner-tip, a mild wrinkle to a top rim, are the only touches of wear we see. Conclusion: the saga literature gotten up very nicely and Germanically.
