Two volumes finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London in forest green polished calf, gilt backs with Cruikshanks signature in gilt along with four of his comic figures in gilt, patterned end papers with wide floral gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. Very Good, light rubbing at edges and joints, a bit of toning at end papers only, hinge starting to separate at title page 2nd volume. A quite pleasing set in handsome fine binding. . Later Edition. London: Richard Bentley, 1844. Presentation Inscription front end page -"Sally Reahard from Ruth Lilly - 1938". A wonderful book collecting Association Copy. "An elderly Indianapolis recluse, a fortune in Eli Lilly & Co. stock and a penchant for phenomenal donations to non-profits -- it could describe Ruth Lilly, the $100 million benefactor of the Chicago-based Poetry Foundation. Or perhaps a kindred spirit named Sally Reahard." (Chicago Tribune, Feb. 16, 2004). Sally Reahard bequeathed $70 million to the Nature Conservancy in 2003, the largest gift the Conservancy had ever received. Sally was a noted book collector as well, and Ruth was the daughter of J.K. Lilly, Jr. whose fabulous book collection was the foundational collection for Lilly Library at Indiana University. The Tribune article continues -" Both were longtime investors in Eli Lilly who just saw their holdings go up and up." London: Edward Moxon & Co., 1865. Decorated with hidden double fore-edge paintings displaying the harbors of Boston and Philadelphia, the paintings are unsigned but are the work of S.E. Stevens, a prolific painter after WWII, circa 1945-1960, whose work was often posed as having been painted much earlier. Still, rather attractive paintings. Finely bound in red straight-grain morocco with green morocco inlays, with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine and panels, all edges gilt, gilt dentelles, the stamp of S. He served as ambassador first in Lisbon, then in Copenhagen, before being named Governor-General of the French colonial possessions in India, based in Pondichéry, in 1834.
