Six single issue magazines in original woodcut pictorial wraps. Each is bound with 3 hole string tie with pictorial covers laid over. Several issues with rear cover detached. Prior ownership of a liberal arts university philosophical scoiety with bookplates to front pastedowns and period small paper labels to spines. Ownership notes in pen and pencil to bookplates and front endpages. Bindings sound but tender. Rear endpages missing from Vol I. Small chip missing from leather base of spine vol II/ Boards rubbed with flaking and loss of paper on edges. Illustrated with some woodcuts. Good only .

New York: R. Martin & Co. Good. 1843. First Edition. 1/4 leather. Steel plate engravings; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 340 pages; 1843 R. Martin & Co. Stout smaller format HC in 1/4 leather backed spine and cloth covered sides. Profusely illustrated with over 80 tissue guarded, steel plate engravings, most with 4 lines of verse from the poem which they illustrated. This copy falwed by some damp staining somewhat heavy to front and rear endpages but with the text block and plates generally bright and nearly free from any damp evidence. Cloth sides mottled; leather spine rubbed with portions of the leather title labels lost. Prior owner has placed wide transparent tape over the joints and inside the hinges. The binding is sound and the engravings quite pleasant and well preserved. Uncommon, but Good only at best .

Light rubbing and stress to leather over joints and at ends but sound. Short closed tears in the gutter of the front flyleaf. Endpages toned and lightly soiled; cloth covered boards a little surface rubbed with a small damp splotch outline to cover. Illustrated with in text woodcuts and maps throughout. Expected but mild toning to page stock. VG- .

Leather. 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 312 pages; "New Edition" on the title page; believed the 1st American edition of this pedagogical anthology which went through several editions in England. "Thoughts on education, by way of introduction." at front signed A. Fisher (Ann Fisher Slack). Period calf with partial leather title lable to spine. Front flyleaf has the top 1/3 clipped away presumably to remove ownership; a chip and closed tear to the bottom edge of the same leaf. Contents complete and decent with usual and expected general toning and occasional spotting. Leather crazed somewhat over the spine; some shallow gnawing to the front edge of the lower board. [Evans 29518; Sabin 63412] Uncommon early American imprint of this British pedagogical collection. Good thus .

HC in cloth backed, paper covered boards with titles and woodcut to front board. Features a pair of woodcuts of an early pictorial depiction of baseball being played by youths. The woodcut appears on the pictorial title page and again on page 23 with an accompanying set of verses. Soundly bound, this English and German language edition features identical content in facing page languages. Such that the book presents two pages each numbered 1 through 48, the first in English and the other in German. Woodcut engravings throughout. Light to moderate shelf rub to board edges and surfaces and light shelf soiling to surfaces. Prior owner name penned to front endpage; evidence of a an ownership plate removed to rear pastedown. Notable for the early representation of a baseball type game. VG- .
