London: Ward, Lock & Bowden, Ltd., 1893. Third Edition/5th Printing. Hardcover. Poor/N/A. The first printing to include the note on Sherlock Holmes by Dr. Joseph Bell who inspired the character. In one quarter cloth binding with scarlet cloth to spine and overlap with gilt to titling and beige cloth covered boards with red type. Corners are bumped and rubbed through exposing boards at same. Gilt to top page ends. Soiling to boards with spots and rings. Front spine crease has a 1 1/4 inch split at top that has possibly been reglued and a 1 inch split towards bottom. The rear spine crease has a 4 inch split from bottom up. Fraying/cloth loss to spine ends with tanning to spine and some spotting and stains, especially at bottom of spine onto front board. Illustrated endpapers which are split at front with ffep separated two-thirds up from bottom. Some flaking with mull exposed, but some likely adhesive reinforcement as holding strong. Discard stamps to same and top page ends. Jacket is unclipped and in jacket protector which is glued to pastedowns.

Edgewear and rubbing through cloth at bumped corners and spine ends. Some soiling/spots to cloth. Rough early repairs to front and rear hinges with cuts through pastedowns and hinge tape. Very small embossed bookstorre stamp to ffep. Initials in pencil to rear pastedown. A little foxing to first few pages. Illustrations by Sidney Paget. Twenty Third Thousand.

Binding tight and interior clean. Later Printing.

Front pastedown and ffep have some light paper scarring adjacent hinge as if stuck together at one point, perhaps due to printer. Previous owner's clear plastic book protector is attached to pastedowns with adhesive strips, otherwise Very Good +. No jacket.

Bump to top front corner. 1/4 inch tear and some creasing to fore edge of first three leaves. Jacket unclipped and in beautiful shape with the exception of a couple small scars to center of front panel.

A Virgin on the Rocks(1985) is VG+/VG with remainder spray to bottom edge. The Man in the Sopwith Camel (1975) has dents to top boards and bump to bottom of spine - Fair/VG. Edgwear/nicks and a few short tears to volumes.

Unfortunate adhesive stains to front and rear pastedowns with a spot of faint discoloration to rfep. Very faint spotting to top page ends as well. Dust jacket is unclipped ($8.95) with diagonal creasing to top inch or so of front panel, mild edgewear and corresponding adhesive stains to inside of flaps with a few spots visible through flaps. If not for stains, would be Near Fine/Very Good.

Signed by author alongside name on first page of story. In surprisingly good shape given the printing quality of early pulps. Cover show nicks and edgewear and a few small chips. A few creases at corners and along bottom of front spine crease. Small splits to top and bottom of same crease and small tape repair to inside cover adjacent bottom of spine. Small letter to front cover erased and a few marks/spots. Unfortunately, previous owner' taped clear plastic book protector to inside of covers and small adhesive strip is attached to bottom of spine as well - otherwise would grade Very Good. Extremely scarce.

Middlesex: Penguin Books, 1970. N/A. Paperback. Good/N/A. All are dated 1970-1971. Two appear to be First Editions thus, the other a reprint. All show wear: Creasing to spines and covers, edgewear, scars, etc. Two have large bookplates to inside front covers and one of these has some moisture staining to top page ends going a little into text block.
