Descripción:
A science textbook for upper level students. This is legit science but dodgy publishing. Condition is Good. Black leather spine with cloth boards. Ex-library Conn. Public Library but quite nice considering. Library markings are on the spine, front end paper, copyright page and last page. 473 pages packed with interesting engravings. Foxing throughout. Binding is sound. Volume covers fluid dynamics, electricity, steam power and, of course, pyronomics. Feel free to inquire. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: The so called 'Eighth Edition' is actually a later printing of the first edition (read on). I did a little research. Professor Moffat published a similar text in London in 1835 aimed at younger students (The Boy's Book of Science). Johnson published "The Scientific Class-Book" in 1835 (Philadelphia) aimed at older students using Moffat's work as the outline. That work seems to be the same as this one. In 1847 the publisher changed the title to what you see here although contents… Leer más

Descripción:
1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will receive.

Descripción:
Hardcover, 1885, Philadelphia. Condition is very good: decorative blindstamped and gilt boards. Front hinge is open at gutter but binding is not affected, just a crack in the paper. Interior is excellent: a few smudges are seen but no writing, tears or folds. Paginates complete with 300 pages plus all blanks. Includes 73 full page plates and many more images embedded in text. This is a collection of almost every nautical disaster of the period notable for the extensive illustrations and decorative flourishes on almost every page. Check out the "Triodon" image. All that and shelf presence too. A rare but not particularly valuable item. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Copyright on this is 1854. You would think then that a copy earlier than 1885 could be found but you would be wrong. There are undated copies that may or may not be earlier. WorldCat locates a single copy of this 1885 issue. See OCLC 81608148. For collectors, dealers and terminally curious I have prepared a short… Leer más

Descripción:
Four volume hardcover set of Verne titles. The standout feature of this set is the condition which is Near Fine. Decorative blind stamped boards of blue cloth. Minor abrasions can be seen on the front and rear boards. The interiors have no writing, folds or other evidence of use. The paper is moderately toned and somewhat fragile. The only defect I can find is the ffep of Michael Strogoff which partially cracked when I was trying to image the title page. So handle with care, these are not reading copies. A curious feature seen in three volumes is the font size drops in the final few pages. Volumes are 7.25 x 5 inches. A very cool set with nice shelf presence. This is an uncommon edition. I assume there are other Verne titles with this binding but I could not find them. Please see images of the books you will receive. Feel free to inquire. Notes: I did some research to determine date of publication. I am assuming that Hurst published these more or less at the same time. Claudius Bombarnac was first… Leer más

Descripción:
1851 hardcover from Silas Andrus. Condition is Very Good. Black blindstamped cloth shows minimal wear but some small splits at base of spine starting. This does not compromise integrity of binding which remains sound. Endpapers have pencil note of prior bookseller, pencil note on last page, occasional foxing and stains throughout, and bookseller stamp of "Perry & Erety, Philadelphia." Paginates: blank, (1)-104, blank. Many engravings in text. Complete as issued. Small format. Overall better condition than usually seen. This edition: OCLC: 2665946. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Bibliographically this book is difficult so bear with me. James Fenimore Cooper wrote "The Spy, A Tale of the Neutral Ground" in 1821; in 1828 H. L. Barnum wrote a biography of Enoch Crosby titled "The Spy Unmasked; Or, Memoirs of Enoch Crosby, Alias Harvey Birch, The Hero of Mr. Cooper's Tale of the Neutral Ground." In 1831 a juvenile version of this story was published anonymously with most likely… Leer más
