"A few left town, but most survivors were determined to remain and remember...Newcomers brought industry and innovation. The University of Kansas, 1866, and Haskell Institute, 1884 (now Haskell Indian Nations University), grew into major institutions."

From back cover: "Well over two thousand people were left homeless and perhaps the fairest city in Missouri had been utterly wiped from the face of the earth. Union General Jim Lane left Osceola with all of their plunder and headed for Kansas, leaving old age, and helpless innocents to keep vigil over the dead and wounded, and life blood and tears marked the spot which only a few short hours before had been peaceful, contented, happy homes."New book, no defects. Descripción:
From the front dust jacket flap: "The Santa Fe trail was a highway for commerce. A link to markets. A pipeline for international trading contracts and highly capitalized investments. Commerce is cooperative work, and when it succeeds - that is, when it makes an honest profit - commerce can also leave a powerful legacy. That legacy is the story of the Santa Fe Trail.""Path to Glory tells with pictures and prose the story of the Santa Fe Trail - its beginning, its role in commerce and military history, the journey along its scenic route, its final days and its continuing fascination for Americans."Book - Good condition. Light brown leatherette over boards with gold gilt on front and spine. First edition. Signed by author on title page. It appears that water was spilled on the leading couple inches of the pages which caused a "wrinkle" on most of the pages and a light water stain on some of the pages in the back. The water did not appear to affect the end papers or covers.Dust Jacket - Very Good-… Leer más

Descripción:
An outstanding study of William Clarke Quantrill and the famous "Border Wars" in Kansas and Missouri in the 1860's. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Quantrill joined the Confederacy. Preferring guerilla tactics, he organized his own gang of southern sympathizers.Very Good condition. 1st Edition. Red cloth binding, text and image in gilt on the cover. Title, author, and publisher in worn gilt on the spine. Cover has a spot on the front and light rubbing on the back. Light edge and corner wear. Pages are lightly tanned and edges are untrimmed. I think there were 2-4 pages that had a stain, but I couldn't find them again, there may be more - but the book is mostly clean and tight. Binding is good. A really nice book for its age. Please see photosNo dust jacket. Includes maps and illustrations. 542 pages including Index and Errata. This is a heavy book and may require a small amount of additional postage.

From the Dust Jacket Flaps: This is the last of three volumes. The first two were: "This Was Railroading" and "Pacific Slope Railroads".
"Now author Abdill climaxes his work with "Rails West" which follows the same pattern of quaint and wondrous photographs with revealing incidents and biographies, many in light of the Civil War and other historical guide posts."

Book - Good condition. It would have gotten a "Very Good" except for tanning, tape stains and residue, plus pencil inscription and writing and ink stamps on the end papers. Very minimal edge wear, some corner and spine wear. Pages are clean and binding is tight.
Dust Jacket - Poor condition. Some rubbing/bumping, chips and tears, large tape residue on front and tape and stains on flaps.

Descripción:
From back cover: "This famous memoir by John McCorkle is the best published account by a scout who rode with Quantrill. McCorkle was a young Missouri farmer of Southern sympathies who became a prominent member of William Clarke Quantrill's infamous guerrillas. The took advantage of the turmoil in the Missouri-Kansas borderland to prey upon pro-Union people." He participated in raids including the massacres at Lawrence and Baxter Springs, Kansas, and Centralia, Missouri.Book Condiiton: Very Good-. This got the "minus" because there are a few light stains on the inside front cover, a slight bit of "wrinkling" of the first 40 or so pages (barely there and does not affect the text at all), and tiny soft top corner creases on the first 8 pages - otherwise pages are clean and binding is tight. Outside covers in excellent condition and no spine crease.232 pages including Index.

Per the dust covers: This is a full-scale biography of John Brown. "John Brown was a profoundly religious man dedicated to emancipation and Negro rights..." He "tried to overthrow slavery in the South itself by attacking Harpers Ferry and inciting a slave insurrection."
"Was Brown a vicious fanatic, or the greatest abolitionist hero in history?" This history is based on "contemporary letters, diaries, journals, newspapers, published reports, and recollections of eyewitnesses, this book is especially notable for providing the first really full account ever written of Brown's career before he went to Kansas..."
Book - Very Good condition. Light blue cloth over boards with black and white text on spine. There is a little wear at spine and corners and the corners are bent. Dark blue end papers. Clean and tight.
Dust Jacket - Poor condition. Color is good, but there is some rubbing/bumping and much edge/corner wear with tears, creases, and chips.

Front and back have a couple lightly soiled spots, but overall look nice. End papers are a green floral & check design. From back cover: "The Walnut Valley Festival was launched in 1972 when a guitar maker, a farmer and a businessman built their own music festival from the ground up. It has made the small town of Winfield into an annual destination for acoustic musicians and music lovers from around the world, and it has always been participatory, with the informal campsite pickin' as much a part of the event as the state shows and instrumental contests."

Personal note: This is a wonderful festival to attend if you like folk, Irish, and bluegrass music. It draws amazing talent!

From back cover: "Seeking his fortune, R. H. Williams left the English navy in 1852 to farm in southwest Virginai. When that lost luster he went west and joined the 'Border Ruffians' who were fighting to make Kansas a slave state. By 1860 he was in Texas, and within another year he was riging with an irregular Confederate cavalry, battling Yankees, large bands of thieves, and Comanches. Returning to England in 1868, he fashioned his American adventures into this extraordinary memoir, first published in 1907."
