Descripción:
This is a first edition of The Guns of Normandy, A Soldier's Eye View, France 1944, by the Canadian writer George Blackburn (1917-2006). Blackburn was also a WWII veteran, awarded both the Military Cross and the French Legion of Honour. He wrote about his experiences and his books were best-sellers. (I have the companion book, the Guns of Victory, also listed here on Biblio.)
This book is in near-mint condition. 536 pages, including maps and photos.
This is part of one review:
In the weeks after D-Day, the level of artillery action in Normandy was unprecedented. In what was a relatively small area, both sides bombarded each other relentlessly for three months, each trying to overwhelm the other by sheer fire power. The Guns of Normandy puts the reader in the front lines of this horrific battle. In the most graphic and authentic detail, it brings to life every aspect of a soldier's existence, from the mortal terror of impending destruction, to the unending fatigue, to the giddy exhilaration at finding… Leer más

This book is in near-mint condition. The original owner leafed through it, dog-eared it once, then apparently didn't pick it up again. 506 pages, including maps and photos.
This is one review:
For the Canadian Soldiers who lived through the momentous battle for Normandy in the summer of 1944, it was inconceivable that the conflict in Europe could continue for another eight long months. The war was won, they thought, and to win it they had been pushed to what seemed like the limits of endurance. But ahead lay not only an enemy with no thoughts of… Leer más

Descripción:
This is a rare first edition, and first/only printing, of History and Services of the 78th Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs) 1793-1881, compiled from the manuscripts of the late Major Colin MacKenzie and other official sources. It was published in Edinburgh in 1901.
I have found two other copies online, plus one copy in the Royal Collection, housed at Windsor Castle. It was two volumes; as is the case with the Royal Collection, I have volume I.
It is 231 pages, including 31 pages of plates. Of these, there are 9 chromo-lithographed color plates of uniforms after paintings by the English military illustrator Richard Simkin. There are also portraits, and lots of maps, charts and lists.
The 78th Highland Regiment of Foot was raised in 1793 by Colonel Francis Humberston MacKenzie and Lord Seaforth (Chief of the Clan MacKenzie) at Fort George, some 15 miles northeast of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. Initially a single regiment of foot, a second battalion was added a year later, but they merged in 1796… Leer más

This is an original watercolor by the Canadian architect and artist Hugh Douglas "Bungje" Robertson (1900-1996). Its title is Harbour at Stockholm. It is signed and dated 1972.
Robertson was born in Hamilton ON and attended the School of Architecture at Montreal's McGill University, graduating in 1925. He was formed in drawing by his friend, the French-Canadian artist Edmond Dyonnet but, in painting, was mainly self-taught.
As an architect, he was in partnership with Lester Birley Husband, off and on, until 1953--this was interrupted by periods working as a draftsman and architectural designer in Miami, Montreal, and New York. During World War II, he worked as an Assistant Architect in the Naval Services Branch of the Royal Canadian Navy in Ottawa. In 1957, he retired from architecture to paint full-time. He traveled extensively in Europe and the West Indies painting in oil but, mostly, in watercolor. Robertson was a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Canadian Academy.… Leer más

Descripción:
This is a trade paperback of The Liri Valley: Canada's WWII Breakthrough to Rome, written by the Canadian military historian Mark Zuehlke.
For the Allied Armies fighting their way up the Italian boot in early 1944. Rome was the prize that could only be won through one of the greatest offensives of the war. It is a gripping story of courage in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.
The Liri Valley was a long, flat corridor through miles of rugged mountains. At one end stood the formidable Monte Cassino, at the other, Rome. In May 1944, I Canadian Corps drops up this valley toward the Italian capital, facing the infamous Hitler Line -- a bastion of concrete bunkers fronted by wide swaths of tangled barbed wire, minefields, and "Tobruk" weapon pits. The ensuing battle resulted in Canada's single bloodiest day of the Italian campaign. But the sacrifice of young Canadians during the twenty-four days of relentless combat it took to clear the valley paved the way for the Allies to take Rome. The Liri… Leer más

This is a first edition of The Long Left Flank: The Hard Fought Way to the Reich, 1944-1945, by the Canadian Army officer and military historian Jeffery Williams (1920-2011).
It is the story of the battle to clear the Channel coast and open the port of Antwerp. The struggle, which saw appalling casualties, is not well-known because the battle of Normandy was going on at the same time. Loss would have been a disaster; its result was victory in the Rhineland.
348 pages, with strategic plans, maps and photographs.
This book is in near-mint condition. It has half a dozen fingerprints and 2 dogears. Otherwise, perfect.

This is a first edition of Man-of-War, a History of the Combat Vessel, published in 1968. It is richly illustrated, and discusses how these ships made, and formed, history. It is the first to chronicle the epic of the fighting ship--"a thing of beauty and grace"--from ancient Egypt, when Rameses III was repulsing The Sea People, to the naval operations at the Gulf of Tonkin in 1964. Over 300 illustrations, many in color, show structure and form, equipment, machinery and weapons.273 pages. It's a big, heavy book. The dust jacket, which is unclipped, is not in the best of shape. This is a first edition of My Father's Son, Memories of War and Peace by the great Canadian author Farley Mowat (1921-2014). It is his collection of the letters between him and his father during Farley's time as a soldier during WWII. As one critic wrote "The lettersare testimony that life continues in the darkest circumstances. This collection of letters is a window back to the dark days of the Second World War, as seen through the jaded eyes of a young man who would become a famous writer."
340 pages, including a few photographs. Unclipped dust jacket. This books was never read, or even opened. It was a gift from a daughter to a father, and there is an inscription on the front endpaper. Below that is Mowat's signature.
Aside from the inscription, and a tiny bit of darkening of the paper on the inside flap of the dust jacket, there is not a mark in or on this book. It is pristine.

This is an unread copy of The New Morningside Papers, the second volume of letters, opinion and stories by the famed Canadian journalist and broadcaster Peter Gzowski (1934-2002). Gzowski hosted various shows on CBC Radio for 30 years; his pieces are funny, sad, entertaining and informative.I say that this is a first edition because I don't believe that his books were ever issued in hardcover. If they were, the soft cover editions were issued in the same year. I've only seen them in 6" x 9" trade paperback, which is what this copy is. 408 pages, with little illustrations. This book has never been read, or even opened. But the paper has darkened quite a bit. Descripción:
This is a first edition of The Noose of Laurels, The Discovery of the North Pole, published in 1989. It is both a valuable addition to Arctic history, and a gripping adventure story.Who was the first to reach the North Pole: Frederick Cook or Robert Peary? Or did neither? This book provides a plausible answer. After the British National Geographic Society persuaded Peary's family to finally release his diary, notes and astronomical observations, veteran polar explorer Wally Herbert was invited to assess them. Herbert, who retraced the routes of both men, provides an intensive examination of each man's claim to the Pole. He demolishes Cook's claim, then seriously questions Peary's. You have to read the book to learn his verdict. 395 pages, including photos. This was slated for review by the Vancouver Sun. The editor wrote 'For Review' on a post-it note and stuck it to the cover. Then she put the dust jacket back on, no one ever reviewed it, and that post-it note has been until today. So there's a glue… Leer más

This is a collection of three books, two of which are by the Canadian engineer and railway historian Robert Legget (1904-1994).
The first is Railways of Canada, a best-seller, originally published in 1973, which tells the story of railways in Canada from the 1830s. This is a heavily illustrated 255-page trade paperback from 1980. Aside from a spot on the side at the back of the book, and the crease to the cover which you can see, it's in perfect condition.
The second book is Canadian Railways in Pictures, which was written by Leggett in 1977. This is the second paperback edition, published in 1985. It is a large trade paperback, 96 pages, with several photographs on every page.
The third book is Canadian Railway Scenes No. 3, compiled by Adolf & Okan in 1986. It includes vintage scenes of CP and CN, photos from the Last Spike Centennial, and the Trans-Canada to Expo '86 Restored Luxury Train.
Also included here are three pieces that were tucked into the larger book: a brochure from O.S. Live Steam… Leer más

This is an unread copy of Ready Aye Ready, An Illustrated History of the Royal Canadian Navy, which was written in 1989 by Lt-Cdr Jack MacBeth. It was a best-seller; this copy is from its 6th printing, in 1993.
It is a lovely book, heavily illustrated with photographs, paintings and propaganda art. It begins with the RCN's creation in 1914, follows it through the Battle of the Atlantic and the Invasion of Europe and goes up to the 80s.
176 pages but heavy. Unclipped dust jacket.
It has not been read, or even opened. It creaks when you open it.
There's a small scuff to the dust jacket, just at the edge, and some of that scuff continues to the cover of the book itself.
That is its only flaw. It is otherwise pristine.

Descripción:
This is a first edition of Redcoats, written in 1976 by the British Army Colonel A.J.Barker (1918-1981). The sub-title is 'They made America safe for Americans, and Canada safe for Canadians.'
The Redcoats (British Regulars), were known as the Colonial bogeymen—vilified by the British at home, hated by the French and the Indians, and reviled by the Americans. They arrived in America in 1755 and proved themselves to be as adept at European-style warfare as they were at the sniper-based battles with Indians and frontiersmen. And, by weakening the Indians and halting the French expansion from the north, it was really the Americans they were serving. It is an intimate and intricate study of an interesting and influential military machine.
156 pages. The dust jacket (unclipped) has significant wear. There is a line of fading on the front cover. The paper has darkened. Otherwise perfect.
