Cantabrigiae (Cambridge): Typis Academicis Wxcudit Joannes Smith, 1829. Marbled boards and endpapers. Panelled spine with gilt letters. Joints and raised bands are rubbed, binding is quite firm. Small owner's name on tag at top of front pastedown. The poem is included in "Prolusiones Academicae Praemis Annuis Dignatae et In Curia Cantibrigiensi recitatae comitiis Maximis". The first publication of Tennyson's second published work, the FIRST under his own name. Accredited to A. Tennyson, of Trinity College. The poem is printed on nine pages, with the preferred ":cones" on p.10. Other poems by C.R. Kennedy in Greek and by Charles Merivale. 41pp. in all. See CBEL lll, pp. 253-255.. London: W. Bulmer and Company, 1799. Rebound in mid-1970's with binder's note at rear. Original endpapers. Half-title. Frontipiece engraving of the author with off-setting onto the title-page. Collated complete with three folding maps and six plates counting the frontispiece. The first map of Mr. Park's route has red and blue route markings. All maps are intact and in very good condition. A small 1" tear at insertion of the map of North Africa has been repaired with archival tape, no paper loss. Slight off-setting onto adjacent pages of the full-page plates. Brown spot upper margin of pp. 61-73 (see photo). Page 313 has a closed tear at upper edge, no paper loss, likely a paper flaw from time of printing. This copy contains the Negro Song with two pages of music at conclusion as a postscript, frequently missing. A very good, kindly rebound copy. xxviii, 372, xcii, (v). Photo of Cyril Ritchard and Eddie Mayehoff on rear panel.This is the play based on the television script for an episode of Goodyear Television Playhouse aired on May 8, 1955. The play starring Mr. Ritchard, who also directed the play, ran 388 performances in 1957-58. The play was then made into a Hollywood film, starring Jerry Lewis, in 1960.
