Binding board edgeworn and corner rounded, though calf spine nice and giltstamping bright; text block typically age toned; frontispiece an appropriate contemporary replacement. Tight and decent copy of this Spanish text which translates as "Civil Code of the Federal District and Territories." Unusual -- and quite handleable.

Jacket a bit edge chipped, mainly at top of rear panel, but complete and overall rather attractive. Tight, handsome first edition.

Lake George: Halcyon Press, 1969. Hardcover. 8vo. Burgundy cloth with gilt lettering. 176pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, map and decorative endpapers. Near fine. Handsome, tight first edition of these laid back recollections and anecdotes prepared (to cite title page) "on his Ninetieth Birthday April 21, 1969" from the hard-hitting lawyer, civic activist and New York states attorney (1879-1971) who also ran as Republican for governor of that state in 1930, losing to Franklin D. Roosevelt. He boldly inscribes and signs the half-title page (on his 90th birthday!) in blue ballpoint "To my very dear / friend and colleague, / Thomas A Shaw, Jr., and / to his lovely wife / Charles H Tuttle / April 21, 1969." Shaw was an attorney with Breed, Abbott & Morgan in New York, and in later years Tuttle served as counsel emeritus there; he and Shaw served as co-counsel on many high-level cases together. Tuttle kept a summer home at Lake George, New York, and named Halcyon Press after this home.

Both bindings superb and tight, both jackets with faint edgewear only. A tight and sharp pair of first editions of the memoirs of this famed New York attorney and A.C.L.U. figure.

Quite tight and lovely first edition of this survey of 22 well-known murder cases, grouped into categories such as "Murder by Young Persons," "Triumphs of Science and Finger-Prints," "Triumphs of Routine Police Investigation," "Not Guilty" and "Accident, Murder or Suicide?

Frontispiece, marbled endpapers, sewn-in tan satin page marker. Fine. Alan M. Dershowitz introduces this "special edition" facsimile reprint of the 1937 first edition (Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company), a volume in "The Notable Trials Library." Also seen in black calf, though no priority established.

Mildly edgeworn and with a bit of cloth "flecking," though spine gilt strong and bright. First edition of this memoir by the British-born American attorney and author (1832-1908), largely covering his Civil War naval experiences, first as paymaster of the U.S.S. Lehigh then as Judge Advocate of the South Atlantic Squadron aboard the U.S.S. Philadelphia under General John A. Dalhgren. He boldly inscribes and signs the front flyleaf in brown ink to "Capt. T.B. Johnston. / Compliments of / Charles Cowley" -- Johnston likely the same Captain T.B. Johnson who served with the 30th Massachusetts Veteran Volunteers. Most unusual. NEVINS I, 221.

A tight and attractive first edition of this blistering attack on what the American legal profession has become over the past fifty years -- by one of its top practitioners. He boldly inscribes and signs the front flyleaf in green ink: "To / Bob Malott / With warmest / regards to a friend / and colleague who / searches for truth / and justice. / Sol M. Linowitz." Linowitz (1913-2005) was a top-level attorney, businessman and diplomat. Robert Malott (1926-2018) was a noted Chicago business leader, CEO of FMC Corporation, Republican politico and philanthropist.

Blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. xix, 182pp. Very good. A tight and nice first edition of this thorough listing of books by and about the fourth U.S. Chief Justice. Ex-library -- as are almost all copies -- but quite mild, with very few, discreet and inoffensive markings.

Evanston: The Branding Iron Press, 1955. Paperback. Narrow small 8vo. Stiff tan wrappers. 20pp. Very good. Minor wear to outer wrappers (only), else internally tight and fine. First, "Limited Numbered Edition" (this copy stamped #131) of this unusual little pamphlet. Brayer's address to the Chicago Westerners chronicles this Michigan lawman whose murder on May 10, 1892, was solved almost half a century later. A pink printed "Word in Explanation" slip laid in remarks, "While it certainly will win no graphic arts awards, collectors of Western Americana will see in it an interesting historical contribution in the traditional format of the rare ephemeral pieces which are so avidly sought in every out-of-the-way book shop and community in America. It's [sic] unusual imprint -- Owensville, Indiana -- is certain to make it additionally valuable to the collector...." Likely sole printing of this company's 80th anniversary compilation of writings, which include a brief speech by Congressman William A. Rodenberg from Illinois, a portion of an address by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter honoring (oddly enough) German-born American novelist Thomas Mann, and a lengthy Kiwanis Club address by C.C. Burford titled "Abraham Lincoln and the Pioneer Railroads of the Central West." Tipped to the front flyleaf is a printed 6" X 9" handbill dated 11 September 1946 and signed in type by Isaac Kuhn, whose firm published this book, presenting this book "on their 82nd anniversary of business in Champaign" and discussing it, closing with "N.B.--Enclosed autograph may be attached in book" -- and sure enough tipped to the top of this handbill is a 4½" X 1½" slip on which is boldly… Leer más
