Original "Final Statement" for Private John Wallace of the 24th Infantry, dated May 1, 1875, 2 pages, signed by Wallace with his mark and by John Gilmore, Captain of the 24th InfantryPlus a 2-page document settling the accounts for Private Wallace, dated May 7, 1875. John Wallace, a soldier with "black complexion, black eyes, black hair, and by occupation a farmer," was part of the all-black 24th Infantry known as Buffalo Soldiers serving in the western United States. Their missions included garrisoning frontier posts, battling American Indians, protecting roadways against bandits, and guarding the border between the United States and Mexico. John Gilmore was commissioned into the 16th New York Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1892 for "distinguished conduct" at the Battle of Salem Heights, Virginia, May 3, 1863. George Grenville Benedict, who fought with 12th Vermont Infantry, was among a group of men involved in the successful flank attack on Pickett's Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg. The Muster Roll lists names and signatures of over 100 men in the regiment as they reach their destination of Atlanta, Georgia, signed on back by Wildreck, dated October 31, 1868, Artillery Camp Post of Atlanta, GA. Also signed by each man. The document states where and when the men were enlisted, and by whom; when paid and amount paid; general remarks, etc. The men enlisted at Portland ME, New York City, Raleigh, NC, Ft. Wayne, IN, Cleveland, OH, Chicago, IL, Atlanta, GA, Davenport, IA, etc. The document is ~ 20 by 26 inches, plus an additional sheet of ~10 by 26 inches, folded horizontally and vertically. Abram Calvin Wildrick (August 5, 1836 - November 16, 1894) was a career United States Army officer who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Turici (Zurich): impensis Ziegleri et fil, 1790. First Edition. The only edition of a specialist botanical work on the species of amaranthus by Carolo Willdenow, director of the Berlin Botanical Garden. The engravings are designed and engraved by R.J. Schellenberg. Willdenow is considered one of the founders of phytogeography, the study of the geographic distribution of plants. He was also a mentor of Alexander von Humboldt, one of the earliest and best known phytogeographers. Willdenow was interested in the adaptation of plants to climate, showing that similar climates had plants with common characteristics. His herbarium, containing more than 20,000 species, is preserved in the Botanical Garden in Berlin. Occasional foxing; title page browned; plates in very good condition.

It reads in part, I hasten to thank you for it, and through you all my young friends, whose names are written in it. Please say to them how highly I am gratified by this mark of their esteem and consideration . . . With 2 bookplates, including that of Mary Lecomte du Noüy. Some light staining and peeling to boards; head and heel of spines chipped; former signature erased; some foxing and minor ink stains; o/w Very Nice. Both volumes enclosed in red morocco box.

Illustrated with 3 portraits and 9 fold-out lithographic plans, including a large fold-out "Military Map of Zulu Land and Adjacent Parts of Natal and Transvaal" at the rear. 8vo. Original green cloth, gilt letters on spine, gilt vignette of 3 Zulu weapons on front cover. London: W.H. Allen & Co. . . . 1880. First Edition. The author was special correspondent to the British forces from the entry into Natal at the very start of 1878, through the battles from Isandhlwana to Ulundi in July 1879 and the subsequent winding up of the campaign after that victory. His detailed account is the most authoritative description of the Zulu War in South Africa. Signed by Stephen Crane after his story, The Wise Men. Also signed by 5 of the 6 other contributors: John Langdon Heaton, Irving Bacheller, Post Wheeler, Charles Gaines and Charles Lewis. Cranes story is the first of 7 pieces and it occupies more than half the volume. It was once believed that he signed only 10 to 15 copies, but that number now seems low. It is safe to say he did not signed all copies and the number he did sign is in question. Crane died at age 28, and his signature is exceedingly rare. Scuffing to the front and back covers; paper label soiled; front endpaper slightly wrinkled; some foxing to a few of the preliminary pages; o/w very nice. Uncut; partially unopened. Scarce

Formed in 1880 as the result of a merger between Telephone Company of New York and American Bell Telephone, the Metropolitan Telephone and Telegraph Co. served the greater New York City area until 1896 when it consolidated with various other companies under the name of the New York Telephone Company. Directories were published annually from 1880 to 1896, with several gaps. This historically significant directory lists the names, phone numbers, occupations, and addresses for numerous residents and businesses in New York City and the surrounding area, including New Jersey and Greenwich, Connecticut. Cover worn, edges chipped and taped; spine taped; back cover detached; scattered chipping with some tape repairs to first few leaves; o/w interior clean and sound. A fascinating look into the early days of the telephone.
