National Geographic Society, Washington, D.C., 1942. This is a hard-bound copy of the first 6 months of the National Geographic published in 1942. The volume is bound in very handsome embossed leather-like material with an intricate cover design of leaves, a world globe and a Spirit-of-St. Louis type monoplane on the front. [10" X 7"] The gilding on the front cover has faded a bit, but that on the spine is better. When these six issues were published, war had just begun for the U.S. The Geographic seems to have taken a strange approach to the world situation. There are stories that are tangential to the war, but mostly, they seem to ignore it or gloss over it. Quite possibly, the stories had been "in the pipline" for some time, and the Geographic could not suddenly change its content. Grammercy, New York, 1995. 9.25" X 6.25" in hard covers. This is a recent reprint of the 1892 edition of this classic history/travel book which was illustrated by Frederick Remington. The book is in excellent condition except for a longish owner dedication on the flyleaf - VERY GOOD to VERY GOOD PLUS. The jacket shows a little soiling and shelfwear: VERY GOOD MINUS to VERY GOOD condition. 411pp.. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good.

The text is by Henry Mahew; the illustrations are by Birket Foster who did the original drawings which were later engraved for the book by others. Book is VG+ or better, Jacket has some miniscule abrasions near the top left corner, otherwise VG or better, in a slipcase covered in black cloth with gilt decoration. Slipcase is slightly scuffed and some of the cloth is pulling loose (easily repairable) at the bottom edge. About VG-. This is a book of large format color photos of Saudi Arabia. Hawaii Tourist Bureau, Honolulu, Hawaii, 1925. It is hard to believe thatone would have to promote tourism to Hawaii, but such was once apparently the case. This little booklet (approx. 9 X 6" in paper covers) contains a wealth of information about Hawaii as it was in 1925. The table of contents is quite comprehensive - from what to wear to "cables and radio" to street Cars, to outrigger canoes. 32pp. Most pages have a B&W photo illustration plus a charming color drawing. Adorable and informative. Note: covers - esp. the front - are soiled. Contents excellent. X/S/N. Soft cover. Good/No Jacket.

A.O.P. Nicholson, Washington, D.C., 1855. 11 1/2 X 9 3/8" in red leather with gilt lettering on the spine. Very lightly soiled, a little rubbing at spine extremities, bottom corners very slightly bumped. Foxed. Volume II only. This 150 year old book is in really remarkable shape. It is tight and solid feeling. The plates - all 35 of them, are marvelous. Several are hand colored. There are also 2 maps and 11 woodcut illustrations. Most of the book is comprised of an amazingly detailed report on a journey "across the Andes and Pampas of the Argentine Provinces." Included in the discussion are reports on Indian Antiquities, Chilean minerals, birds - shown in beautiful color plates- fish and other animals. Really a remarkable volume - and quite handsome.
