Descripción:
Prescott, AZ: Gosham A. Bray Treasurer Tonto Basin Wagon Road, 1883. The check is issued to one Henry Burns under the authority of Gorham A. Bray, who was the Treasurer for the Tonto Basin Wagon Road Commissioners. Henry Burns worked nine days for $10. From an oral history by five of the living Arizona Rangers made at Northern Arizona University, we learn of the initial roads that were built around the Grand Canyon to haul lumber from which were built ferry boats on the Colorado River. A ferry operated until 1882, then the Babbitt family hired Indian help and built a road for people coming from Nevada and Utah. This Tonto Basin Road was being built in 1883. Eventually, these roads connected Prescott, Kingman and went all the way to Flagstaff as well as Strawberry and Pine. The Sharlot Hall Museum has a nice picture of Gorham Bray, the Treasurer for the Tonto Basin Road operation who later became Mayor of Flagstaff. Though the Soldier Tanks are not in Bryd Howell Granger or Will C. Barnes, they were… Leer más

Descripción:
Prescott, [AZ], 1864. Slight variations in text from the printed published the next year (1865). Possibly W. Claude Jones copy. The printed version adds: "shall take effect and be in force from and after the passage of this act." Two page document signed by Governor John Goodwin, President of the Legislative Council, Coles Bashford and W. Claude-Jones who was Speaker of the House of Representatives. Page one measures 9 1/2" x 15; Page two measures 10 1/2" x 15". Included is the original bill number (46) signed by James Anderson who was the official clerk of the House. It measures 4" x 5 1/4". This remarkable document is important for several reasons. First, it can be compared for minute differences with the actual printed forms of both the Journals of the First Legislative Assembly as well as the Acts, Memorials and Resolutions which were published the following year (1865). The goal was to both exclude minors (under age 21) from losing their hard earned money as well as helping each county to… Leer más

Phoenix, AZ (1994): Pine Rim Publishing. First Edition. Quarto. First printing, limited to 300 copies signed by the author. The present copy is #31. 141 pages. Illustrated with photographic images. While Daniel Herman's Hell on the Range remains the single most important book on the conflictt known as "the Pleasant Valley War", Hatchett, like Dedera and Forrest, is a frequent source of this important work. The publishers write: "Pleasant Valley, Arizona in the 1880's was no place for the faint of heat. In less than one hundred days, thirteen men lose their lives. These were not Hollywood style, face to face shootouts. The attacks were almost always surprise or from ambush." The maps are very important, and the book's layout allows the reader to see the overall picture better than any of its predecessors. A fine copy bound in brown leather like cloth, spine lettering gilt, in a fine pictorial dust jacket.

Descripción:
A letter addressed to Friend Clark, dated February 15, 1901 (in answer to letter to a check for $50.00 that was due the previous November). H.W. Adams arrived from Maine and became the superintendent of William H. Bartlett's Sahuaro Ranch. Adams was with the Glendale (Az) Livestock Association which soon ended and Adams who served as President donated the $1,000 to the library to purchase books. It was the completion of the Arizona Canal in 1885 that led to the development of the Glendale area and by 1897 there were several large cattle ranches located there. Adams Cattle Company eventually merged with Herbert W. Hamilton to form the Hamilton and Adams Cattle Company. Adams became an officer of the Maricopa Loan and Trust Company and developed many kinds of produce as the 1904-1905 report of the American Pomological Society reveals. Curiously, Kaila White of the Arizona Republic wrote an article on the Paranormal that exists at Glendale's Historic Sahuaro Ranch Park where a woman in a white gown… Leer más

Descripción:
Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1890. Octavo. 15p. A good copy disbound with very light wear but no loss of text. A scarce item (OCLC shows only the Senate version at the University of Arizona). H.R. 3933 introduced by Marcus Aurelius Smith. Arizona's difficulty in becoming recognized first as a territory is well known but as a state here was their first rejection, followed by others in 1896, 1903 and the 1909-1910 vote which passed both Houses of Congress but was vetoed by President Taft because the Arizona Constitution allowed for the recall of judges. Once statehood was approved in 1912, the legislature quietly reinstated that provision. Marcus Smith who introduced the mail moved his San Francisco practice of law in 1881 to Tombstone where he served as a Democrat in Congress and once the state was admitted to the Union he was elected again only now as a Senator. A disbound copy.
