New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. First Thus. First printing. Octavo; black cloth with front cover illustration in color; 260pp; frontispiece and two unnumbered leaves of color plates; text illus. Near FIne, lacking the dustwrapper. Bookseller's ticket at rear (Traver's Bookstore, Trenton, NJ). Compellingly, the book bears the printed bookplate of "Orville Wright - McDonogh 1873" to the front pastedown. From what we can discern, however, this is not the ex-libris of the famous inventor and aviator; rather more likely that of one Orville Wright Donnelly, born 1923 and a 1940 graduate of McDonogh School in Owings Mills, MD.

London: A&C Black, 1906. First Edition. First impression. Octavo (23cm). Publisher's pictorial cloth, with gilt spine titles; x,281,[8]pp; frontispiece and 62 unnumbered leaves of color plates, after original paintings by Warwick Goble. A tight, straight copy, complete with all 63 plates and the folding map; very lightly rubbed at spine ends with tiny abrasion at foot of front joint, still Very Good or better but lacking the very scarce dustwrapper. In Black's lavishly-produced "20 shilling" Series, this volume especially desirable for the atmospheric illustrations by Warwick Goble, best-known as an illustrator of childrens' books.

Mexico: Blas Vanegas Arroyo, 1919. Broadside, printed in black on newsprint (measuring 40cm x 60cm), with text in six columns, large engraving at center, beneath five smaller ones. Faint horizontal fold smoothed out at center, a few tiny tears along margins, expected toning; Very Good or better. Well-preserved example of this large Calavera broadside attributed to Manuel Manilla (see Rothenstein, Posada: Messenger of Mortality, p.172) a Mexican illustrator and engraver who was a follower of Posada's. At center is a nightmarish image of the much-disliked president Victoriano Huerta, who came to power in a coup during the Mexican Revolution. The calavera depicts Huerta "metamorphosed into a giant spider, often spoken of as a cut by Posada. This violently anti-Huerta sheet could not have been published earlier than July 15, 1914, the date of Huerta's resignation. A fine set, with printed bookplate of noted zoologist James G. Mead to each volume. A lavishly-produced collection of Peterson's ornithological illustrations, all reproduced in fine color.

Newark, NJ: Swingshift, 1951. First Edition. Slim octavo (17.75cm); original pictorial card wrappers, stapled; 32pp; illus. Light wear to extremities, some faint stress creases to wrappers; contents clean; Very Good+ or better. Proletarian literary and art journal produced by the Writers Workshop of New Jersey, a group comprised of "working artists and writers. And when we say 'working', we mean that we work for a living at benches, counters, desks and machines just as you do. Everything in this magazine was written and drawn after we got home from work...". Contents include contributions by Anthony J. Cascone, Sylvia Kolb, Ben Turner, John Kolb, Rae Tezi, Isaiah Williams, David Fleming, John Ackerson, and others. Publication appears to have ceased after three issues. OCLC notes 10 locations with any holdings.

Two very faint vertical bends, a few tiny tears to wrapper extremities, else an uncharacteristically fresh, very Near Fine copy. Contents include contributions by Max Eastman, Louis Untermeyer, John Reed, Austin Lewis, Sara Bard Field, and others. Illustrations throughout by Art Young, Arthur B. Davies, K.R. Chamberlain, Elias Goldberg, and others, with cover art and a large centerfold spread by Boardman Robinson.

New York: Modern Age Books, 1939. First Edition. Wrappered Issue. Quarto (28cm); pictorial card wrappers; 21pp [text] + 70pp illus. Modest rubbing to joints and extremities, some faint creasing to wrappers, with a few faint scuffs to front cover; Very Good. Reproductions of Quintanilla's subtle pencil sketches of scenes from the Spanish Civil War; this was probably the most popular of the many such sketchbooks that appeared in the wake of the conflict. With an introduction by Ernest Hemingway. There was a simultaneous "deluxe" edition of 400 copies in boards. HANNEMAN B34.

Mild bumps to corners, else Fine. An attractive, well-preserved copy. There was a simultaneous hardcover issue. Ambitious collaboration between the noted Peruvian-American fantasy illustrator and his first wife, pairing the former's erotically charged illustrations with the latter's fantasy-themed poetry. The title has been reprinted twice; first printings are comparatively hard to find, especially in nice condition.

First issued as "Raw One-Shot no.2" (NY: Raw Comics, 1983). A graphic and textual polemic against South African apartheid. An early and compelling work by Coe, whose blend of comic, punk, and political sensibilities revolutionized left-wing art in the Nineties.

In chartreuse cloth stamped in gold on front; plain endpapers; x, 12, [164]pp; 40 color plates. A bright, clean copy, rubbed and sunned lightly at upper edge, else Near Fine. Facsimile of Bateman's 1837-43 work on orchids, of which only 125 copies were printed. Wilfrid Blunt describes the original as "probably the finest, and certainly the largest botanical book ever produced with lithographic plates" (The Art of Botanical Illustration p.214). In original purple ribbon-embossed cloth, faded to brown, with title in gilt on paper spine label, all edges gilt; yellow coated endpapers; [i]-viii [9]-240pp; lithographic frontispiece by "Pendleton's Lithography Boston," with tissue guard. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Eliza A. Bailey A birth day present from her Father." Tight and fresh, with two one-cm perforations to front joint and two smaller perforations to rear joint; cloth faded; internally bright, with occasional foxing to margins; overall Very Good. Originally published as Letters on Practical Subjects to a Daughter. Sprague, a pastor, published numerous sermons and edited and wrote The Annals of the American Pulpit, which contained biographical information about hundreds of American clergymen (ANB). Original maroon buckram, titled in gilt on spine and front cover; 42pp. A few very faint freckles of foxing to endpapers, still a Near Fine copy, retaining most of the original unprinted glassine dustwrapper. A tale of the First World War. The frontispiece by John Austen is quite fine.

New York: Coward-McCann, 1928. First Edition. 12mo (17cm). Pale yellow paper over boards in yellow jacket; unpaginated; 3 plates by "Hogarth, Jr.," a pseudonym of Rockwell Kent. Lightly rubbed at edges, with fading to spine: Very Good. Jacket faded and soiled at spine, with general mild dustiness, chips at head, short tear at lower front flap: around Very Good. [63697].

Extra-illustrated, with numerous clipped illustrations laid down in blank areas in the book. Minor edgewear, slight superficial abrasion to cloth on front, small stain to upper rear board, rear hinge partially cracked, else sound and clean: Very Good. A unique and intriguing copy of this memoir of the early American West by a military officer. [63287].
