N.p.: N.p., 1998. A three page typed letter signed from John Irving to James Salter, with the first leaf on Irving's letterhead, dated July 28, 1998. Six annotations in manuscript ink in Irving's hand, correcting grammar. A charming letter regarding family matters, Random House editor Kate Medina, and pre-production of the 1999 Academy Award winning film The Cider House Rules, based on Irving's 1985 novel. Irving begins by expressing unease about an impending family move, and frets about enrollment at his new school-likely the Maple Street School, which Irving cofounded with his wife, Janet Turnbull-Irving, in 1998. Irving then relays a humorous anecdote about his young child's swimming competition at summer camp, before briefly discussing Random House editor Kate Medina, expressing concern for her husband. With Lipman and Mann's pictorial bookplate adhered to the front pastedown. Clara Lipman and her husband Louis Mann were actors in New York at the turn of the century, appearing primarily in musical comedies. The couple starred together in a number of Broadway productions, including "The Laughing Girl" in 1893 and "The Girl from Paris" in 1897. Mann and Lipman were close friends of Fannie Hurst, and Hurst was purportedly at Mann's bedside with Lipman when he passed away in 1931. Basis for the 1946 film noir directed by Jean Negulesco, starring Joan Crawford, John Garfield, and Oscar Levant. Good only, lacking the scarce dust jacket. Boards slightly bowed, with inside front hinge starting and moderate wear to the spine.

Easton and Kenneth Millar were longtime friends and Santa Barbara residents. Millar's inscription refers to their shared efforts in the mid-1960s to save the California condor, a species native to the Santa Barbara mountains that was nearing extinction in 1964. Millar would write the foreword to Easton's 1972 book "Black Tide," an exposé of the consequences of oil drilling on the California coastline. The thirteenth Lew Archer novel. Ursie, the recipient of the inscription (and here identified as a sort of portmanteau, "Ursiestan"), was Richter's daughter-whom he evidently hoped would write him more often. Text and titles in German. With a note of provenance on the stationery of filmmaker Standish Lawder, Ursie's husband. German-born artist Hans Richter enjoyed a long career as a painter, avant-gardist, political radical, and filmmaker, co-founding the Association of Revolutionary Artists in Zurich, and regularly contributing to the Dutch periodical De Stijl. A scarce promotional songbook issued by Twentieth Century-Fox in connection with their successful 1938 musical film "Alexander's Ragtime Band." Dorothy Hechtlinger was Twentieth Century-Fox studio head Darryl F. Zanuck's script coordinator from 1934 to 1945, described by later biographers as an "indispensable" part of Zanuck's team. Although uncredited in the 1938 film, Hechtlinger would likely have been intimately involved in the screenwriting process. The songbook contains piano transcriptions of three new songs written for the film-including "Now It Can Be Told," "My Walking Stick," and "Marching Along with Time"-as well as 25 other songs written by Berlin. A remarkable and extremely detailed breakdown of the classic 1952 British film noir, "The Secret People," directed by Thorold Dickinson. Anderson, here in the role of film historian, was a prominent figure of the Free Cinema and British New Wave movements as a filmmaker and film critic, later directing films such as "If..." Published the same year as Tourneur's directorial debut, "They All Come Out." Tourneur would go on to direct 70 films over a 40 year career, including the first three horror films for legendary producer Val Lewton, "Cat People" (1942), "I Walked with a Zombie" (1943), and "The Leopard Man" (1943), as well as the classic film noir "Out of the Past" (1947).
