A scholarly, well-researched and authoritative study of excavations of St Augustine's Abbey at Canterbury, Kent. The details of the finds include, pottery, stonework, window glass, floor tiles, roof tiles, lead and ironwork, and more. The abbey was a Benedictine monastery founded by St Augustine around 597 which functioned as a monastery until its dissolution in 1538 during the English Reformation. St Augustine arrived in Anglo-Saxon England in 597, having been sent by a missionary-minded Pope Gregory 1 to convert the Anglo-Saxons. The King of Kent at this time was Ethelbert and, although he worshipped in a pagan temple, his queen, Bertha, was a Christian. King Ethelbert gave St Augustine a grant of land and the wooden temple. Illustrated with engravings; engraved title-page. xviii,275pp. An attempt to prove the validity of the Bible by the scientific study of archaeology and articles of antiquity, such as monuments, sculptures, gems, coins and medals. On the verso of the front endpaper there is a gift inscription from an 84 year old reverend 'to his young friend' dated 1840, with a pin-pricked crucifix (size 52 by 23 mm) affecting this endpaper only; on the recto of the second endpaper there is an inscription 'In remembrance also of a departed friend' (presumably the old reverend); some spotting to preliminary pages; the leather is chipped and rubbed along all edges; the upper and lower outer hinges have 22mm and 17mm cracking at head of spine, the book is very secure; else a very good copy of the SCARCE 1831 first edition..
