Descripción:
XVI, 192; XIV, 418 pp.Remarkable set of two classics on the life of Muhammad, a complete set. Ad 1 delves into the life of Muhammad, focusing primarily on the initial stage of his public mission. This work encompasses his time in Mecca up until his pivotal journey to Medina, known as the hijra. Its author, William Montgomery Watt was one of the most renowned non-Muslim scholars specializing in Islamic studies, often called “the last orientalist”. Building upon the foundation laid by Muhammad at Mecca, Watt continued his exploration in his subsequent 1956 publication, Muhammad at Medina (ad 2), serving as a continuation of the narrative. Subsequently, a condensed version of these two volumes was published under the title Muhammad Prophet and Statesman in 1961, appealing to a wider readership. Collectively, these two academic volumes constitute "a narrative chronicling the journey of Muhammad's life and the genesis of the Islamic society", focusing particularly on his time in Medina. 24 pp.Rare and remarkable periodical, published by the Palestine National Liberation Movement or Fatah. This was a revolutionary group, and later a political party, founded in 1957 by Yasser Arafat (1929-2004), Khalil al-Wazir (1935-1988) and 3 or 4 others. The movement published numerous periodicals and pamphlets between 1968-1972, but Fateh is the most important one. Originally published in Arabic, it was also issued in English from 1969 (bi-weekly), in French from 1970 (monthly) and in Italian from 1971 (bi-weekly). We have not been able to find any other English issues of this periodical for sale anywhere else. The name of the group, Fatah, is an acronym in reverse for "Harakat al-Tahrir al-Watani al-Filastini", the Arabic translation of "Palestine National Liberation Movement". The intention of the founders was to create an organisation that was independent of governments and political parties, with the goal to liberate Palestine through low-intensity guerilla warfare. It was part of several armed… Leer más

[14], 252, [6] pp.Late (last?) edition of one of the better known works on hydrotherapy and the therapeutic use of mineral waters, concentrating on the baths of Spa, known already in Roman times and iconic for the history of the wide spread phenomenon of ‘Taking the waters’, ‘balneotherapy’, or ‘hydrotherapy’.Henri de Heers (1570-1636) was a physician from Liege who first published his Spadacrene, hoc est Fons Spadanus in Latin in 1614. After many editions in both Latin and French, another physician from Liege, Werner Chouet edited a corrected and enlarged French edition in 1739 in The Hague (our copy). Chouet was an expert who had written a study on the waters of Spa and other places himself: La connoisance des eaux minerals d’Aix-la-Chapelle, de Chaud-Fontaine, & de Spa (1714). V, [2], 524 pp.Second - much enlarged - edition of Gould’s Report on the Invertebrata of Massachusetts which first appeared in 1841. It was the first monograph published in the United States that attempted to describe the entire molluskan fauna of a geographical region. The book, one of the most important monuments of Gould’s scientific work, greatly encouraged the study of mollusks in the United States and was illustrated with more than 200 figures drawn by Gould himself, who states "Every species described, indeed almost every species mentioned, has passed under my own eye. The descriptions of species previously known, have been written anew; partly, that they may be more minute in particulars, and party, with the hope of using language somewhat less technical than is ordinarily employed by scientific men". Binding shows very minor signs of wear, minor tear in the inner margin (near the spine) of the title-page, without affecting the title or other information on the page, pp. 517-520 loose, with… Leer más

[4], 74 pp.First edition. Rare travelogue of Yemen, enriched with striking photographs. In Arabic and German parallel text. Prepared by Ahmed ibn Muhammad al-Garadi, the secretary, Arabic teacher and companion of the German explorer Hermann Burchardt (1857-1909), the book describes Burchardt’s travels in the south of the Arabian Peninsula, where he was ambushed and killed by gunmen in December 1909. Containing “important ethnographical information on crafts and the Jewish population”, the account also boasts a wealth of photographs “of great documentary value” (Speake), including city views and landmarks of Sanaa, Taizz, and Mocha, such as tower houses in Sanaa’s old town, the Ashrafiya Mosque, the Grand Mosque in Mocha, and the ruined palace of Sultan Hasan, as well as pictures of local children, a group of Jews studying scripture in the synagogue, several men sitting around a water pipe, bedouins, farmers, and workers. XIII, [3], 286, [2] pp.Third part of Freya Stark's (1893-1993) autobiography, in which she describes her life and especially her travels she undertook between 1933 and 1939. During this time, her first 4 works were published, starting with The Valley of the Assassins in 1934. The present work mostly focuses on Stark's travels in South Arabia and is illustrated with images of photographs she took herself. It is a very personal account of her life in general and travel experiences, alongside significant historical, political, geographical and anthropological information about the places she visited. This writing style was quite unique and unusual for her time, but since she was one of the first European travellers in parts of Southern Arabia "unique and unusual" were, in a positive way, accurate descriptors.Edge at the head of the book is green and the edge at the foot is untrimmed.
