Montpleasant, Ohio: Elisha Bates, 1825. The author was a prominent Friend or Quaker in Ohio during the 1820s and 1830s. Bates became the publisher of The Philanthropist, from 1818 to 1822. The Philanthropist was the first anti-slavery newspaper in the United States and also supported temperance and the fair treatment of Native Americans. Bates began publishing another periodical, The Moral Advocate, in March 1821. Bates also became the leader of the Mount Pleasant Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers.) Bates' only book, this volume, was self-published in 1825. Author Donald Good in his 1969 article "Elisha Bates and Social Reform" states that Bates' Doctrine of Friends was "judged to be one of the best brief accounts of Friends' view in existence." After the publication of his book, dramatic changes began to foment within the Quakers religion with what became known as the Hicksite - Orthodox Schism. Bookplate of Everett Paine, a founding member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, Massachusetts which was founded in 1888. Mr. Paine was the secretary there until 1906. New York: J. K. Wellman, 1846. Rare and highly collectible, contains one the first printings of Edgar Allan Poe's (listed as Edgar A. Poe in the table of contents) famous poem, The Raven (nevermore.) The last entry in the book is Poe's on pages 376-378. Other authors inlcude: John Greenleaf Whittier (John G. Whittier here) with The Ballad of Cassandra Southwick. Quarter leather (leather extended spine and corners) and black marbled (or rubbed) boards. 378 pages with mostly bright pages with tanned borders - pages in center tend to be bright with tanned boarders and some light foxing; endpapers are tanned. (Probably steelcut) black and white engravings. Front cover is detached (but present). Leather spine has gilt titles is rubbed and worn at head and heel. A highly desired volume, worth restoring. New York: Barricade Books, Inc., 1995. This book was effectively banned in Britain, after (then) Prince Charles (now King Charles III) obtained an injunction preventing its publication. The author had worked for years for the Royal Family whose employees are prevented by law from writing about their experiences. An American publisher accepted Berry's memoir about Charles and Diana's troubled marriage and the book was published in the United States. Prince Charles obtained an additional injunction preventing Berry from profiting from the book, and Berry basically spent five years on the run outside the United Kingdom and earned hundreds of thousands of dollars from the book. An explanatory page in the book details the publisher's process for going ahead with publication despite the legal issues. Moore is considered Ireland's national poet. He studied law at Middle Temple in London which is referred to on the title page. Text is in English and some Greek. Full leather binding, probably speckled calf. Disbound: front cover, fep and a blank page are detached. The detached blank page has some tears and soil. Cover has worn and bumped corners and some rubbing and scratching. Ex-library with bookplate on inside cover. Booksellers penciled notation on blank page follows. Name on title page. Stain at the top of frontispiece and title pages and to top margin of another engraving. Gilt decorations on spine are quite rubbed. 255 toned pages including index. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1923. Very rare 1923 First Edition 8vo size green clothbound hardcover, with gilt titles on spine and front cover; 266 deckle edged pages. Thomas Boyd (1898-1935) was a young United States Marine who served in France during World War I. After the war he became a journalist and later opened a bookstore in St. Paul, Minnesota. Other writers, including Sinclair Lewis, who came into his bookstore encouraged him to write about his own World War I experiences. Through the Wheat was Boyd's first novel. Protagonist William Hicks, like Boyd, is a young Marine serving in France. Submitted to Scribner's in 1922, Through the Wheat was rejected by editor Maxwell Perkins. According to prabook.com, "F. The first of five books in a series by the author "of sketches of village scenes and vividly drawn characters was based upon life in (the village of) Three Mile Cross" where she lived near Berkshire, England. Her Wikipedia biography describes "Her writing has all the charm of unaffected spontaneous humour, combined with quick wit and literary skill." Rubbed gray and brown marbled boards with leather corners and leather extended spine. Backstrip of spine is missing and has been replaced with paper strip with typed title which is peeling from front cover. Unique Handmade Ivory and Brass Cover on Rare 1901 Siddur (Jewish Prayerbook) Form of Prayers and Blessings of Israel with an English Translation published by the Hebrew Publishing Company, Brooklyn, New York Book opens right to left. 511 pages. 32mo: 4.75 by 3.5 inches in size and 1.75 inches thick. The original binding may have been green cloth which has been covered over. The first layer is a white or cream colored celluloid frame on the front and back covers with a brass frame. Teeny brass nails mark the midpoint of the frame closest to the spine on both front and back cover. A detailed brass clasp and peg to hold the volume closed are intact. The hinge and clasp are probably prefabricated pieces. The front cover was truly a labor of love with many layers of artistry. Working from the outside in: a brass frame then a celluloid border about a quarter of an inch all around. Then there is a very detailed frame of silver colored metal… Leer más

Disbound: both front and rear boards are detached and included. Front board and fep detached together. Pencilled price on fep. Limited, Numbered Salon edition, circa 1890. Number 107. With the exception of a few pages toward the front and back of the book, most pages are quite bright, white. There is some discoloration, my guess is it's due to cigar smoke rather than tanning. There is no smoke odor to the book. Darkened borders. We noted what may be finger smudges on the margins on several pages. Amazingly, detailed engravings in different tones: sepia, black, etc. throught. Multi-color frontispiece. Illustrations covered in tissue. Bright gilt top. London: J. Carpenter, 1803. The Odes of Anacreon translated into English verse with Notes by Thomas Moore, Esquire 12mo size, (2) two-volume three-quarter leather bound set with deckle edged pages. Maroon buckram centers the covers which are trimmed in leather at all corners and with an extended spine on both front and back cover. The leather is finished in a bright gilt border. Five raised bands decorate the spine. The raised bands are decorated in gilt dots. A plain gilt border decorates the very top and bottom of the spine. Just above the border on the bottom of the spines, and also in gilt, is "1803," the year this volume was published. The title, "Odes of Anacreon," also in gilt, appears between the first and second raised bands, and underneath each title, circled in gilt is the number 1 or 2, indicating which volume it is.
