London: Printed for A. Ward, J. and P. Knapton, T. Longman, S. Birt, C. Hitch, L. Gilliver, T. Astley, S. Austen, and J. Rivington, 1742. Third Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Third edition, with additions. ESTC T61185. Rebound in modern full leather with red spine label, gilt titles and rules, new end sheets. Ink gift note on front flyleaf ('The Gift of P. Jackson to Chas. Thomson') and several ink names (including Thomson's, and two that both appear to be Andersons, but are difficult to discern) on title page. Charles Thomson was an Irish-born patriot leader in revolutionary America, and secretary of the Continental Congress - in this capacity, his name and John Hancock's were the only two to appear on the first draft of the United States Declaration of Independence. Thomson was also an associate of Benjamin Franklin, and a member of Junto, the organization which later became the American Philosophical Society. An important work with an exciting provenance. S.N, 1912. Unbound. Very Good. 8x6x1. Nicely framed with paper backing over grey linen background. Inscribed 'To Mr. & Mrs. J.A. Hodgman with the best wishes of Theodore Roosevelt Aug 23d 1912.' This signature is dated several years after TR's tenure as U.S. President, and shortly after the Progressive National Convention which saw the formation of the Bull Moose Party. An attempt to assassinate Roosevelt was just two months in the future (he was shot and survived but, rather than seeking medical attention, proceeded to give a 90 minute speech). Some fading to photograph edges, minor wear to frame edges. 4 5/8 x 6 5/8. Frame is 7 7/8 x 11 7/8. Hardboard backer, wooden frame with black border accents.

London: Excudebat J.F. [James Flesher] pro Jona Hart, 1664. First Thus. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Rebound with new end sheets: brown leather spine, marbled paper over boards, red morocco spine label, gilt titles and rules. Binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. 1664 Hard Cover. [viii], 230 pp. Last text page misnumbered 216. Descartes's fundamental and originating work of the modern era in Western philosophy, bound together with a work by one of the Utrecht Cartesians, Lambert van Velthuysen. This is the first British printing of the Meditations, though it does not include Descartes's 'Objections and Replies' as many editions do. Velthuysen was connected by marriage to Descartes's friend Henry Regnier, and corresponded with scientists and philosophers such as von Leeuenhoek, Spinoza, and Leibniz. The work included here shows the influence of Thomas Hobbes - unsurprising, given that Velthuysen is credited with translating Leviathan into Dutch. John Locke may… Leer más

A Londres [Paris]: S.N, 1734. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Boards rubbed with some loss/drying of leather, corners exposed. 1734 Full-Leather. Complete in sixteen volumes. Full calf, morocco spine labels, gilt titles and tooled compartments. The life's work of the French historian and book collector who lived from the mid-16th to early 17th century. Originally published in Latin under the title Historia sui temporis, in 138 books, three years after the author's death. The work, despite controversy over some of its depictions of religious matters, quickly became regarded as a scholarly classic, characterized by exhaustive research and reference to the best available contemporary sources. It would not be translated satisfactorily into other languages for several decades. This was in part due to de Thou's own demand that the work not be translated into French, fearing 'great faults and errors against the intention of the author.' This edition was translated from a critical… Leer más

Descripción:
Providence: J.A. & R.A. Reid, Publishers, 1890. Reprint. Large Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 0x0x0. 1890 printing. Front and end matter foxed, some light spotting on front board, ink gift note on front endpaper. 102 pp. Grey cloth, gilt titles, black decorations on front board. A collection of engravings with commentary by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the noted utopian feminist and author of The Yellow Wallpaper. This was her first work, and is published under the name Mrs. Charles Walter Stetson, perhaps to leverage his reputation in the art world (Davis, Charlotte Gilman: A Biography). Stetson was her first husband, to whom she was married for only four years. She would later take the name of her second husband, Houghton Gilman. Charlotte's art training at the Rhode Island School of Design and her progressive opinions regarding the place of women in society are both evident in this work.
