Descripción:
This is the first edition of Volume II of the 1781 publication of The Life and Sermons of Bishop Thomas Wilson. The first volume for the most part included The Life. This Volume II includes the sermons including the funeral service presentation for Thomas Wilson given by Rev. Philip Moore, Rector of Kirk Bride, titled "Sermon C." It was supplied in March 1755 to one of the Bishop's sons who with his brother for 25 years directed assembling the contents.
The oversized volumes were published in leather-covered boards. The front cover of this copy has been lost and a cloth-covered replacement, now loose, was fitted for it. An attempt to reaffix the cover has failed. The title page remains (is protected in plastic), but the fly pages are missing. The contents page contains an owner's name, date, & place of purchase in Oxford. The volume begins with "contents" and is complete to page 639 and the concluding fly pages. The binding and back cover are strongly affixed; they contain scuffs, abrasion, bumped and… Leer más

Descripción:
This First Edition of 10 volumes collects the history lectures of John Lord (1810-1894). He was a popular public lecturer in the US and England from 1840 to 1866. At Dartmouth College he was a history lecturer from 1866 to 1876. In 1881 he began preparing his lectures for publication in a multivolume set. The volumes appeared individually from 1883 to 1885 and in 1896 appeared in a 5-volume set. Three new volumes appeared between 1886 and 1894, the year of Lord's death. A final volume appeared posthumously in 1897, which included "The Life of John Lord." These 10 volumes first appeared as a set in 1897. John Lord said he was "not technically a scholar." He had been an apt college student and had studied for the clergy but found his calling was not to the pulpit but the lectern where he could share his passion for history. Commenting on himself later in life, he said, "My talent, what I have, is in compression, generalization, felicity of style, criticism, and a way of putting things." His ability was… Leer más

Descripción:
Martha Munger Purdy Black (1866-1957) led a long and interesting life. In 1898, she joined the Klondike Gold Rush and set out for the Yukon from Chicago with her husband, brother, and cousin. In Seattle, her husband decided to go to Hawaii and told Martha she could either go with him or go home. Her position was "nothing doing" and continued on to the Klondike, climbing the Chilkoot Pass and navigating 600 miles of Yukon River to Dawson City while pregnant. Her life in the Yukon led through various adventures (giving birth in a gold-mining camp, operating a sawmill) to marrying the Commissioner for Yukon and supporting Yukon Territory troops in England during WWI. Her husband served in Parliament representing Yukon, and when he fell ill, she took his place for a term, duly elected. The cloth cover has a few tiny white spots, and one bottom board is worn. The binding in tight. The dust jacket in protective plastic is whole except for spine wear and shards out of the top and bottom. Prices elsewhere for… Leer más

Descripción:
O.H.P. (Oliver Hazard Perry) LaFarge was the 3rd child of 8 of John LaFarge, a highly successful artist in stained glass. O.H.P. moved through various job situations after a good basic education, always having to leave jobs for reasons of health. Advised by doctors to go West for his health, likely with the help of his wealthy father, he and two others joined the Klondike Gold Rush in the winter of 1898. O.H.P. spent until 1899 in Dawson City, returning in that year to team up with a companion from the Klondike in Seattle to form the real estate and insurance firm of Bond and LaFarge. O.H.P. prospered, grew his Seattle business, became an architect and erected buildings there. During his Seattle years, he developed chapters for what he called a "little book" about his journey to and sojourn in the Klondike, but the draft did not advance to publication. That was left to his daughter Margaret LaFarge Hamill, who published it privately in a tight little hardbound volume. Included are other… Leer más

Descripción:
Wilson Mizner (1876-1933) was the greatest bon vivant, ladies' man, gambler, writer, promoter, manager, and all-around outlaw of the late 19th & early 20th Centuries, according to Mizner. About authorship of the book, a New York Times reviewer wrote in 1935 that "[A]lthough Edward Dean Sullivan is down as the author of it, its greater and better parts are the work of Mizner himself. The book is really Mizner's autobiography, filled out in spots by Mr. Sullivan." With regard to evaluation, the reviewer wrote that "the book is extraordinarily racy, and highly entertaining."
Currently, copies of this first edition found online are priced at $65, $80, $200, $249, $250 & $259.50 (this one a signed 2nd printing). The condition of these volumes is described as "good" except the one for $250 which appears to be better and includes a dust jacket.
This copy for sale has been repaired along its spine, and while the cloth cover is faded (particularly the spine) and the back cover has a dark spot, the edges are… Leer más

Descripción:
Pierre Loti's book was first published in French in a lavishly bound and color-illustrated volume in 1878. Translation into English by Laura Ensor seems to have appeared in 1897. Subsequent printings are very hard to date as the book was translated into every European language and reprinted during the author's lifetime 222 times. Binding varied, but the many dozens of Rossi and Myrbach designs appear to have been retained. One English-language copy with the same cover as this copy for sale is signed but undated and sells for $1,995. The first owner of this copy for sale dated possession 1913. The cloth cover is in good condition except for the hinges of the spine, which are worn. The corners are not bumped but show wear; the edges, however, show only slight wear. A second owner's stamp appears on the front fly leaf & rear inside cover. Some penciling of unknown origin also appears there. The pages are complete, untorn, and unmarked. Some are lightly age stained but free of foxing. This collectible… Leer más

Descripción:
This 1856 edition (of the 1850 first edition) shows wear on its cloth cover at the corners and at the top and bottom of the spine. The embossing on its spine is faded. The binding is tight, and the gilt edging of the outer papers (top, side, bottom) is bright (photo doesn't catch it). A few pages show moderate foxing, but very light to no foxing predominates. What appears to be a light water stain occurs at the bottoms of the first and last pages. An owner's name (presented by her father, July 1860) appears on the front fly page.
Editions found include: 1850 first edition ($100 & $185, no photos), 1851 ex-library ($73, no photos), 1853 ($22, no photos), 1857 ($75, $95, & $100; photos of cover only show heavy wear and fading), 1868 ($78, no photos). Reprints sell for from $25 to $35 to $40, to $64.
This collectible 1856 edition is in overall above-average condition inside and out.

Descripción:
Since its publication in 1790, this work has appeared in one and two-volume editions and then in reprints from the 1920s on. In the 21st century, several reprint editions are available.
This 1825 volume for sale is Vol I of II. It is in very good condition. The boards are covered in tooled calfskin. Wear appears on its spine hinges, which are strong, and the edges all around show wear with mild corner bumps. The leather has a few nicks, and the title on the spine ("Alison's Essays") is faint as are the other tooled designs there. The inner boards and fly papers are marbled. A nameplate is affixed to the front inner board, and a subsequent owner's name is penned there. The content pages are unmarked, without tears, and remarkably clear of foxing.
The 1790 first editions are priced at from $97 for a copy in poor condition to copies in better condition from $250 to $355 to $1,158. An 1825 6th edition ex-library in two volumes in fair condition, with torn binding and heavy foxing, sells for $132 while an… Leer más

Descripción:
Stitch binding is remarkably tight. Gilt-edge pages. Pages complete, with no foxing or age discoloration. Illustrations: 78 clear, some page-sized. Map fold-out: 1 in color. Lt. Schwatka and his team navigated the Yukon River in 1883, wrote an extensive military report, and enhanced the work in an 1885 first edition. With the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897, the book was hurriedly reprinted "Together with the Latest Information on the Klondike Country." Contains first owner's name and date of July 29, 1899. This volume appears to have been a deluxe edition by way of fancily embossed cover, gilt-edged pages, high-quality paper, and marbled fly pages. Reprints are available but hardly could equal the quality and clarity of the print and all of the many illustrations. This book was carefully used for years in research work and now hopes for a new good home.

Calif-skin-covered boards, 1 reattached, edge-and-shelf worn, rubbed and stained. Former library book. Title on spine marred. Stitch binding tight. Pages complete (none folded or torn). Foxing throughout but all pages remain readable. Illustrations: numerous throughout. Maps: 2 are referenced in Preface, presumably foldouts; none is attached. Some maps are on print pages. This 1839 edition appears to be the third. The first was in 1837 and the second in 1838. This 184-year-old book has served as an interesting reference. It now looks for a good new home. An antiquarian book still useful for reference.

Leather-covered boards, embossed with gold-lettered title: "The Klondike Gold Fields." The edge-worn covers have been reattached; no spine. 2.5 pounds. When the Klondike Gold Rush became known to the outside world in July 1897, the news created a huge demand for information, so this first edition designed for gold seekers had several printings in various cities (Chicago, Philadelphia, & some unknown.) Some covers were embossed leather and some were cloth with varying illustrations. The contents in all cases appear to have been exactly the same. In this first edition, the binding of all pages is tight. Slight foxing and age discoloration occasionally appear throughout. Two fold-out maps intact; tear in largest map repaired. Contains 31 period photographs and engravings. The difference between this first edition and those priced up to $500 is the cover; the quality of the stitch binding and quality of the print on the pages within is the same—near fine.

This is a hardbound reprint of the 1936 edition. Surprisingly, this Gun Room Press hardback edition (undated) sells for prices listed elsewhere ranging from one at $25 to others from $141 to $355--and ranging on Biblio from $25 to $185. It is a quality reprint with a complete, untorn dc. BONUS: at no additional cost: Sixguns by Keith: The Standard Reference Work (Wolfe Publishing, Prescott, 19??). ISBN: 1879356090. Elmer Keith, softbound, 8½X11X¾ Weight: 32.4 ounces. Pages: 308 Illustrations: 100+. This is a quality reprint of the Stackpole & Heck 1955 edition. The many halftones are well-defined, unlike the unfortunate 2012 reprint edition with its uniformly hazy images. These are TWO near-fine, quality reprints priced well under-market.

Descripción:
This handsome, oversized, well-laid-out book presents the history of the Alaska Native Sisterhood and short biographies of many of the activist members of the Sisterhood's Camp 2. The biographies are assembled by Editor Kim Metcalfe, many of which come from interviews she conducted for the local PBS radio station, KTOO FM. Included are chapters that treat historical and cultural developments. The members appear in photographs and in historical photographs from earlier years in Juneau, Alaska. Additionally, included are fine historical photographs of the "Indian Village" from the turn-of-the century and on over the years. As an assemblage of Alaska Native and Tlingit history in Southeast Alaska, the impressive book is a significant and comprehensive accomplishment. Bibliography and comprehensive index. Printed on quality gloss bookpaper. Weight: 2½ pounds. One owner, very slightly shelf-worn—like new. Available new for $55 with some used copies selling for much higher. Descripción:
THE WEST for Mollie Walsh was a promised land of hopes and dreams. It was the same for her parents when they escaped from Ireland's famine in the late 1840s to Scotland and then came west to New York in 1864 and on to Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota. At age 21 in 1890, Mollie ventured further West on her own. After seven years in the Treasure State of Montana, in 1897 she joined the Klondike Gold Rush. This new land promised greater opportunity for an independent, fulfilling life. After encountering and overcoming numerous challenges, she reached the Klondike in 1898 and partnered well in business and then marriage, but by 1901 she fled the Yukon in a bold attempt to save her family's diminishing fortunes. A year later at age 33, in facing an ever-mounting challenge, she died a violent death.
Thirty-two years after the great Klondike Gold Rush, a White Pass packer who had known Mollie Walsh gave her to posterity in a bronze bust. In the inscription for the monument, erected in 1931, her admirer wrote,… Leer más

Descripción:
Pierre Berton (1920-2004) was a journalist, newspaper editor, WW2 officer, Korean War correspondent, TV host, and author of 50 books. Among these are his popular, spirited accounts of the Klondike Gold Rush. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary in 1997 of the Gold Rush that began in 1897 is the Anniversary Edition of his 1983 photo essay. In a statement at the head of this special edition, Burton wrote, "This classic work, republished for the Klondike anniversary year, tells the story not only of man's search for treasure, but most importantly of man's search for himself."
This scarce collectible is in like new condition with but small signs of use on the dust jack. The 175 historical photos in their oversized format give the many well-known historical images a newness of detail, perspective, and understanding. Many lesser-known historical photographs are also part of the collection.

Descripción:
This volume contains 29 papers presented at an Anchorage conference in August 1991 on the 255th anniversary of the Bering-Chirikov expedition. During the conference, news came that the graves of several of Bering's crew had been discovered on Bering Island; preliminary findings of the exhumations are included. Also included are maps, charts, statistics, and an index. Availability of this anthology is narrow with prices ranging from $56 to $170. Other than bearing a light, age-related stain on the cover and shelf wear, the 456 pages of contents are "like new."
