Entire set, beginning with Volume I, No. 1, April 7, 1938, and including all Hemingway issues, though Volume III, No. 1, January 12, 1939, 14 issues total, each in original wraps, light general wear-only at all issues, a very clean, bright set overall, with no mailing labels obscuring the front covers except the final issue, which also has damp-stains noted at first and final few pages at the margins, and which has the wraps separating a few inches at spine ends; a few issues have a vertical crease at front wrap, apparently from being folded and mailed. A complete gathering of the 14 issues of Ken with the dispatches sent by the American author and adventurer from war torn Spain, including Volume I, No. 4, May 19, 1938, with the lone fiction contribution -- the short-story, The Old Man at the Bridge. Four-line signed inscription at front fly of book, "For Don DeVoss / from his friend / Margaret Mitchell / August 12th, 1944." Unknown provenance, but we do know the author was very active during WWII, including writing letters, offering humor and encouragement, and sympathy, to enlisted men. We also know from many examples of her signature that she used a more formal, controlled hand -- including the capital E's in both words of her name -- for certain things, such as signing copies of Gone With The Wind, and a less formal, more free-form signature for other things, such as personal letters. We have seem numerous examples of both from various MM archives. We have been unable to determine the identity of the recipient. Entire issue, December, 1866, in original wraps, very light general wear-only, overall very clean and bright, with untrimmed edges, and a few tiny faded blue ink splashes near bottom edge. The author's first appearance in a national magazine, published before his first book, and after his story The Jumping Frog of Calavares County appeared in a NY newspaper, The Saturday Press, in 1865. In the single issue of Harper's, Twain was not credited, but he is noted as "Mark Swain" in the contents page that accompanies bound volumes. This item is most often found in bound volumes; this is the original, single issue, in unusually nice shape..

Entire issue, May 29, 1902, newspaper style, light general wear-only, horizontal mailing crease all but gone, no tears or chips, no mailing label, small rust spots and holes at spine from staples, which have been neatly removed, leaving issue fully intact, but not attached, a very good copy overall, This is the first appearance of this story that was published later in Century Magazine, 1908, in a different version with significant changes. In this earlier version, the man survives but with frostbite and a better understanding of the impersonal, unsympathetic attitude of the natural world toward mankind. The later version is widely known as among the author's most technically masterful and popular stories. A very scarce, important item in the London canon.

Entire issue, Volume 18, Number 7, May 2, 1931, in original printed wraps, generally bright and clean with very light wear-only, and a bit of dust soiling at top and fore edge. In 1931, while yet a senior at West Seattle High School, Seattle, Washington, the author -- who would go on to fame, and tragedy, in Hollywood and the theater -- entered and won $100 from The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, a writing contest for high school students sponsored by Scholastic Magazine, with the present, controversial essay. Entire issues, February 13, 20 & 27, and March 6, 1954, each in original colorful, pictorial wraps, the fourth of which shows a seated Hemingway in the bush, gun in hand, aside a downed leopard, all issues light general wear-only, pages of some issues are discretely pulled loose from the staples; February 27th issue wrinkled a bit at top and bottom outer corners, and separated about 1.5-inches at top spine edges. Articles are illustrated with 23 photographs by Theisen, several of which are in color.
