Housed in a red leather entry slipcase. Folding maps in red and black at rear of each volume. Fine. Pages lightly tanned. Tolkien's epic trilogy is considered one of the greatest fantasy works ever written and is among the best-selling books of all time. Topaz, UT: The Topaz Times, 1945. Four hundred issues of The Topaz Times; 197 of which are in English and 203 in Japanese; with 47 fragments of various issues, 17 illustrated calendars, and nine pieces of ephemera including high school newspapers from Topaz War Relocation Center, Ram-bler and Topazette. Following two Pre-Issues from September of 1942, the run spans from Vol. II #49 (February 27, 1943) to Vol. X #19 (March 6, 1945). The newspaper was issued with varying frequency, from daily to weekly or less. Illustrated with drawings, many of which are cartoons. Each issue from 2 to 10 pages or so, generally printed on both sides of mimeographed sheets measuring about 36.5 x 22.5 cm (14¼" x 8 ¾"). Stitched together into monthly groups, or fascicles, with string through small holes in the top margins. London: John Lane the Bodley Head, 1937. First Edition Thus. Near Fine. An exceedingly scarce presentation copy of the first English edition printed in England, limited issue signed by James Joyce. One of 100 copies (from a total edition of 1000 copies, this copy unnumbered) printed on mould-made paper and bound in full calf vellum. This copy was reserved for presentation by the author, unnumbered at the colophon with the words "Presentation Copy" inscribed in calligraphy below the limitation. The only other copy of this edition of 100 that we could locate that bears the presentation inscription (this copy also unnumbered) was from Joyce's private library now housed in the Poetry Collection at the University at Buffalo. They also hold two other copies of the Bodley Head Ulysses (1/900) that also bear the words "Presentation Copy" on the edition statement: one having been owned by Joyce and the other by Sylvia Beach. A substantial archive of over 300 individual documents, plus a few duplicates, relating to Japanese internment during WWII, forming a very thorough view of the federal agency that directed their imprisonment, The War Relocation Authority. Such a sizeable collection of WRA documents is extremely rare in commerce. All the major facets of the dark, disturbing episode of Japanese internment are represented in this archive: its basic legal and historical outlines, the WRA's publicity and propaganda and its reception in the US, the WRA's groundbreaking use of social sciences in service of repressive American policies, life and death in the camps, and the ending of internment. The essential history of internment can be said to begin with Franklin D. Roosevelt's Executive Order 9102 establishing the War Relocation Authority, included in mimeograph format. A preeminent association and presentation copy of this cornerstone of the Harlem Renaissance signed by three of its contributors, Harlem Renaissance heavy-weights and NAACP leadership W. E. B. Du Bois, James Weldon Johnson and inscribed by Walter White on the half-title page to one of the foremost defense attorneys of the twentieth century Clarence Darrow. While all three signers are considered major figures in the Harlem Renaissance, Du Bois is also seen as a luminary, forefather and mentor to the movement. Additionally to Johnson and Du Bois' signatures, Walter White, who was then serving as the NAACP's assistant-secretary, has inscribed this copy "For Clarence Darrow with the warmest regard and affection of Walter White / New York / 10 December 1925". Number 25 of 200 copies with limited issue asbestos binding, hand numbered and signed by Ray Bradbury on the colophon. Approximately 50 copies of which were sold in trade dust jackets though not called for, and this is one of those copies. [viii], 199, (3) pp. Johns-Manville Quinterra asbestos binding, lettered in red. Fine, with light ambient toning to the boards, light offsetting to the front free endpaper and contents lightly tanned. In a Fine dust jacket, with absolutely no fading (we have never seen one without fading); two micro-tears to the edge, a minuscule crease to the top corner of the rear panel and trivial rubbing at the folds. Near Fine with light edge wear, light wear to spine ends with a closed tear roughly one-inch from the base (though suggesting no restoration), toning to spine and the usual browning to the endsheets. Housed in a custom cloth chemise case with morroco title label stamped in gilt. Hemingway's scarce second published book, and his first of short fiction. Though intended to be published in an edition of 300 copies, due to a printing error only 170 were released and originally sold through Sylvia Beach's literary juggernaut of a bookshop, Shakespeare & Company.

Germantown, PA: Printed by Christopher Sower, 1759. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition of this scarce and important colonial-era antislavery pamphlet, and one of the earliest antislavery tracts to be printed in America. 8vo. [ii], 15 pp. Stitched in contemporary plain waste paper wrapper. From the library of James Moon, a prominent Philadelphia Quaker who played a leading role in the long-running Quaker campaign against slavery in the 18th Century. Moon's ownership signature dated 1760 inked on the inside of the front wrapper, the inside of the back wrap, and the title leaf verso. Short-title in manuscript presumably in Moon's hand on the front wrap, and an additional early, small ownership signature there as well ("JHM", possibly another Moon). Near Fine. Some worming, rubbing and fraying to the edges of wraps, the top third of the wrapper is split along spine. Wilde's masterpiece, which opened to wide acclaim at the St. James's Theatre, London, on February 14, 1895. A fantastic collection of sixteen first editions, all signed by Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez and all inscribed by him to the same recipient, Richard Mattie. A painstaking exercise in book collecting, undertaken by the resourceful Mattie over a period spanning from 1997 to 2005 with the assistance of a number of contacts in Mexico who had a close connection to the author by which the signatures were obtained. The collection is accompanied by a 1-inch thick folder, titled by Mattie "The Gabriel Garcia Marquez File 1997-2005", in which he has meticulously documented this nearly decade-long collecting venture, preserving every letter, fax, postal receipt, wire and emails (printed out in full).
