An outstanding study of William Clarke Quantrill and the famous "Border Wars" in Kansas and Missouri in the 1860's. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Quantrill joined the Confederacy. Preferring guerilla tactics, he organized his own gang of southern sympathizers.Very Good condition. 1st Edition. Red cloth binding, text and image in gilt on the cover. Title, author, and publisher in worn gilt on the spine. Cover has a spot on the front and light rubbing on the back. Light edge and corner wear. Pages are lightly tanned and edges are untrimmed. I think there were 2-4 pages that had a stain, but I couldn't find them again, there may be more - but the book is mostly clean and tight. Binding is good. "On March 7 and I, 1962, the Battle of Pea Ridge was fought in northwest Arkansas. During this two-day battle the Confederates, under General Earl Van Dorn, attacked the rear of the Union army commanded by General Samuel Curtis. By the end of the first day the rebels had lost tow key commanders, brigadier generals Benjamin McCulloch and James M. McIntosh. This then brought about the collapse of the Confederate effort on their right wing, leaving only a wounded General Sterling Price to finish the battle on the left the following day." Fine condition. Fair condition. The covers are a kind of "rust" color - a cross between brown and red. Cloth over boards and have ablack and gold decorative design and text on both the front and spine. There is much edge and corner wear specially around the spine. The spine is also a little faded and had a bumped area. The closed book page edges have some soiling and the bottom has a black area that did not easily wipe off. At both front and back the brittle brown end papers have cracked. Includes newspaper clipping with a photo of the author and a story about his recovery from a dangerous illness. Good condition for a book of its age. The cover has a strip of embossed flowers and the title which was originally gold gilt, but not too much of that is left. There is some edge and corner wear and some spotting. The spine is soiled or has darkened. There is a light pencil note on the front end paper. The top closed book page edges are darker with some soiling/spotting. The inside pages are clean with probably light tanning. The binding is tight for the most part. The area where the clipping was stored has been slightly darkened by the clipping. Beautiful book in Near Fine condition. I chose that rating as I believe that it has a scratch on the front cover; however, it blends in so well with the leather texture that it is not obvious. This is a beautiful book with Gold gilt on the front and spine. No edge or corner wear. All page edges of the book have been tinted a pretty yellow color. No entry in the "Presented To" page. The book is clean and tight throughout. It would make a beautiful gift.
