Publisher's black cloth lettered in white, professionally rebacked preserving original spine, corners neatly restored. An extraordinary copy of this book, the best imaginable. From the library of Harry Houdini (twice signed) with numerous annotations by him. Inscribed by Houdini on the front pastedown, "I bought this book in Melbourne Australia March 1910 (I paid 12/6 ($3.00) for it Harry Houdini." (The book contains the ticket of the Australian bookseller E. W. Cole.). Beneath the inscription is mounted a photograph of Houdini's custom-made French Voisin biplane in flight in Australia. He has also signed the title-page, "Harry Handcuff Houdini Melbourne Australia March 1910," and the book contains both his and Beatrice Houdini's bookplates. Houdini clearly read the book carefully. Pagination: [viii], 32pp., title, + 34 leaves of plates, and 2 leaves of manuscript indices in German, comprising registers based on Bode’s Uranographie and dated 1801, bound in at end. Signatures: *(4), a-e(4), A-D(4). Letterpress title page and text within twice-ruled borders. 34 hand-colored copperplate engravings and pictorial title page (group of putti surrounding globe at base of column) inscribed “Die Gestirne” signed by “D. Berger Sculpt. 1782,” (i.e. Daniel Berger (1744–1825), all finely colored in a contemporaryhand for the major star constellations and groups. Bode’s plates have been celebrated for their accuracy and as elegantly rendered depictions of the zodiacal beasts, constellations, and other celestial bodies. Monaco: Éditions du Rocher, 1962. First Edition. Paperback. Near Fine. Inscribed and signed by Cocteau for editor Jean Denoël with a drawing at the front, and signed by Picasso and Cocteau on the colophon. Among a number of copies on Rives reserved for collaborators, from a total edition of 255. 24 original lithographs (11 of them hors-texte, including the front wrapper) and 2 double-page, by Picasso, printed in black by Mourlot. Folio, contents loose as issued in original wrappers with cut-out design revealing title on front cover; 1/4 calf gilt-backed chemise and board slipcase (split). Contents are fine. Prospectus laid in. "On the occasion of Picasso's 80th birthday, Pierre Bertrand, who was Cocteau's publisher, assembled eleven of the poet's texts which reflected his friendship with Picasso. The latter illustrated these texts with 24 lithographs, some of which are drawn in Cocteau-esque style "---Cramer 117; Monod 292; Bloch 1037-1060.

London: Chatto and Windus, 1933. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good+. Original blue cloth, gilt-stamped lettering on spine. Inscribed by Faulkner on the title-page, to Else, Faulkner's liaison when he visited Stockholm to collect the Nobel prize. Book is fine, in a very nice example of the scarce dustwrapper (price-clipped, scuffed along the edges). Faulkner met Else Jonsson (1912-1996) when he visited Stockholm in December 1950 to receive the Nobel Prize. Else was the widow of journalist Thorsten Jonsson (1910–1950), reporter for "Dagens Nyheter" in New York from 1943 to 1946, who had interviewed Faulkner in 1946 and introduced his works to Swedish readers. At the banquet in 1950 where Faulkner and Else met, publisher Tor Bonnier referred to Else as widow of the man responsible for Faulkner being awarded the prize. They had an affair that lasted until the end of 1953.

A compilation of 73 brightly colored watercolors, many with manuscript captions in German, some are dated for the costume, all clipped and mounted into book, and illustrating the costumes and attributions of court officials, knights (Templar), Tartar costume, St. George on horseback, German orders of nobility, also for Spain, France, Holland, Italian, Turkish, Egypt and Babylon, and other various orders (as in Order of the Garter, in England and France) and religious dress of ordained and lay members of various orders including German, Italian, Spanish and Cistercian, Carmelite, Carthusian, Capuchin and Franciscan monks. Also, Jesuit pilgrims and sisters of the Benedictine, Sylvestrine and Cistercian, among other lesser-known orders and historical figures such as Leopold III of Austria and Louis III of Tremoilles. Edited by Ludovicus Mondellus (Luigi Mondella). Preface addressed to Octavianus Ubaldinus, Prince of Mercatello. Capital spaces with guide letters. Early floreate blindstamped paneled calf over thick wooden boards; (hinges splitting and parts of spine perished at head and tail, some worming to boards and leather, internal light browning, some thumbsoiling at front, and few minor wormholes, all in all, a wonderful medieval survival). This copy with contemporary scattered marginalia and Latin and Italian inscriptions, heavy at the beginning and end, some names come through “Pietropaolo Porcella” and other bibliographic notes (title repeated at least three times). Frankfurt: A. Kempner, 1612. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio. Contemporary leather (recently rebacked) with armorial stamp to front and rear board. One of the high spots of 17th century botany. Sweert originally issued this work as a sale catalogue for his botanical specimens for the Frankfurt fair of 1612. There were six editions of the work published between 1612 and 1647. This copy has 109 of the 110 plates, lacking plate 23, as well as the portrait. Some marginal repairs and worming; a few plates browned, but overall, quite decent impressions. Text in Latin, Dutch, German and French.

Very Good+. Album of 21 pen-and-ink portraits on laid paper after illustrations to Aliprando Capriolo's 1596 Ritratti di Cento Capitani Illustri. Approximately 185 x 143 mm each, tipped to larger sheets of wove paper. Small folio, [Italy: n.d., ca, 18th century]. Cased in full 18th-century Italian (Neapolitan?) brown calf over pasteboard, tooled in gold all-over, covers with two outer border rolls surrounding three double-ruled panels filled with rolls and solid tools decorated with silver paint (now mostly oxidized), inner panel with tulip tools at corner surrounding cartouche of gouges with center lozenge of floral tools, spine with raised bands in seven compartments with cherub tool, rebacked preserving original spine, later endpapers and edge gilding. Folio, 442x330 mm, contemporary 1/4 vellum, spine darkened, chipped at top, with horizontal crack across bottom; front free endpaper loose. 26 (of 30) engraved plates by Pieter Nolpe after Post; four plates 18-21 have been replaced with remarkably skillfull pen-and-ink facsimiles, each signed "Joh. Luiscius v. Essen inv. & fec. 1768" on paper watermarked "C & I Honig." Exceedingly rare first edition of a collection of plates depicting the funeral procession of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange. Although some might see the missing plates as a serious detraction, the replacement of them with facsimiles by an accomplished Dutch artist just over 100 years later makes this an even more interesting piece.

Vellum a little soiled and scuffed; some faint foxing throughout, though middle portion of text block is remarkably bright and clean; expert repair to bottom margin of first double-pate plate (title-p.), otherwise prelims and terminals just a little wrinkled along the edges, or occasionally cut close. Contemporary full straight-grained red morocco, with gilt-stamped lettering and ornament in spine compartments (expertly rebacked, with original backstrip laid down), ornate gilt-stamped borders; folio; with 110 hand-colored aquatint plates. Edges of boards a bit scuffed; small circular stain on front board; minor off-setting from plates. Second, large-paper edition. Identical to the 1819 edition published by H. R. Young in six points, but has imprint of Howlett and Brimmer on title-page verso. The vibrant illustrations depict all manner of hunting sports, including big game hunting, whaling, fishing, birding, and bull fighting in North America, Germany, Lapland, Spain, Russia, and Africa. Full chestnut morocco, boards and spine ornately stamped in gilt and blind, including "Grevedon" in blind, and "F.H." in gilt, on upper board; oblong 8vo (305x235mm); contains 21 original pencil drawings, each about 90x140mm, mounted to the recto only, one per leaf. Undated, but likely drawn in the late-18th or early-19th century (tho they could be as late as mid-19th); a pencilled notation on the FFEP indicates that the artist is Pierre-Louis Henri Grevedon, and the drawings collected by Franklin De Haven. Just a little light wear to binding; internally very clean, with the small leather ex-libris of American collector Robert Hoe. Grevedon (1776-1860) was known for his beautiful portraits of young women, and these bust-length portraits are no exception; showing all sorts of women, some plainly dressed (perhaps a maid), and others in more extravagant costume (coiffure, headdress), including a bride. Small 4to (171 x 123 mm). 94 woodcut illustrations after Holbein, some cut by Hans Lützelburger, each approx. 60 by 89 mm, with Latin text above and French quatrains below. Woodcut device on title and a larger version on last leaf. Handsome light brown blind tooled Morocco by Bernard Middleton. Second edition of the icones and first complete edition containing 94 woodcuts, including the additional subjects in Kings XII and Isaiah I. "The first [edition] to contain the complete set of ninety-four blocks and the French verse text. The word "instrumenti" in the title of the 1538 edition has been changed here to "testamenti." To Frellon's preface are added Nicolas Bourbon's verse address to the reader and distich naming Holbein as the artist of the set of woodcuts, and a verse preface and postscript by Gilles Corrozet" (Mortimer/Harvard French, 278); Brunet III:252.

[144], 740pp., [2], 512, 480, [16]pp. Additional engraved title of architectural motif with heraldry of Saxe-Gotha-Altenberg and the flanking figures of Moses and Christ, with their attributes in niches below, signed by J. C. Clausener. Illustrated with 45 plates (including title), most of them full-page (few double-page) engravings depicting biblical scenes and prophet portraits, as well as some double-page maps and plans (temples and Holy Land maps), most illustrations also signed by Clausener. With the rare double-page engraving in rear showing royalty and court members in a large reception hall (Bischöffliche oder Fürstliche Saal) during the “Confessio” which took place in Augsburg in 1530 under Charles V.
