Washington, 1849. Very good. Lithograph map in seven sections, with each sheet measuring approximately 15.5 x 25 inches. Not bound. Second issue of this monumental and important map of the Oregon Trail, described by Wheat as "a road guide for Oregon emigrants such as had never previously existed." The second issue is nearly identical to the first (which appeared in 1846), but the lithographer's name has been omitted and the numbering of sheets III and VI is reversed. An exceptionally clean set, with no splits or repairs, and almost none of the toning often seen along the folds. Charles Preuss was a Prussian-born surveyor and cartographer who accompanied John C. Fremont on three of his five exploratory expeditions in the American West. His first great map, illustrating Fremont's explorations of 1842 to the Rocky Mountains and of 1843-44 to Oregon and California, was published in 1845. An abridged translation of the Russian edition of 1755, which offered "The first reliable descriptions of Kamchatka, based on the observations of the author and his companions during the Russian expedition to the far north, 1734-43, a part of Bering's Great Northern Expedition" (Arctic Bib. 9264, 9265). It describes the customs, morals, religion, and languages of the inhabitants of the Kamchatkan peninsula. New York: Great American Tea Company, 1886. Near fine. Original chromolithograph advertising poster, 22 x 32 inches. A stunning print with exceptionally rich color, archivally backed. Professional restoration to edges and a few small spots on the printed area. Near fine. "Ten minutes for refreshments!" was the well-known cry of railroad conductors across the United States before dining cars became common on trains. Hungry and thirsty passengers would rush off the train and into the depot, where they scrambled to order and then bolt down their lunch under the watchful eye of conductor determined to keep the train on schedule. In this advertising print for the Great American Tea Company, the conductor stands in the doorway with pocket watch in hand, calming observing the chaos as customers (all white men served by Black waiters) frantically consume their food and beverages, some leaving smashed crockery in their wake as they rush to re-board the train. Contemporary calf boards (rubbed through at corners), rebacked with new spine, original marbled endpapers retained. Armorial bookplate of John Bridge on front pastedown, Bridge's name and 1827 date written at head of title page, along with "This book belonged to H.R.H. the Duke of York." We believe this is the John Bridge of the firm Rundell and Bridge, jewelers to the royal family. A few plates and one chart with foxing, but overall a very clean copy. Hill 117: "Dixon's voyage is important as a supplement to Captain Cook and for its contributions to the natural history of the Pacific Northwest. Hardcover. Very good. Black leather album containing 54 tissue-guarded leaves of watercolor paper, of which 43 have been used. 10 x 12 inches, stamped in gilt on the front "Sketches on the Nile / Alan Hinch / 1938." Leather scuffed, cloth tape reinforcement to inner hinges, all else very good. Alan Hinch was born in England c. 1881, but was living in the United States by 1920, when the federal census documents him working in Miami as pilot of a private yacht owned by socialite James Deering, an executive in International Harvester Company. He apparently embarked on this Nile cruise as companion to his next employer, Richard Flint Howe (1863-1943), another International Harvester executive who had married James Deering's sister, Abby. Passenger manifests show Hinch as traveling in the company of a "Mr. R. Howe," and the census of 1940 lists him as butler on Howe's estate. Two volumes, uniformly bound in three-quarter leather and marbled boards, housed in a custom cloth slipcase and chemise. Complete with two engraved maps (one linen-backed and folding), frontispiece and two additional plates in each volume, as well as illustrations in the text. Text and plates very clean. Wagner-Camp (108:2): "Commerce of the Prairies is regarded as one of the classic accounts of the trans-Mississippi West....Wheat calls its map, 'a cartographic landmark...an outstanding achievement.' Born in Tennessee, Josiah Gregg set out for Santa Fe in 1831 to recover his health, and afterward he became an active trader on the Santa Fe Trail for the next decade." Three volumes, limited large paper edition, number 53 of 150 sets printed on handmade paper, illustrated with frontispiece portrait and seven maps (six in pocket at rear of Volume III). Original white cloth spines and paper-covered boards. Edgewear, typical light toning and soiling to spine cloth, internally sound and clean, partially unopened. Unique to this set is the addition of a four-page pamphlet bound in after the title page in Volume I, titled "Report of the Committee Appointed the Twenty Second Ultimo to Inquire into if any, and what Compensation Ought to be Made to Captain Pike and His Companion, for their Services in Exploring the Mississippi River, and in their Expedition to the Sources of the Osage, Arkensaw, and La Plate Rivers, Together with their Tour Through New Spain" (Washington, 1808), a copy of which sold alone at auction in 2021 for $900. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1863. Hardcover. Very good. Two volumes in the rarest binding state (without Burton's name or FRGS on the spines), but with a "second edition" slug on the title pages. This state was apparently unknown to Penzer and was probably the result of an attempt to boost sales by the publisher, as the text is unchanged. Plate of Julu house is the frontispiece to Volume I, and the map (now detached and laid in) is in Volume II. . Both volumes lightly bumped/rubbed, but clean and sound. Small bookplate of F.H. Spencer on each front pastedown. Much to his dismay, Burton's first consular posting landed him on a small, desolate island off the coast of West Africa. He took every opportunity to leave the place, exploring various parts of the mainland and making observations on cultural and traditions, health and sanitary conditions, and slavery, among other things. Small bookplate ("Lavington") on front pastwdown and one "From the Wilberforce Library Backsettown" on front free endpaper. Frontis map slightly misfolded, but overall a near fine copy. Robson was a former employee of the Hudson's Bay Company who had worked as a surveyor and "Supervisor of the Buildings" (i.e., construction superintendent). His experiences convinced him that the Company was mismanaging its holdings so badly that all of northern North America would soon be taken over by the French. Hill (1477) describes this account as one of the earliest and certainly the fullest of works that had hitherto been published on the Hudson Bay Territory," and explains that "Robson, with a sound knowledge of the locale and of the personnel of the Hudson's Bay Company, condemned the company for its failure to promote enterprise and development in its lands."… Leer más

First appearance of two important articles on Texas extracted from Volume XIII, Part 2 of the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society. 8vo, pp 199-226 and 226-244, bound in recent quarter cloth and marbled boards. Fine. Falconer's Journey through Texas and New Mexico (pp. 199-226) describes his travels from Galveston to San Antonio and then to Austin in 1841. This is followed by his account of the Texas Santa Fe Expedition, which, according to Streeter (1496, referencing the 1843 offprint of Falconer's article), differs somewhat from the account he published in New Orleans in 1842. In the last four pages, Falconer argues that Texas was not part of Louisiana when it was ceded by Spain to France. Recent full calf with new endpapers, original red spine label preserved, three armorial ink stamps on the top edge of the text block. Tissue repair to first page of table of contents, ocasional foxing and minor soiling in the margins; overall quite clean and sound. "Barrow accompanied Lord Macartney's mission to the court of China in 1792 as his private secretary, and the present account...is one of the best illustrated English travels on China. The eight plates are from drawings by William Alexander, who also accompanied the embassy and later published his own work. The strict exclusion of Europeans by the Chinese emperors had left China very much terra incognita to the western world well into the nineteenth century. First edition in original publisher's cloth of one of the most important books on the early history Pacific Northwest and the fur trade. Two octavo volumes, pp. xv, 333; viii, 262 + 16 pp publishers' catalog dated September 1855. With lithographed frontispiece in each volume, folding map in Volume I. A very good set in original orange cloth with blind-stamped decoration, gilt lettering on spines. Spines a bit faded (but easily legible), with some minor soiling at the heads, rear hinges starting, occasional light foxing (a bit more on map), but generally sound and clean. Ross (1783-1856) joined Astor's Pacific Fur Company in 1810 and was present at the building of Fort Astoria the following year. New York: Harper and Brothers, 1846. First Edition. Two volumes, pp. xxix,[25]-255; 240, in original brown cloth, with small gilt vignette of a buffalo hunt on each front board. Small losses at spine ends, horizontal crack in spine cloth on Vol. II, scattered foxing, but overall very good. Stewart, a British army officer, first came to America 1832. In search of adventure, he traveled west to the Rockies where he remained for several years, participating in the fur trade and encountering many well-known traders, explorers, trappers, and mountain men -- including Jim Bridger, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Benjamin Boneville, and French-Canadian Cree hunter Antoine Clement, with whom Stewart maintained a same-sex relationship over the course of a decade. This account of his experiences is believed to have been written by Webb, but based directly on Stewart's journals and dictation. Howes S-991; Field 1632; Sabin 91392; Wagner-Camp 125.

Rare lithographed poster advertising a winter scene from a performance by the Ida Siddons Burlesque Company -- a popular, mostly female, troupe of entertainers that toured widely in the United States in the 1880s. Ida Siddons was born in Niagara Falls in 1857 and first appears in newspaper stories as a performer with a "skipping rope act" in the late 1870s. An 1881 article in the San Francisco Examiner mentioned the "first appearance in 'Frisco of the talented eastern character dancer Ida Siddons." Siddons' 1933 obituary in the Brooklyn Times Union credits her with having "organized the first burlesque company in the country." Whether that is accurate we cannot say, but she seems to have launched her company in 1883, when newspapers from several different states refer variously (and with variable placement of apostrophes) to "Ida Siddons' Female Minstrels," "Ida Siddons' Female Mastodons," "Ida Siddons' Female Mastodons and Burlesque Company," and "Ida Siddons' Female… Leer más

Very good. 10" x 13" sting-tied cloth album containing 119 photographs, of which 86 are relatively large and appear to be professional and 33 are amateur snapshots. The professional photographs are a mixture of albumen, gelatin silver, and platinum prints.  Most have penciled captions. They range in size from 4" x 6" to 8.25" x 10.5", with the majority being at least 5.5" x 8". There is one damaged photo (not included in image count) and one page with a photo missing, a few leaves detached from binding. Otherwise, condition is very good. This fascinating album is composed primarily of photographs purchased during the course of travels in India, Java, Thailand, and Cambodia in 1906.  The compiler was Maud Clark Reynolds (1864-1953), an American woman who spent much of that year traveling with her husband, Arthur G. Reynolds (1868-1935). Arthur appears to have made his fortune in the mining industry in Colorado, after which the pair moved to Pasadena, and then Gilroy, California. Both of their… Leer más

Very good. Four photograph albums containing a total of 558 mounted images documenting military training and service in Japan in 1920s and 30s, all in very good condition. Although we acquired these albums together, they appear to have belonged to different people. Most, if not all, were officers. One album has handwritten captions, the others do not, but do have some group photographs with captions in the negative. Two identity documents are tipped in to one album that, we are told, are for people with the family names Yokoo and Hayashi. During the interwar years, Japanese culture was pervaded by the conviction that a strong military was the solution to most problems, foreign and domestic. The Army enjoyed considerable independence from the civilian government, and various factions within the military played a major role in directing the country's foreign policy. The large folding map is supplied in facsimile. Light foxing to title page, stain affecting margin and a small amount of text on last ca. 20 leaves, otherwise quite clean. First edition, first issue (with page numbers 77-88, 270-271, and 302 placed in the inner margin) of one of the most important overland narratives, with considerable detail on the fur trade. Sage (1817-1893) was a self-taught newspaper printer and editor from Ohio with a strong impulse to travel and explore. Each volume 248 pp, and each with a folding map as frontispiece; publisher's catalogue at end of volume two. Housed in a black cloth slipcase. The Doheny copy, with Estelle Doheney's small leather bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume as well as a contemporary ownership signature ("Chas. Henry Hall / Harlem 1837") on the front free endpaper of Volume I. Hall (1781-1852) was a wealthy New York landowner and horse breeder. A very nice, unrestored set with spine labels well preserved, tight bindings. minimal foxing, maps in very good condition. There is, however, offsetting to the title pages from the folded maps. Captain Bonneville spent three years exploring in the Rocky Mountains, funded in part by John Jacob Astor. [London], 1776. Hardcover. Near fine. Second edition of this important report, first issued in 1749 and bound here (as issued) with 12 other committee reports first published between 1737 and 1765. Folio, 486 pp, with one folding map (not related to the Hudson's Bay report), in a later binding of quarter leather and marbled boards. Each report has its own title page, but a title page for the full volume is lacking; otherwise a fine copy. According to ESTC (N69513), four volumes of these committee reports were officially ordered to be printed on 28 June, 1773, and were published in 1774-1776. They were reprinted, along with 11 additional volumes and an index, between 1803 and 1820. The 1803 reprint of this report is commonly found, but this 1776 edition is scarce. See Peel 26, TPL 213. In 1749, the House of Commons appointed a committee of enquiry into the lands and trade of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC).
