Purcell, 1900. Unmounted gelatin silver prints and one mounted boudoir card, most images measuring 8 x 5 and 7 x 4 ½ inches. Varying levels of fading, else about fine. With gallery stamps of Fenn Gallery, Santa Fe verso. Near Fine. In the years following the Land Run of 1889, which opened land in Indian Territory to Euro-American settlement, professional and amateur photographers alike moved to the region. Their motives varied, with some attempting to document the vanishing indigenous culture and others trying to capitalize on the Euro-American demand for photographs of Native Americans in both traditional and western attire. Some studios would use single sets of props for different tribes. Despite these issues, the images from the period do illuminate the period of acculturation and displacement in the history of the Southern Plains Indians tribes, and also provide a record of the motives of the Euro-American photographers behind the camera. William J. Lenny and William L. Sawyers were… Leer más

Descripción:
N.P.: Treasury Department, 1793. Partially printed document signed by Hamilton and finished in another hand. Fine condition. With the original receipt from Ben Boomfield Autographs, sold in 1954 to the previous owner. Fine. Among Hamilton's many signal achievements as the first Secretary of the Treasury under the new Constitution was his creation in 1791 of the First Bank of the United States. Founded on British models - the Bank of England had been established in 1694 - this new institution would be vital to the development of the postwar economy. The Revolution caused profound disruptions to commerce and industry, and the new country began its saga under the weight of enormous debt, a devalued currency, and high inflation. A central bank, tasked with collecting tax revenues, holding public funds, paying government debts, and issuing paper currency, was Hamilton's solution. Starting with a 20-year charter and a capitalizaion of $10 million, the First Bank of the United States opened for business on… Leer más

Massachusetts, 1926. Ink on paper, 18 ½ x 23 ½ inches. Excellent. Alexander Johnson, an African-American musician from New Bedford, enlisted in the army at age 16 and was believed for some time to be the first African-American musician in the Union Army. He mustered into mustered into Company "C" of the Massachusetts 54th Infantry under Colonel Shaw. The 54th Massachusetts was the second African-American regiment in the Union army, formed only after the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry. New Bedford had a large population of escaped slaves, and African-Americans from the city enrolled heavily. Johnson had been orphaned at a young age and his adopted father, William Henry Johnson, strongly advocated for African-American enrollment in the Union army, a factor which most likely played a part in the young Alex's enrollment at age sixteen. Johnson served in the 54th for the duration of the war, including the bloody charge of Fort Wagner on Morris Island on July 18, 1863. The 54th lost 272 of its… Leer más

Chile, 1890. Large folio containing forty seven photographs, most measuring 8 x 10 inches, taken in Chile. Some foxing, particularly to mounts, some photographs detached and many repaired previously at hinges with cloth tape, photographs with very good contrast, very good minus condition overall, photographs quite attractive and worthy of preservation. Very Good. A collection of scarce nineteenth century views of Chile taken by an unknown but quite accomplished photographer in the 1890s, showing scenes in the central region including Valdivia, Coronel, Concepcion, the Biobio bridge, and the surrounding regions. The photographer, who is quite accomplished technically. The photographs document the area at a time of industrial expansion, with rail travel reaching Valdivia in the 1890s made possible in part by the construction of the Malleco Viaduct, the steel mills of Corral representing the largest private investment in Chile at the time, and the region generally expanding population-wise. Descripción:
New York: RCA Corporation, 1940. Very Good. In the late 1930s, television was in its experimental phase and radio dominated the American media landscape. RCA and its NBC network directed experimental broadcasts from their studio in Radio City, broadcasting from a transmitter at the top of the Empire State Building. The first large scale exposure the American public had to the new technology was at the 1939 World's Fair. NBC and its parent company, RCA, initiated a schedule of programming the same year to coincide with the exhibition. The onset of war, the expense of the new machines, and the limited geographic range of the broadcast limited the amount of television consumers until after the war. RCA's involvement in the development of television began in 1929, when the inventor Vladimir Zworykin convinced RCA's David Sarnoff to produce a commercial version of his prototype system. Sarnoff and RCA would eventually invest millions of dollars in the project. The present collection shows this… Leer más

[New London]: Likely Timothy Green, 1776. First Edition. Broadside, small folio measuring 11 x 6 ½ inches, [2] pp. Light wear, near fine overall. Near Fine. Recent scholarship on the American Revolution, such as David C. Hsiung's Environmental History and the War of Independence: Saltpeter and the Continental Army's Shortage of Gunpowder (Spero, The American Revolution Reborn, Philadelphia, 2016. Pp. 205-230), has explored the role of environmental history in the conflict, arguing that "the shortage of gunpowder affected the Continental Army''s ability to wage war." Faced with shortages, and a ban on the export of saltpeter outside of Great Britain, the situation grew more direthis period, before trade with France eased the shortages somewhat. Offered here is a very uncommon broadside from Connecticut, encouraging the production of saltpeter in Connecticut per a law passed on December 14 of 1775, during a period which saw similar laws passed in various other colonies. The act established a… Leer más

Northern California, 1880. 4to, one album in burgundy cloth, the other oblong brown pebbled cloth. Seventy-one sepia-toned and cyanotype photographs, most measuring 6 ½ x 4 ½ inches. Near fine with some light wear to albums, photographs very good or better with very good contrast, some showing a hint of fading. A very early pair of vernacular photograph albums, centering on the experiences of a wealthy family in San Francisco, Monterey, and the surrounding areas in the late 1880s. The bulk of the images show the family and their unidentified circle in domestic scenes, with the vernacular architecture and landscapes of the Bay Area on full display. Other images show landmarks including Golden Gate Park, the Francis Scott Key monument, various views of the first Hotel del Monte in Monterey, which would burn in 1887, dating the photographs to the period prior to the fire. The album also includes photographs of African American families. The image quality is generally quite strong, and the… Leer más

New York: NAACP, 1922. Broadside measuring 15 x 10 ⅞ inches. Some loss at corners else near fine with fine contrast, light normal wear and free of foxing, very good overall. Very Good. A striking broadside printed by the NAACP in 1922, likely in support of the Dyer Lynching Bill, which passed the House of Representatives but not the Senate in that year. The NAACP had focused on lynching and anti-lynching legislation from 1916 onward. The organization partnered with Anti-Lynching Crusaders to organize rallies, mobilize volunteers and advertise. This broadside was part of the group's efforts, and takes issue with rape specifically, debunking the theory that rape could justify the thousands of documented lynchings reported from 1889 to 1922. An important and rare piece, which is often found in lesser condition, with a heavily foxed copy selling at Swann Galleries in 2018 ($4,250).

Montana Territory, 1872. Lot of seventy-six checks measuring 8 ½ x 4 inches, with vignette illustration of a prospector and his dog. With one additional document relating to the Hershfield account with the Bank of California. Most checks issued to "Gold Coin," and drawn on the Bank of California in San Francisco. The checks are printed by Robert F. Macey Stationery in New York. Fine condition with an occasional tear and chip. Fine. In 1870, one out of ten residents of Montana Territory were of Chinese descent, a figure that would decline precipitously in the ensuing decades until Chinese-Americans made up less than one percent of the population around the turn of the century. Chinese immigrants arrived in Montana following the discovery of gold in Bannack and Virginia City in the 1860s. Many of the Chinese immigrants settled and worked in the Big Belt Mountains east of Helena, including the Cave, Cooper, Oregon, and Confederate Gulches. Darkening at folds from old tape repairs; partial splits to folds and extremities; complete and quite Good. Docketed verso, signed in ink by Lieutenant M[organ?] Owen. Lists twelve enlisted soldiers, most with Spanish surnames (two with French surnames). Fine. The formation of the California Native Cavalry in 1863 marked a significant chapter in the state's history. Comprising primarily Mexican-American individuals, colloquially referred to as "native" Californians, the California Native Cavalry unit was formed 1863. Initially commanded by Maj. Andreas Pico, a distinguished hero from the Mexican-American War, and later under Salvador Vallejo, the regiment drew its ranks from diverse backgrounds. Recruitment efforts began with vaqueros from southern California, expanding to include individuals from San José and San Francisco. The unit boasted a varied composition,… Leer más

V.P., 1970. Fifty-one photographs, most measuring 3.5 x 5 inches, in hard plastic sleeves, as found. From the estate of Drew Bundini Brown. Generally fine condition with some normal fading to images, with subject identification stickers on sleeves. Drew 'Bundini' Brown worked as Muhammad Ali's cornerman from 1963 onward, after working previously for Sugar Ray Robinson. He also wrote some of Ali's speeches, including the famous "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" poem that Ali famously used to taunt Sonny Liston. He got his start in boxing while working two doors down from Sugar Ray Robinson's bar "Sugar Ray's," where he befriended the fighter and gained his trust. "I saw Muhammad reciting poetry on television in Greenwich Village-that was no way to train for a fight," Robinson said. "The next day I told Muhammad he needed somebody to watch over him, somebody to keep him happy and relaxed. I had just the guy for him. His name was Drew Brown, but he called himself 'Bundini.'" Mostly Patagonia, 1890. Printing-out paper prints, the images measuring 3 1/4x4 1/2 to 4 1/4x6 inches, and the reverse, each with a caption, written on a label affixed to the mount below the prints. 4to, blue pictorial cloth. 1890s. In this bound photo album, forty-six photographs document a group traveling from pastoral locations in northern Argentina to breathtaking views at the southern tip of the continent. The photographs were taken by an accomplished photographer, and handwritten captions in English provide brief descriptions of the locations and people documented. Apparently a member of an exploration commission, the photographer and his team travel first from Bahia Brazil to Buenos Aires and La Pláta, then on to the southern tip of the continent, and back up the continent through remote lakes and mountains on both sides of the Chilean/Argentinian border. While the photographer's name and nationality are not clear from the album, there are two photographs with a Sr. Moreno, who is likely the… Leer más

N.p., 1863. Dark carved wood, 11 ½ x 11 ½ x 1 inches, with bone border and star inlays in corners, an inlaid tree with carved names of Civil War battles as leaves. During the Civil War, wounded or captured soldiers would often pass their time waiting to return to duty carving relics. The practice was fairly common, with pipes being the most commonly carved object, and the quality of the relics varied wildly depending on the talent of the soldier. A.H. Barber, from Wisconsin, was wounded at Antietam and most likely carved this memorial piece while recovering from his wounds. Each leaf notes a different battle during the 1861-1862 campaigns. Barber enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Wisconsin in 1861, and was discharged in 1863 following wounds suffered at Antietam. The trunk reads Battles for the Union and the four branches read Dept. of the South, Army of Virginia & of the Potomac, and Dept. of the West, with twenty-nine leaves naming battles. The resultant plaque is exceptional in timeliness,… Leer más

Alaska, 1901. Oblong folio, 12 ½ x 9 inches. Twelve leaves with 89 photographs rebound in modern cloth. Binding in fine condition, photographs generally excellent, some leaves with clear tape repairs. A well preserved album of photographs showing mining operations in the Golovin Bay region, about fifty to seventy-five miles northwest of Nome, during the tail end of the Klondike Gold Rush period in 1900-1901. The album shows the operations of the Pioneer Company in Alaska in great detail, including the travel by boat and the camps along Opher Creek, as well as many photographs of the mining operation itself. According to a caption in one of the photographs, $12,000 worth of gold was taken out of the "Discovery Claim" on Ophir Creek. The album also includes several photographs of the indigenous population. The compiler of the book appears to have been a student at a mining college at some point, as some of the photographs show a "Class of '04'" sign. The photographs are dated from 1897 to 1901.… Leer más

Tear with loss at margin of circular from original opening of the folded circular, with the remainder present under the wax seal, else fine, exceptionally well preserved. Fine. An important and very scarce circular announcing the World Anti-Slavery Convention of 1840, a significant event in the global abolition movement and the history of the Women's Movement, particularly notable for the inclusion of many women speakers including the Americans Lucrecia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. This circular was sent to Gerrit Smith - who was Stanton's cousin - by the secretary of the BFASS, John Scoble, with an autograph letter inviting him as a delegate to a convention planned for 1843 on the blank pages preceding the printed portion. The World Anti-Slavery Convention was organized by the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society - an organization which still exists… Leer más
