Volume I - xvii, 385 pgs. 8 woodcut illustrs.(including frontis) and 1 tinted lithograph plate. 3 folding charts at end (1 colour) Volume II - xi, 395 pgs. 2 woodcut illustrs. and 5 tinted lithograph plates (including frontis) 2 folding charts at end. Several of the colour plates are a tiny bit trimmed along the fore-edge. Both volumes have been recently rebacked with the original spine laid over. New title labels have been placed between panels. Endpapers have the shadow of a bookplate removal. No names or other marks in text. Typical scuffing to marbled paper over the boards. Leather is moderately scuffed. Large folding map called for in Volume II is bound into Vol.I. Volume II: viii, 380 pgs. Frontis and 8 plates (5 in colour) plus examples of Finland and Lapland music. 2 volumes in early 20th century half leather bindings, with noted misbound plate & map, contemporary bookplate in each volume, typical offsetting from plates, map hinges tender. Acerbi (1773-1846) was an Italian naturalist and composer, and this record of early travels in Scandinavia describes the customs of the people, detailed observations on natural history, with much on the people of Lapland in Volume II. Rebound in brown cloth with red leather title labels. J.S. Polack (1807-1882) lived in New Zealand during 1831-37 and 1840-50. As an enterprising businessman and land speculator, Polack traded in timber and flax and in 1835 set up the countries first brewery. He also learned the Maori language and warned against the destructive effects of unorganized European settlement on Maori society, while arguing the benefits of systematic colonization. This two volume work, published in 1838, was the first of two successful books Polack published about his experiences in New Zealand, and is still regarded as an important and impartial source about the period immediately before the Treaty of Waitangi. Dust jacket is essentially fine but has typical age toning along the spine. Not price clipped. Half leather binding with marbled paper over boards, endpapers & edges. Recently recased with new backstrip and strengthened hinges. Leather on the corner tips has worn through to the boards. (see photo) Subtitle reads; With Adventures Among the Mountain Kirghis; and the Manjours, Manyargs, Toungouz, Touzemtz, Goldi, and Gelyaks: the Hunting and Pastoral Tribes. In the preface the author explains that his previous work, "Oriental and Western Siberia" was nothing more than "descriptive narrative of a remote part of the globe" and that this present work is information of a more 'elevated character', intended to satisfy the geologist, botanist, ethnologist and other scientific scholars.

Contemporary gift inscription to the first blank page of volume 1 and bookplates to the front pastedown endpapers of each volume. Weakened outer hinge at the top of vol.1. This is the first English edition and account by German scientist and explorer, Adolph Erman, of the 1828-29 Norwegian expedition to Russia and Siberia to study the north magnetic pole. Treatises on the life and work of the "Patriarch" of violin makers. Inventory of 700 known or recorded Stradivari string instruments. Index of 3,500 names of past or present Stradivari owners. Photographs of 400 Stradivari instruments with 1,500 views. The author single handedly researched, wrote, edited, published and received orders for this definitive work on Strads. Cloth along the spine has slight concave due to the weight of the volume. Publishing information on the last page indicates a 3rd printing with no indication of a 'limited edition'. (according to my translator) A scarce collection; excellent condition in original dust jacket with very light wear around the edges and corner tips. Original card slipcase included. Studio name embossed lower right corner on each photo. Visible photo size is 8.5 X 11 inches. Frame size is 14.5 X 17 inches. Old Bedouin Woman and Ramallah Peasant Spinning Wool. Matted and framed in Glasgow by Porteous & Co. Both, excellent examples. Please appreciate that my photographs were taken under low light to help buffer the glare from the glass. The American Colony in Jerusalem was started in 1881 by Anna and Horatio Spafford of Chicago and was later joined by a group of Swedish-American Christians. They engaged in philanthropic work among the people of Jerusalem building the trust of the local Muslim, Jewish, and other Christian communities. "For Merchants Only". xviii, and 440 pages with b/w illustrations for every item, several product advertising pages in colour and 4 pages of paint sample chips at the end. A wonderful collection of hardware items from A to Z with descriptions and pricing. Original text block has been (not recently) rebound in green cloth with the original red cloth and titles laid onto the front cover. Expect some light scuffs and staining (photos available) Back hinge is split but secure. An uncommon example from a company that eventually became a fixture in many Northern Canadian communities.

Translated into English for the first time by H.H. Langton. Red cloth faded along the spine.Top edge gilt. No names or marks in text. Sagard was a Recollet Brother who in 1623-24 lived among the Hurons, France's main Indian allies and fur trading partners at the time. He kept meticulous notes on all that he saw and did, and his observations of Huron life form one of the most comprehensive written records of their culture in the early years of white contact.

"The object of these expeditions was mainly to study the natural history and explore remote regions where he hoped to discover the breeding haunts of several uncommon birds that migrate to Great Britain to rear their young.

Considered the most comprehensive work on the topic, recording near ten thousand items. "Privately printed in a very small edition and likely never to be reprinted or superseded."
