Previous owners names (3) on ffep, title page and page 1. Three hand-coloured plates show an Officer, an Arab soldier and an Arnaout soldier. Cloth on front board has bubbled up in spots. Corners bumped ang rubbed, spine ends worn. Upper inside corner of rear board, rear endpaper stained. Text has a number of passages where last names were identified with initial only, a previous owner has written out the names in the margins the first time they appear. A first-hand account of the Crimean War. Money left England to take part in the war, joining the Bashi-Bazouks in July 1855, a band of mercenary troops fighting as irregulars with the Ottoman army.; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall .

Rear endpaper has light foxing. Table of contents (vi) , 353 pp. Third edition from the Third London edition, greatly annotated by the author. To which is appended an article from the North British Review. Bottom stitching on one gather Is gone, next one up is loose. Remaing ones are still present (pages 171 to 190). Vestiges was an important Victorian speculation on natural historym providing a narrative tieing together a number of scientific theories of the day. Stamps on the front cover from Intelligence Branch, Militia Department, Ottawa May 19, 1906. Also stamped Survey Division Dept. Of Militia & Defence Reference Map Library. Map No. 6, Drawer No. 4. This is a meticulously detailed, hand-drawn, linen-backed map measuring 27 inches across by 41 inches high. Scale 1 inch to 1 mile, vertical interval 40 ft. The map has been dissected, and sections placed on the linen backing to accomodate the folds. Covers an area from just north of London, Ont. Down to the shores of Lake Erie. Ink is slightly faded, light smudging in one corner. Linen edges lightly worn, front cover with the military stamps is worn, portion of one corner of the paper is missing .
