c.1815 Oil on canvas gilt framed portrail of King Philip IV of Spain.
Attributed to Sir Thomas Lawrence crafted in the manner or style of Diego Velazquez, the Court Painter.
The painting was dated by an expert valuer to 1810-20 based on the frame, the age of the paint and also by the particular weave of the canvas, being of the type woven on the earliest canvas-making machine which was invented in 1805 in France and became used more widely from 1810 onwards.
The subject King Philip IV reigned from 1621-1665 having been born in 1605. He was called the Planet King (Rey Planeta) and reigned during the Thirty Years War, while also being renowned as a patron of some of the earliest great Old Master artists such as Spaniard Diego Velazquez and also Peter Paul Rubens the famous Flemish artist.

Original artwork on paper signed and dated by Pablo Picasso ink & mixed media PORTRAIT OF OLGA PICASSO. Dated 1969 in ink, this is an ink-lined watercolour & dye portrait on paper. Mixed media watercolour on white paper by Pablo Picasso of his first wife the Russian dancer Olga Khokhlova in the African head-dress she wore as a famous dancer in the 1920's. A retrospective piece for Picasso working on the theme of his oldest muse at the tail end of his life. A typical re-expression here while keeping Olga's staring eye as the central focus, adding a deep blue dye (applied to rear of paper) at her neck, as well as radiating fields behind and before her head, each with a spot or point of focus. Olga was Picasso's first great muse and wife from 1917-55 when she passed away. Their relationship is well documented. The signature is neat and authentic. Pablo Picasso ink portrait of Dora Maar, signed & dated 19.5.53. An early ink example of his muse Dora Maar, an artistic theme that was developed by Picasso in ensuing years. Some photos shown here are of later usages of this theme of Dora by Picasso, but the ink drawing for sale here predates those works, being an earlier attempt by Picasso to capture his Dora on paper. This beautiful, magnetic piece of art has an authentic signature and is dated in the artist's usual style - check the numbers against those seen in other examples of his signed drawings and lithographs online, you will see this is perfectly genuine. The paper shows slight age spots (see photos), although it is that yellowish paper which Picasso used for many artworks (later switching to white paper for portraits). The depth of his yellowed fine paper was generally about 21 cm, as here. The signature is in his classic style slanted upwards and underlined. THE WARSAW MERMAID (SYRENKA WARSZAWSKA) 1950 Signed & Dated by Pablo Picasso Original art drawing on paper (17 cm x 21 cm)The original form of this image was first drawn by Picasso upon a wall in Warsaw in 1948, as a peace symbol after World War 2. About 4 years later an elderly local Polish resident objected to it and Picasso's "Peace Mermaid" was washed off and painted over by the local council. In the meantime Picasso had committed the image for posterity onto this piece of paper, signed and dated 4th September 1950.A genuine artwork by the 20th Century's great master, this peace symbol of the Warsaw Mermaid Syrenka in Polish, while in English she is Sabrena. Curiously the Latin name Sabrina was paralleled in Celtic Britain as Savren (Havren), the princess whose life ended in the river Severn, which then tok its name from her. Pablo Picasso: "Portrait Of Francoise Gilot Seated On A Bath" Drawn and Signed in ink & Dated in his style 4th October 1950. Picasso re-used this sheet of paper, having earlier used the other side to form a charcoal sketch. Having given up on that, he turned over the page (evidencing he was short of art paper) and drew a baseline in charcoal at the bottom with the rest of this novel work then being completed with an ink art pen. This is a nude portrait of his then girlfriend Francoise Gilot seated on the edge of a bath and holding or twirling a piece of string, We can see this is the profile of Francoise by her distinctive nose and her raised eyebrow line. The signature and date are authentically formed in Picasso's known style. If you compare with other signed lithographs and artworks on paper you will see the form of the signature and numerals (particularly the 4 and 5 here) positively match many other known works by the master. Original iconic First Edition Poster Pullout from 1865 by Robert Prowse (his printed signature lower left), which came free gratis with the Second Issue (or Re-Issue) of the penny dreadful comics BLACK BESS 1865-67 written by Edward Viles and John Frederick Smith. One of the best known Dick Turpin images in the world available exclusively in rare first edition form sold as a separate piece. I have 15 of the 20 original BLACK BESS poster pullouts in the First Edition, 9 are in colour and 6 are black & white, also their conditions vary so they are being sold and listed separately.
Even the British Museum only has a part set of 8 and they are 3rd edition posters, with 20 posters produced in the range. The poster for sale here comes from the only 1st edition set known to exist in the entire world. BLACK BESS or THE KNIGHT OF THE ROAD in Two Volumes by Edward VIles & John Frederick Smith. 18.5 cm x 27 cm Recently rebound collection of BLACK BESS penny dreadfuls issued from 1865-7 in the second edition or first re-issue. The parts here were originally bound in two volumes by the publisher, evidenced by the fact that the page edges are neatly and uniformly trimmed and patterning was applied to the edges, which could not happen from a free collection by a consumer. The original boards were weak and worn, so to preserve the contents they were professionally rebound as seen with new boards joined onto leather spine. Issued in 1865-7 in many parts, each part sold for One Penny. The earlier parts of this 2nd edition of BLACK BESS were issued along with the rare pullout posters (see other listings for a selection available to buy) which equalled 20 in all according to the page edge notes which explain which pullout posters were issued with what parts of the story.
