Bradford, T. Inkersley, 1818, second edition, pp. 69, [3], engraved frontis. original roan-backed boards. Binding slightly rubbed, some slight dustiness, but a very good copy. Both first and second editions are uncommon.

Newcastle, T and J Hodgson, 1827, pp. [2], xxii, 312, complete with engraved frontis. and seven plates, 4 illustrations in the text and 2 double-page pedigrees. Bound in modern cloth-backed marbled boards, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Some foxing of plates and adjacent pages, but very good condition. Armorial bookplate of Willam Henry Brockett and with inscription by John Trotter Brockett recording the book's gift to him by the author and his gift of it to his son W H Brockett. The Brocketts were a prominent family in Newcastle and Gateshead. The collection survives in Newcastle and is notable for its inclusion of specimens brought back by Captain Cook. Two of the cuts are by Thomas Bewick and there are copper engravings of the Rakkelhan Grous and the Wombat by Robert E Bewick (Hugo 472).

Bristol, Douglas Cleverdon, 1929, folio, self-portrait frontis., title page device, 103 engravings, colophon device. Original black cloth, spine lightly worn at hinges, a few marks, but very sound. Occasionsl very light foxing, but contents nice and clean. One of onlly 400 copies thus.

London, Edward Churton, 1836, two volumes in one, pp. xxiii, [3], 356, [ii], 402, folding map and four plates, probably lacking the half title to volume 2. Near contemporary half morocco over marbled boards. Booards rubbed, but binding firm. Some internal soiling, mainly to the preliminary leaves of each volume, plate margins browned, but generally a sound copy. An important description of the Zulu nation. See Mendelssohn vol. 1, pp 760-761 for a lengthy paragraph on the book and its "valuable notes on the country, its language, population and customs of the natives".

K Baldwin, London, 1784, 8vo, pp. (4), xv, (8), 443. Modern full calf with leather title label. Complete with the half title. Some tiny chips to top edge of title page, occasional foxing and browning, but very good condition.

H. Rhodes, London, 1701, first English edition, translated from the French, pp. xl, [4], 266, [26]. With 4 small plates on two leaves, plus the very large fold-out plate. Attractive contemporary panelled calf, neatly rebacked with a fully gilt spine. Paper generally foxed and browned, small plates a little frayed at the fore-margins, large plate (which is frequently missing or defective) with old repaired tears and some staining, but complete. Includes a chapter on whether the use of tobacco shortens life. In spite of the browning a very sound copy. Please enquire for further details.

London, for Tho Woodward and C. Davis, 1741, first edition in Englsh, 8vo, pp. [12], 470, [8], with six folding plates. Contemporary calf with porobably later leather title label. Small blank torner torn from one leaf, short, clean split to one fold of plate 2, else very good, clean and sound condition, Contemporary signature of Charles Nobileau on title page ( in the mid 18th century there was a Huguenot sheriff of Dublin of that name ).

Rochdale, Hartley for the author, 1816, pp. (4), xiv, 414, (no page 311/312 as is correct). Modern half leather binding over cloth sides. Binding sound, paper browned with some foxing, especially heavy on pages 298 to 310.. Ink name on title and the previous owner has blind stamped his name to the corner of several leaves. As well as canals and reservoirs the author covers cotton manufacture, corn mills and public drains. A sound copy of a rare book.

Rochdale, 1905, privately printed for presentation to the family only. Quarto, pp. xix, 380, with a huge number of illustrations and pedigrees. A magnificent production bound in full decorated vellum. The authors state in the introduction that the work cost them £1700 to produce. Excellent condition and it should be noted that the large main pedigree normally inserted in a pocket at the back of the book is here bound separately in leather. There is a chapter on the Heapes and Australia 1839 to 1867.

James Nisbet & Co. Limited, 1908. pp. xii, 462 with many illustrations and folding pedigrees. Original black buckram, a little rubbed, but sound. A note to the title page states "Printed for Private Circulation (75 Copies)". Together with A Supplement to a Family Biography edited by Rachel Ryan, for Private Circulation 1929, pp. viii, 272, illustrated, original black cloth. Very good condition. The main volume is inscribed to the front endpaper "1932 This was C. P. S's personal copy and was given to F.S.A. after his death." A note at the front of the supplement suggests that F,S.A .was F. S. Attenborough. At the end of the main volume are various manuscript and typed additions plus a Second Appendix on the case of Scott v Shepherd. Copac records only two libraries holding the first volume and none for the supplement. Extensive information on the family history of C P Scott (1846-1932), the great Manchester Guardian editior and proprietor.

Wirksworth, J. Cotes, 1810, 8vo, pp. xx, 150, with two illustrations and list of subscribers. Paper discoloured in places, but very good condition in modern quarter calf with marbled paper boards. Particlarly relates to lead mining in the High Peak of Derbyshire.

Frederick Warne & Co, [1866], 16mo, pp.94, {2), coloured frontis and four plates. One of Warne's Bijou Books. Original pictorial cloth, gilt edges. Very good, clean condition. Drazin A27.

A. W. Bennett, 1865, pp. 132. Original cloth gilt. Binding a little rubbed to the back cover, and perhaps skilfully repaired or re-cased, but tight and sound. Some light foxing in places, but the photos are good and sharp. With 16 mounted photographs. Gernsheim 279.

London, Jonathan Cape, 1969, first edition, illustrations by Quentin Blake. Exceptionally clean, crisp condition in similar dust jacket, which is now in a loose protective sleeve. There is perhaps just a very slight "pushing" to the spine ends. As usual with Cape books the tips of the jacket flaps are clipped to prevent creasing, but NOT price-clipped. London, for the author, 1791. Includes "a Particular Account of the Royal Harem". Bound in full contemporary marbled calf, leather title label (little rubbed at one edge), complete with the folding map.Condition. Very light rubbing in places, endpapers browned at edges, some foxing to the map which has an old repair to the back, but a quite exceptionally attractive copy inside and out. This first edition is scarce; it is the second edition of 1793 which is more usually seen.

Manchester, Henry Smith, 1828, pp. [2], 230. Original boards with paper label. largely unopened. A little dusty, but in exceptional sound and original condition. Includes "a reply to an article on the Spinning Machinery contained in a recent number of the Edinburgh Review." Goldsmith 25498.

Edinburgh, 1807, 8vo, pp. vi, 294. Modern half calf over marbled boards. Very small chip to foot of title page, else very good condition.

Jonathan Cape, 1929, first edition. Original green cloth, a variant to the usual brown. Very light wear to spine ends, corners a little bumped and some trivial marks, but a sound copy. Inscribed by Ransome to his long time fishing companion Colonel T. E. Kelsall (see A. R.'s Autobiography, page 327). Hammond A24.

W. Miller, London, 1807. First edtion of the first book in English devoted to the game of billiards. Engraved frontis and 16 plates, without the half title, but with the publisher's catalogue at the end. Contemporary half calf a bit rubbed, joints split, back cover a bit "wobbly" beng mainly secured by the cords. Still a pleasant copy.

Ring Athletic Library, 1938 to 1947. Complete set of 5 volumes, all bound in the original orange cloth, and all in very good condition.
