Volume I has the SEAL and SIGNATURE of Hutchinson. Rebound in half leather (Sennett, NY). Marbled boards and endpapers, with gilt lettering on spine, five raised bands. Top edge gilt (dulled). Volume II chipped at top of spine, with amateur repair. Three top corners worn through to boards. Staining visible on bottom of side edge of both volumes. First 50 pages of Volume I have some mild staining at the top of the pages, near the spine, and 25 pages at the rear have staining at the top of the spine, darker and longer for the last 10 pages. Volume II has some light staining and bubbling at the bottom of the pages. Some darkening to pages, with only very light occasional foxing. Solid, tight binding. Volume I has two previous owner names and dates (1904 and 1934). Top right corner of title page of Volume II has a rectangular piece cut away at the top right corner, 1/4 inch by 1 1/2 inch. Very good-. Limited edition, no. 90/100 with hand colored illustrations and signed by author, Julia M. Seton, and illustrator, Ernest Thompson Seton, on limitation page. Original wooden boards rebacked with leather spine and sky blue end papers. Wooden boards show some scuffs, scratches, wear, light stain and thin cracks to rear board. Leather spine with gilt lettering. Faint library blind stamp on title page, and barely visible library stamp on bottom edge of page block; no other library markings noted. First signature reinforced.

Front board detached, misc. flaws including rubbing and scuffing to spine and covers with some loss. Opens to title page. Shows only light foxing.  Worm hole at end of book, at top of pages, slightly affecting pages 207 - 224.  Has the bookplate of George Scott Esqr. of Woolston Hall in the County of Essex.  Solid binding. Volume two only.

Claassen, Hamburg, 1970. Folio, cream-colored cloth with red & grey design on cover. A signed limited edition featuring text by Margarete Hannsmann and 40 original colored woodcuts by HAP Grieshaber. VG with mild soil to boards, slight rubbing to bottom corners and two tiny indentations on front cover near spine.

Privately printed; Morrisania, NY, 1865. Limited edition, one of 250 copies signed by Dawson, this being copy #225. Quarto, 51 pages printed on heavy paper, bound in covered boards with leather spine with "Diary of David How" and "Dawson" on the spine. Printed from the original manuscript of David How, who enlisted in the Army of the American Revolution when he was 17, was one of the Minute-men, and fought at Bunker Hill. A biographical sketch of How is provided by George Wingate Chase. The diary is extensively annotated and makes for fascinating reading. Spine scuffed; back board discolored at top and at bottom corner; some staining to top edge. Contents fine except for light, almost imperceptible dampstaining along top edge and at top corner (more visible on the last leaves). An important piece of first-hand miltary history.

Good+, two volumes, complete. Limited edition, 'large paper edition', no 71/100, on handmade paper. One quarter leather with green cloth boards with gilt lettering and decorations. Leather spine show scuffs and wear, some wear to green cloth, mostly at corners. Brief description of book pasted on front fixed end paper. Crease along the edge of the picture of the frontispiece.

Jonathan Cape, London, 1960. Second printing (first published 1954). A very attractive copy in dust jacket. Octavo, 253 pages bound in woven green cloth with burgandy lettering on spine and bird image on cover. Illustrated from drawings by Raymond Sheppard. VG+/VG+: Pages are slightly yellowed, light spotting to side and bottom page edges, but interior is clean and book appears to have been hardly used. Dust jacket has a mild crease at very top of spine, and some light rubbing to spine ends. Jonathan Cape price sticker on front flap. A novel about children helping to set up a wild bird preserve in the Western Isles of Scotland, "forty miles beyond the Outer Hebrides.

E. Plon, Paris, nd. Oblong octavo bound in dark brown silk cloth, cover paste-on illustration. Delightful color illustrations on every page showing circus menagerie at work and at play. VG: binding still tight, wear to corners, some faint staining to back cover. Front endpaper creased; light foxing on right margin of title page; some darkening to page edges; very light staining to front cover. A scarce title by an illustrator known for his comical depiction of animal behavior.

Patrick Donahoe, Boston, 1854. 4th edition of a title first published in 1845. Octavo bound in dark brown, blind-stamped pebbled boards, 208 pp. Much of the book concerns Irish history at the time of Daniel O'Connell, the Liberator of Ireland. The author was a founder of the Young Ireland Party and fled to America in 1848, where he espoused the Irish cause through journalism, poetry and oratory. VG+ (top edge darkened, slight wear to spine tips and corners, light foxing. A nice-looking, tight copy.

Fernand Roches, Paris, 1931. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies on handmade paper, this being copy #438. Octavo, 57 pp., plain white boards with dust jacket; tissue guard over dj; housed in a chemise and slipcase; printed label on chemise spine. Text in French. A number of gravure illustrations are scattered throughout the text, which is printed in red and black. Book and dust jacket are near fine; tissue guard is crinkled at top; chemise is worn and missing a small section at top of spine; box is lightly stained and lacks the top edge.

Milano, Edizioni Dell'Esame, 1944. Monograph on the Italian artist and sculptor. Octavo, 217 pp., 146 reproductions. Paper-covered boards (worn, spotted and darkened) with woven cloth spine; wear along edges and corners. Front endpapers separated from top to bottom, but book still held together by three linen hinges. Back cover still tight, but endpapers beginning to separate at bottom. Ownership stamps on front endpaper and on all page edges.

Boer, Munich, 1990. Slim quarto, 60 pp. The Book of Esther told in German. Illustrations in color by David Bennett. Laid in is a handwritten one-page letter from Bennett dated June 14, 2003, referring to work he has done since 1990. Also laid in are a current (June-Sept. 2003) catalogue of the artist's work at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, and a sheet of paper with six color xeroxed examples of the artist's work, Book and dust jacket are near fine save for a dent to the top right corner.

Editions Du Scorpion, Amsterdam, 1931. First printing, one of a small number of copies, as it says on the colophon page. These timeless songs have been set to music and illustrated by Marcel Prangey, whose line drawings bring to mind Robert Lawton; however, the images in this book are definitely erotic, even shocking. Fifty-three illustrations, nicely printed on watermarked paper. This is a beautiful copy in cream wraps with title printed in red on cover and spine; VG+ with light wear to edges and tiny loss to spine at bottom.

Macmillan, NY, 1924. Reprint of 1916 edition. Subtitle: "A new method of physical development for boys and girls based on the Ten Elements of Simple Tumbling and adapted from the practice of professional acrobats." An unusual book: a practical system of physical training built around the circus idea. Contents include how to prepare a show with fake elephants and lions (as well as real animals), clowns, tumbling, acrobatics, and "The Old-Fashioned Minstrel Show" with dialogues. Book is VG+ in blue cloth; very attractive front cover with lots of bright gilt. Dust jacket is VG-, foxed on front cover and crinkled on back cover near bottom edge; great cover photo of 4 boys performing stunt.

No date, no place, no publisher. Square quarto bound in white stiff wraps, title printed on cover. A series of 20 color photographs printed on one side with captions on facing page. Crieger poses his models against stark backgrounds, makes full use of color effects, and highlights them with erotic motifs. The impression is of Hollywood at 5 a.m., strange and solitary. Issued in a plastic sleeve which has been signed by the photographer with an inscription in German.

U of New Mexico Press, Alburquerque, 1945. The sixth in the important but rarely seen series published by the U of NM and the School of American Research. The subtitle is: Studies on the Natural History of the Rio Grande Valley in Relation to Pueblo Indian Culture. Square octavo, 182 pages. Some evocative photographs accompany this presentation of post-war Pueblo culture, the customs and traditions of which stretch back to antiquity. Folding maps. Beautiful cover illustration showing a map of the universe as understood by the Pu e b los, a beautiful production all around. Book is near fine in dark blue binding (name written on front endpaper); dust jacket is very good, missing one inch from bottom of spine, a thin strip from the top, and a small chip in between which takes o ut part of one author's name; a small chip is also missing from back panel. The glorious front cover is intact, with some slight soil and wear to bottom right corner.

Whitman, Racine WI, 1927. First printing, 29 pages. Text block sewn into cardboard covers with color illustrations. Each page of text has bright color illustrations by Harrison Cady. One of a series of Burgess books beginning with The Neatness of Bobby Coon. VG: name erased from front endpapers with a slight amount of abrasion; pages very nice; illustrations beautiful, especially the center double-page spread; covers show slight wear, with a small abraded area in lower left corner ofback cover; spine and edges rubbed.

Dutton, NY, 1941. First edition of a relatively scarce Margot Austin title. This is a review copy, with the notice attached to the front free endpaper by a paper clip (indentations from the paper clip are visible on the fixed endpaper and on the title page). Square octavo, VG-, no dust jacket--edges are rough, corners are bumped, and a small dent is visible at the top of the back cover. Pages are clean, story is a page-turner.

Wrappers darkened, worn, and chipped, including large triangular chip at lower right corner on front (about 3x2 inches). Lightly bumped at bottom near spine, slightly affecting pages. Text in German. 206 pages, uncut.

Octavo in wraps, 152 pp. Published in Hebrew as Koortov Shel Mavet, translated into English by Louis Williams. This novel takes place in September of 1973, but no date is given on copyright page. A glance at the volume shows it to be strangely prophetic of 9/11, not only because of the title, but also because of the cover illustration: a jet taking off with a rising sun with an Arab face in the background. The back cover presents a brief synopsis which also seems prophetic: "Beware the Ides of September. In the Middle East, a battle rages, a battle that could be the opening of World War III. The victories are incomplete and the gains temporary. It is a battle that lets no man remain indifferent." The novel is a tale of international intrigue and terrorism, framed by a crash of an airliner at the beginning and the invasion of Israel by Arab forces at the end.
