French Monarchy. Various Locations., 1686 Book size about 6 1/2 by 8 inches with some 737 pages. Bound in full leather with gilt spine lettering and decoration. The book is a compilation of some 70 French Royal edicts and other related proclamations beginning from 1686 and continuing to about 1729. The most common forms included are Edit Du Roy (10), Edit De Son Altesse Royale (21), Declaration De Son Altesse Royale (11), Ordonnance De Son Altesse Royale (7). Two proclamations concern the Funeral arrangements for two Monarchs of this period. Another concerns the growing of tobacco. There are two Harangues of 'Son Altesse' and 'Madame Royale'. Group of some 70 blank pages are provided at the rear and nine of these contain handwriting. All printing and writing is in the French language. I assume these forms were trimmed to fit the book size; two of them have some text loss which is saved in the book as two thin strips laid-in. The Triptych. NY. 1924. Limited Edition #37/99 Book size about 7 1/2 by 7 1/2 inches with unnumbered pages (Total of 34 leaves with 28 of those printed on one side only). Bound in hand colored tan paper covered boards with cream cloth spine. Illustrated throughout with hand colored images of penny toys. Book of rhymes about penny toys--a bit whimsical, a bit humorous. Reminiscent of some of those English children's books of the late 1800's with their nonsensical rhymes. The author (Who wrote several other books--including the subjects of miniature books, miniature Bibles, bookplates, etc.) amassed a major collection of children's books (Later donated to a library) and was a driving force in miniature books of the early 20th century. I have noted that the other two contributors mentioned by initial only at the front of the book have been identified as William Jordan and Jay Chambers. Thomas Burnside. Dublin, Ireland, 1792 Book size about 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches with some 435 pages + 17 page Appendix + eight page Index. A superbly rebound copy of the extraordinarily scarce John Reeves book: 'A History Of The Law Of Shipping and Navigation', published in Dublin in 1792. Rebound in modern full calf with marbled end papers, raised bands, boxed maroon spine label and blind tooled raised band lines. Book contains information on law relating to the English Colonies in North America here and there throughout but is primarily concerned with the history of English maritime law. Readers of the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey-Maturin sea series will remember all the problems Aubrey had with English maritime law. Exceedingly scarce. Pasadena/Altadena, California., 1951 A 32 volume set of this important Theosophist magazine consisting of a complete run of issues beginning with Volume 1, Number 1 (1951) and ending with Volume 30, Number 10 (1981). Plus a book of Special Issues and an Index for issues from October, 1951 to September, 1971. Uniformly bound in gray pebbled cloth with gilt lettering each book is about 6 1/2 by 9 inches with the number of pages varying from book to book. Exceedingly scarce as a complete run it is even difficult to compile a small group of individual issues. I showed a representative sample of the books in the photos. Plates included are: Mt. Joliet, fossil footprints, Rock Fort and colored geological sketch (Lead mines). Printed on thin fragile paper. One of the key works for those interested in the study of Missouri (And other Mississippi River locales including southern Illinois). AN EX-LIBRARY BOOK WITH MARKINGS BUT NO POCKET. One plate (Mt. Joliet) laid-in loose at the front and with considerable loss around the edges; several pages with tiny edge tears; book begins with the Joliet plate and title page; free end paper missing. Dodd, Mead & Company. NY., 1924 Rarest of the rare--a complete set of the Patty books all in original dust wrappers and all published by Dodd, Mead & Company (The original publisher). Each book about 5 1/2 by 7 1/2 inches. Each bound in bright blue cloth with dark blue lettering and with a circular color pictorial head and shoulders portrait of Patty on the front cover. Books are publisher dated on the title page as follows: eight in 1927; one in 1926; eight in 1924. Eight books have a frontis illustration on glossy paper--remainder of books with no illustrations. All have a previous owner inscription at the front dated in 1927 or 1928. Some lucky young girl got these as a set over a two year period from a loving aunt. It is difficult enough to find any of the Dodd, Mead editions in decent shape with a dust wrapper but to find the complete set in matching covers and wrappers is almost unheard of. Leavitt & Allen. NY. No date on title page; copyright page date 1850., 1850 Blue cloth with blind stamped illustration and decoration on the front and rear covers. Gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. Unpaginated (Some 66 pages). Book size is about 4 1/2 by 6 inches. Book format is an illustration at the top of each page with nursery rhymes below. In the Preface, the Editor 'claims to be a direct descendant of the original 'Mother Goose' and to have all her original manuscripts and corrections in his possession. Thus, this book is to be considered the definitive edition. The illustrations are by an artist who was a contemporary of 'Mother Goose' and were presented to her shortly before her death. They have never before been published'. I have edited the foregoing a bit but, the gist is, the Editor (unnamed) claims this to be from his family and to be authentic. Lumbermen's Oil Company. Beaumont, Texas, 1902 Statement (Annual Report) of the Lumbermen's Oil Company of Beaumont, Texas dated September 1, 1902. Folded size is 3 1/2 by 6 inches with a total of four pages. Printed on cheap thick paper. A remarkable document from the great Spindle Top oil field, one of the earliest major Texas oil finds. The company apparently owned a fifty by seventy foot section of the field as well as other properties in the area and had one four inch well. Capitalized at $250,000 the company had $44.96 cash on hand. A very, very early document from the beginning of the Texas oil business. Undoubtedly exceedingly scarce--probably rare--and possibly unique. Paper is faded and chipped with small tears. But all the text is here with no loss--amazing that this fragile item survived. Chicago Examiner. Chicago., 1910 Book size about 9 by 12 inches with some 36 pages. Bound in ribbon tied tan wraps with brown lettering. Illustrated with photos on every page totaling some 80 or so. Each photo shows a doll (Or dolls) and the name of the donor (For Example: 'Gift of Mrs. William Randolph Hearst'). The catalogue represents donations 'For the Benefit of the Christmas Charities Fund of The Chicago Examiner -- Held in the Rose Ball Room, La Salle Hotel December 10, 12 & 13'. And since this was a charitable benefit held by some of the wealthiest people in Chicago and beyond the dolls shown are nearly all very costly. An overview of the finest dolls made at the time. From what I can gather with my limited German this is a recipe book for various agricultural and farming methods. Only copy I could find available was in a German National Library. Rolla Printing Company. Rolla, Missouri., 1938 Book size about 5 1/2 by 7 inches with some 108 pages. Bound in black cloth over thin cardboard with red lettering and decoration. Number 85 in Ramon Adams' bibliography of Outlaws ('Six Guns and Saddle Leather'). Adams notes that this is the only book he knew of covering the history of Bill Wilson. Frontis drawing of Wilson; numerous in-text or full page historical photos throughout. Spine cloth separated three inches at rear cover fold; Covers creased top to bottom at center; previous owner name and date(1939) in pencil inside front cover; other light wear. Historical Bulletin No. 3 as published by The Concord Society of Detroit, Michigan. 'The Concord Society was founded for the purpose of investigating and disseminating facts concerning the part played by Americans of German ancestry----'. This pamphlet is concerned with those troops of German ancestry who were members of General George Washington's body guard during the Revolutionary War. A scholarly study which includes names of the troops and events. A seldom seen study of early American history. Very scarce. Book size about 6 by 9 inches with pages numbered 571 through 935 plus eight page Index for the year 1910. Important literature relating to the struggle against the forces pushing Prohibition. Much mention of the Anti-Saloon League, WCTU, and other organizations trying to legally prohibit the sale of liquor. Contains news of the struggle at local, state and Federal levels. You can feel the fear of the liquor distributors in these issues. They were doing everything in their power to stop these people who were trying to take away their livelihood. Very, very scarce. Bound in full calf with gilt lines on the spine (No lettering on the covers). This is the 'Eighth Edition, In Which Are Inserted The Discoveries Of Captain Parry In The Arctic Regions, Etc. Etc.'. Book includes seven fold-out maps: The World, Europe, British Isles, Asia, Africa, North America, South America. In addition to the usual geography information there are six pages of information on Arctic exploration including the search for the fabled Northwest Passage, loss of ice in Greenland, government bounties for reaching certain Arctic goals, viewing the Aurora Borealis, etc. The Greenland ice loss was calculated at 18,000 square miles opening up the east coast of Greenland for the first time. Illustrated on each page by Frances Brundage in black/white to accompany the portion of the famous Christmas poem on that page. An extraordinarily scarce 'Night Before Christmas' book. A punch-out book with pages necessary to assemble 15 scale models. Illustrated in color on every page. Models include seven airplanes, four ships, a locomotive, a modern tank, reconnaissance car, anti-aircraft gun (Listed on the front cover--check my photo). Published just before we got involved in World War Two. Very slight wear; some separation of the punch items on three pages. A clean, unmarked, unused book in remarkable condition. Also includes all previous Ordinances from the city incorporation in 1870 to date of this book. Very scarce book giving a glimpse of the early governance of a central Kansas city.
