Eleven issues (all published) bound in two volumes. 59 pochoir colored plates by renowned illustration artists Georges Barbier, Umberto Brunelleschi, Taquoy, Vallee, Bonotte, Domergue, Wegener, Stab and others. Most pages with in-text color illustrations including head- and tail-pieces. All eleven original printed wrappers with colored and silver design by Brunelleschi are included. In the extremely scarce dust jacket that is identical to that of the first edition, Although second edition stated, this is actually the second impression published from the first-edition type. "mount in" on page 41 was not corrected. No 661 of 1000 copies printed. Both book and dust jacket are in very fine, almost mint condition. Mostly unopened. Stitched in original stiff card with marbled wrappers. Printed title label in a ruled border pasted to front cover. Finely printed on laid-paper with deckle edge, 4pp. (title page, 2 page poem, 1 blanc page). Alan Anderson, owner of the Tragara Press, was impressed with a short story by Ted Hughes and asked if he had anything else that he could print. Hughes suggested to print a poem by his wife, Sylvia Plath. Anderson printed around 60 copies of 'A Winter Ship'. Plath requested the removal of her name from the title, writing in June of 1960: "We thought we'd like the date, place and press in upright letters, as on the other proof, and my name deleted - as I'll write that on the inside myself, with Christmas greeting too. In the original first edition dust jacket with '18s NET' on front flap. Wrapper design by Thomas Simmonds. The binding is square and tight with sharp corners. Top edge with foxing spots as is often the case, fore edge with a few spots. Pages are bright and clean with no marks or inscriptions. The dust jacket is bright with vivid colors, lightest wear and one small, closed tear to front cover. This is the 1963 reprint of the first edition with ' First published 1963' and 'Reprinted 1963' on the copyright page. Book, contents and dust jacket are exactly the same as the first edition with all first edition points. Probably only 'reprinted' for marketing reasons, the first edition of an estimated 2000 copies did not sell very well. 258 pp. 19 x 13 cm. A very attractive collectible copy. .

This is copy number 530 from the Cercle d'Art edition that was limited to 666 copies. There were also editions printed by Abrams and Schunemann of 666 copies each. Sheet size: 32.7 x 25 cm.
