Kingston: Printed by Stevenson and Aikman, [1802]. 12mo (in 6s), 149 x 92 mms. pp. [iv], 189 [190 - 191 continuation of Index, 192 note and errata, 193- 204 tables, followed by lower corner of one leaf, followed by 11 leaves of notes mostly in pencil, and mostly of names, with occasional sums and calculations, bound in contemporary wallet style sheepskin, with gilt borders on covers, and the name in purple ink of "William Bowyer/ Woollard/ 1887/ June 8," with more purple ink on the title-page and on the verso of the preceding leaf. One of the publishers, William Aikman fled from America during the 1776 Revolution and set up business with another refugee, David Douglass. Thomas Stevenson joined the firm in 1796. One of the most striking features of their almanacs was the use of Hebrew type, page 15 being a "Kalendar Of Months, Sabbaths, and Holidays, which the Hebrews or Jews observed and keep, for the years 5562 and 5563 of the Creation." Folio, 273 x 164 mms., pp. [xviii], 423 [424 -432 index], [45 Epigrams, 46 blank], engraved title-page with vignette portraits of Ariosto and Harington, a partially clothed female figure to the left of the title (with a rather rude putto), centurion on right, 46 full-page engraved plates, tail-pieces, printed in double columns, with continuous text and registration going from the end of the twelfth book to the beginning of the fourteen (superstition rules), with very fine, well-inked impressions of the plates, bound in 18th calf, gilt border on covers, joints very skilfully restored and richly gilt spine with black morocco label laid down. Large, thick follio, 335 x 218 mms., pp. [xliv], 1071 [1072 colophon], marginal annotation on recto of aa2, contemporary tawed pigskin, with a fleur-de-lys in centre panel, with binding date of 1549 just visible in central panel, the date is also just visible in a tiny trapezoid 42 mms. from the top front cover near the spine, a border in blind of what appears to be images of juveniles, and another outer border with images of saints, vellum working clasps, with brass endings, almost certainly a Wittenberg binding; binding soiled but would probably repay cleaning, ex-library, with library stamps (Leabharlann Lair, na mBraithre Criostai, which I think was/is a monastery in Maynooth, Ireland) on recto of front free end-paper and on last leaf, with small rectangular bookseller's ticket of J. Romae: Sumptibus Venantii Monaldini Bibliopolae in via Cursus, 1753. FIRST EDITION. Folio, 435 x 305 mms., 7 preliminary leaves, followed by lxxiv pages, with engraved frontispiece, title-page in red and black, and thirty-three engraved plates (15 folding), engraved tail-pieces, contemporary vellum; small paper flaw in one plate, but a fine copy of these superbly engraved plates. These engravings (by Carlo Cesi) of the frescoes in the Palazzo Farnese that Carracci (1560 - 1609) are the result of Carracci's being "recommended by the Duke of Parma, Ranuccio I Farnese, to his brother, the Cardinal Odoardo Farnese, who wished to decorate the piano nobile of the cavernous Roman Palazzo Farnese. In November–December of 1595, Annibale and Agostino traveled to Rome to begin decorating the Camerino with stories of Hercules, appropriate since the room housed the famous Greco-Roman antique sculpture of the hypermuscular Farnese Hercules. Birmingham, Printed for the Author, by Pearson and Rollason..., 1787. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 212 x 129 mms., pp. xvi, 464 [465 - 468 adverts], recent full plum calf, gilt spine, red morocco label; some foxing of text. Inscribed on title-page, "The Author to / Bellas & Latitia / 1801", apparently in the hand of the first-named of the two recipients. Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) published these discourses -- mostly sermons and essays on theological matters -- while living in Birmingham, and in them engaged in a certain amount of controversy about monotheism. He must have had a copy of the book with him in his home in the village of Northumberland, Pennsylvania, as it was there that he was in 1801. The first recipient named in the inscription is Priestley's young friend and sometime amanuensis Hugh Bellas (1780-1863), later in life an attorney-at-law, and the lawyer for the local Unitarian congregation. The translation from the Italian text of N. du Bois into French by Leoni, with the 1715 notes of Inigo Jones incorporated into the text makes this one of the most interesting and formidable editions of I Quattro Libri by Andrea Palladio (1508 - 1580), published in 1570. Small 4to, 173 x 138 mms., pp. [viii], 23 [24 blank], ex-library to judge from the binding, which is probably from the 195s, title-page soiled, , a few leaves shaved at head with loss to headlines or pagination, occasional ink staining, more extensively to C4 with some words obscured and some resultant holing, quarter brown morocco, binder's cloth, title blocked in gilt on front cover This work by Mary Evelyn, 1665-1685 was first published by R Bentley in 1690, with a preface by the authors' father, John Evelyn. Joan K. Perkins in her entry in ODNB of Mary's mother Mary Evelyn [née Browne], said of her that " the sixth of eight children born to John and Mary Evelyn, is credited with authorship of Mundus muliebris, a brief satire in tetrameter couplets on fashionable women's clothing, accoutrements, and behaviour, first published in 1690. Presso Giovanni Elsevier. 1656. 12mo, 128 x 73 mms., pp. [xxii], 84, contemporary or slightly later embroidered binding, with crowns in silver threads against a dark brown background, all edges gilt, with the late 17th or early 18th century bookplate of Charles-Louis Texier, comte d'Hautefeuille or possibly his father, Jacques Etienne Louis Texier, comte d'Hautefeuille on the front paste-down end-paper; no free end-papers, slight worming of lower front cover of binding, remnants of ties, but in general in very good shape for an embroidered binding. Tasso (1544 - 1595) composed Aminta in 1573 for a garden party at the court of Ferrara. "The play has a pastoral theme, and is set in the time of Alexander the Great. The characters are shepherds and nymphs. The story is about Aminta's love for the beautiful nymph Silvia, who does not return his attentions and prefers hunting. She risks rape at the hands of a Satyr but Aminta saves her; however, again she flees from him.… Leer más

c. 1910. The exterior dimensions are 760 x 620 mm, while the oval portrait itself is 560 x 460 mm. The original painting by Robert Edge Pine (1730-1788) was auctioned at Christie's South Kensington on December 2, 2008, as lot 59. It sold for £103,250, which was, quite literally, more than twenty times the auctioneer's estimate. One point of interest is that Christie's described their painting as showing Thrale as having grey eyes; and they are definitely grey in the Christie's portrait. In the present painting -- copy or otherwise -- Thrale's eyes are hazel. The Pine painting was engraved for the European Magazine in 1786� The online catalogue of the National Portrait Gallery, London, has no reproduction of the original Pine painting, and no reproduction of the present portrait. The NPG does, however, have a reproduction of the engraved portrait that appeared in the European Magazine in 1786, but they do not give Pine as the original artist; instead they attribute… Leer más

[?Philadelphia] [c.1800]. These embroideries are possibly the work of Samuel Folwell (1764 - 1813), the American miniaturist, silhouettist, engraver, and hair worker. In any case, they are very much in the style of needlework and embroideries produced by Folwell and his wife, Ann Elizabeth Gebler Folwell. In the first embroidery, Emma sits contentedly under a tree holding a garland of flowers, with a basket of flowers at her feet. She wears a long flowing white gown, and her long curly hair (very much in the style of the 1790s) is decked out with flowers. In the background is a road and gate leading to a farm house. The second picture is a fine example of the iconography of mourning so popular in America after the death of George Washington in 1799. In this one, a forlorn woman sits under a tree in front of a tombstone which reads "In Memory of Emma Corbett." There are withered and dead leaves around her and in the background is a house with a thatched roof. Both textiles have some… Leer más

Lipsiae Sumptibus Siegfried Lebrecht Crusii 1798, 1803, 1803, 1816. 4 volumes, Royal 8vo, 228 x 127, beautifully bound (by John Clarke, the partner of the binder Francis Bedford), with stamp in blind on lower margin of front paste-down end-paper in volume one) in contemporary full purple morocco, with the gilt emblems of the Reverend Theodore Williams (d. 1827) on each cover, spines gilt, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, and with the bookplate of the distinguished British book collector Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785 - 1861) on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume. A clipping from either an auction house or a bookseller, probably around 1960, has this note "The best and most complete of all the editions. It was undertaken with such a quantity of valuable materials as no critic had ever possessed, and is published with unprecedented care and industry; the critical marks are so happy and the explanations so apposite that it is generally considered the chef d'oeuvre of… Leer más

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), pp. [vi], 36, 19th century half calf, marbled boards, red leather label; corners a bit worn but a very good copy. In his survey of matters infernal, the historian of ideas Damian Frank Pearson notes in his study that George Craighead and another thinker, Tobias Swinden, contended that hell must be in the Sun: "Tobias Swinden (1726) and George Craighead (1748) both argued that Hell could not be in the earth as there would be no room for all the dead and not enough air and fuel to keep the fires burning for eternity, and Hell had been created to confine the fallen angels after the revolt in heaven. The location of Hell could not be in the earth. Their place for Hell was within the confines of the Sun, with the sun-spots being the gateways to the eternal fires.
