Descripción:
n.p., 1988. Fine. Ink sketch, signed "R. Crumb" with the date of [19]88. Image measures 8" by 7", framed to 15.75" by 13.75" A unique work of art, and to our knowledge never published. This original ink sketch of Bukowski by R. Crumb links one of the "preeminant underground cartoonist with one of the preeminent writers of his time, whose work provided a link between the Beat generation and the 1960s counterculture and beyond." "Crumb worked with Bukowski several times in the 1980s, illustrating two short books, 'Bring Me Your Love' and 'There's No Business', that were published by John Martin's Black Sparrow Press. Around the same time, Crumb produced three writers' portraits - Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs - for a series of posters (and later t-shirts) entitled 'Meet the Beats,' published by Water Row press. This portrait of Bukowski was reported to its previous owner as having been prepared for a second round of author portrait posters, but was never used" (n.b., quotes… Leer más

Descripción:
New York: Random House, 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. First printing, quarto size, [55 pp.], with publisher's dust jacket. Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991) will forever be remembered as the beloved "Dr. Seuss", creator of numerous stories for children. Often written as nonsensical lines in the tradition of the great Edward Lear, his stories resonate with both children and adults. The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, he won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958 for this book, "Horton Hatches the Egg". When asked by Mayzie the bird to keep her egg warm while she flys off on a vacation, Horton reluctantly agrees and guess what happens.... This the first appearance of Horton, who would appear again in Seuss's 1954 book, "Horton Hears a Who!" Horton the kind-hearted elephant would make a wonderful role model for all: "[h]e is very popular because of his big heart and respectful compassion, which makes him more humorous". At the end of the story, Horton's reward came… Leer más

One of 50 signed/numbered hardcover copies with original artwork, large octavo size, 119 pp., with prospectus. Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) was "a prolific underground writer who used his poetry and prose to depict the depravity of urban life and the downtrodden in American society. A cult hero, Bukowski relied on experience, emotion, and imagination in his work, using direct language and violent and sexual imagery" (n.b., from the web site of the Poetry Foundation). As much as he achieved popular acclaim during his lifetime, his reputation and following have only increased after his death. In addition to being an author, Bukowski also was an artist: he painted on 6" by 9" paper "with thick layers of acrylics, oil paint, watercolors, pastels, crayons, pens - whatever was at hand. New York and Cleveland: The World Publishing Company, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Carle, Eric. First printing, oblong quarto, 28 pp., in first issue dust jacket. Eric Carle (b. 1929) is known world-wide for this, his third book, which has been translated into more than 60 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies, garnering numerous awards along the way including the American Institute of Graphic Arts Award in 1970 and the Nakamori Reader's Prize in Japan in 1975; Carle was awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 2003 by the American Library Association and was a U.S. nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2010. Carle's style consists of using hand-painted tissue papers and creating a collage, which is then reproduced via offset colour lithography. This book, with its multiple die-cut pages as the caterpillar eats his way through various foodstuffs, created such a challenge for US printers that the publisher eventually found a printer in Japan.… Leer más

[Risbury, Herefordshire]: The Whittington Press, 2018. First and Limited Edition. Leather bound. Fine. No. 14 of 40 copies of the "A" edition with accompaniments (see below); folio size, 100 pp., in a leather-backed solander case. In his typical fashion, John Randle has done a masterful job presenting insights into the life of Vance Gerry with this extensive bibliography of his printed work. Vance Gerry (1929-2005) was one of California's least known and most accomplished printers, who operated his Weather Bird Press from 1967 to 2005. John Randle, publisher of "Matrix" and accomplished printer in his own right, gives Vance high praise: "Until his death in 2005 he produced a steady stream of the most understated, beautifully printed and ravishingly illustrated books from any private press, ever." Vance studied art at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and learned the art of storytelling at Walt Disney Productions where he was employed as a storyboard artist. Descripción:
1780. No binding. Near fine. van Rijn, Rembrandt. Single etching printed to recto only, plate margins: about 4.5" by 3.5" A late 18th-century restrike, likely by Claude-Henri Watelet (1718-1786) of Dutch master, Rembrandt van Rijn's (1606-1669) etching, "Abraham Caressing (Isaac) Benjamin". While producing a body of work that continues to be treasured 400 years after his lifetime, Rembrandt experienced a great deal of loss in his personal life, losing three children in infancy and his beloved wife, Saskia, after the birth of their fourth child - the only one to survive to adulthood. The look of quiet sadness in this etching on the face of Abraham perhaps echoes some of that loss experienced by Rembrandt, while the face of the child shows only joy at being so closely held by his father. Rembrandt's work varies greatly, an aspect that sets him apart from many of his contemporaries. His work included biblical scenes, such as that seen in this work, but was not limited in that respect. He worked in… Leer más

No. 10 of 30 de luxe copies, quarto size, 328 pp., signed by Marie Laurencin (twice). Kathleen Mansfield Murry (1888-1923), born and raised in New Zealand, moved to the UK at the age of 19 where she became a friend of modernist writers such as D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf; she died at the age of 34 from tuberculosis. This work is a collection of her short stories, wonderfully illustrated by Marie Laurencin (1883-1956), a French painter and an important figure in the Parisian avant-garde. She was a member of the circle which included Pablo Picasso and other cubists, and is known as one of the few female Cubist painters (n.b., above info from Wiki). The lithographs in this volume are more traditional, being lovely portraits of the characters evoking the deep emotions of the stories. ___DESCRIPTION: De luxe version bound in turquoise leather and signed by the… Leer más
