Paris: Simon Le Moyne, 1635. First Edition of the first Canadian flora and one of the earliest North American herbals. The author, Jacques Philippe Cornut, was professor of medicine at the University of Paris. Although he himself never visited New France, he was able to study specimens which were brought or sent back to France by explorers and Jesuits. Many were provided by Jean and Vespasien Robin who supervised the gardens of Henry IV and the garden of the Paris Faculty of Medicine, and from Pierre Morin and his family who owned several Parisian commercial nurseries. Eighty-six different species are described, thirty native to north-eastern America, a number of them for the first time. Among these is the Guernsey lily, so-named from its introduction into England some fifty years later when specimens were found on the island following the wreck of a ship lost en route from Cape Town with bulbs among the cargo (cfBlunt, The Art of Botanical Illustration, 1950). Most editions are present in the original bindins, and there are a few binding variants. Highlights include the 'General Description of Nova Scotia' (Halifax: 1825), ‘The Clockmaker 1st Series’ (Halifax: 1836), and 'Letter Bag of the Great Western' (Halifax: 1840). Also included are three autograph notes and some twenty-five items on Haliburton. Haliburton was the first Canadian author to acquire an international reputation, and the first colonial writer to be awarded an honorary degree by Oxford (1858). Born and educated in Nova Scotia, he was called to the bar in 1820, practised law in Annapolis, and in 1826 was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia. In 1829 he was appointed a judge of the Court of Common Pleas, and in 1841 he was promoted to the Supreme Court in Nova Scotia. He retired and moved to England in 1856.… Leer más

First Edition, Second Issue, with the corrected date on the title-page. Plumier made three separate expeditions to the Caribbean, in 1689, 1693, and 1695. On the first of these he accompanied physician Joseph Surian; on the last two he travelled alone as 'botaniste du roi'. He discovered, drew, and described hundreds of new species, and left behind over 6,000 detailed drawings of West Indian plants. Paris: De L'Imprimerie de la République, An VI-VIII [1798-1800]. First Edition of this account of the Second French Circumnavigation (after that of Bougainville in 1767-69) and the first French commercial expedition to the northwest coast of America, the only one prior to Camille de Roquefeuil's voyage of 1816-19. Eager to explore the lucrative fur-trading possibilities in the northern Pacific suggested to him by Nathaniel Portlock in 1788, Marchand enlisted the support of the Marseilles firm 'Maison Baux' to finance the expedition. Although the fur-trading venture was a failure, the voyage was of considerable significance for the history of geographical discovery in the northwest. Author Fleurieu developed and greatly augmented his primary sources, the accounts of the surgeon Claude Roblet and Prosper Chanal, second captain of the expedition. Account of an exploring expedition through Hungary, Wallachia (Romania) and Moldavia to southern Russia and the Crimea (Ukraine) in 1837 made by Russian capitalist and philanthropist Anatolii Demidoff in company with several French scientists, engineers, and savants. Denis Auguste Marie Raffet was appointed staff artist on the expedition. The appeal of the book was broad, as Raffet managed to capture the interest of "the military expert and the engineer, the captain and the simply curious like ourselves." "The wild scenery and exotic architecture of the region are displayed; cities and villages alternate with rivers, plains, and mountains. Hungarian, Tartar, and gypsy life is shown with a vivid command of "local colour". Perhaps no other narratives of French exploration in the interior of North America enjoyed as wide a popularity, or stimulated as much controversy and criticism among later scholars as Hennepin’s. A Recollet missionary, Father Hennepin came to New France in 1675, spending most of the next three years in parts of Quebec and at Fort Frontenac, present-day Kingston. A nice copy in modern limp vellum (lightly washed, some minor inconsequential marginal worming - partly filled in). First Edition of this important source on the Huron missions in Ontario. An Italian Jesuit missionary, Bressani came to Canada in 1642 and worked for two years among the Indians at Quebec and Trois-Rivières. In 1644, he requested and was granted permission to proceed to the far-distant Huron Missions on Georgian Bay. En route, he and his companions were attacked and imprisoned by a band of Iroquois, who cruelly tortured and mutilated Bressani, leaving him with only one whole finger on his right hand. Eventually he was sold by his captors to the Dutch, who assisted him in returning to France. First Edition of this elusive book, the earliest biography of François Xavier de Laval de Montigny [1623-1708], first bishop of Quebec (1674-88) and one of the most powerful and influential figures in seventeenth century New France. Ordained in 1647, Laval was in 1658 consecrated bishop of Petraea in partibus and appointed by the Pope apostolic vicar in New France. The following year he arrived in Quebec, which was to remain his home until his death. In 1674 he was consecrated bishop of Quebec and from 1663 he was a member of the Sovereign or Supreme Council.
