A very good tight clean copy, expertly recased. With a Christmas, 1876 gift inscription. The first printing was 5,000 copies, and by January, 1877, 9,879 copies had been printed and bound. Advance subscription orders called for a second printing before the day of publication, so even those very first buyers of this book stood only a fifty precent chance of getting a copy of the first printing. Bell, Alexander Graham. TELEPHONE. ROBERTS' OPERA HOUSE, APRIL 27, 1877... [Hartford: Alexander Graham Bell, April, 1877] Broadside flyer or ticket, 3 x 4 1/2 inches, on dark green (teal) paper. Two corners chipped, and one crease, but a remarkable survival for such an ephemeral piece printed on such poor quality paper. This small flyer, which may also have served as a ticket of admission, invited potential customers to come to Bell's first public demonstration of a long distance telephone system (or "exchange"). This historic demonstration was held in Hartford and New Haven with transmissions made over a "borrowed" telegraph line and an "operator" in Middletown making the system (or "exchange") connections. Up until this time phones had been leased in pairs, and the customer had to string their own line (usually between office and home) to the second phone; if they wished to be able to call a third party, yet another line had to be strung directly between the original caller and the third party, but… Leer más

Whitman, Walt. AS A STRONG BIRD ON PINIONS FREE AND OTHER POEMS. Washington, D. C: [S. W. Green for Walt Whitman] 1872. First edition. Original dark green cloth, gilt. Lightly rubbed, and minor foxing on end papers, else a very nice copy. Inscribed by Whitman on the front end paper: "Matthew Collins from his friend the Author." Below the inscription, someone, perhaps Collins, has scrawled "W. W." Very nearly a fine copy. Issued as a supplement a few months after the Washington, D. C. edition of LEAVES OF GRASS, this printing of seven poems is less often seen than his other editions of the 1870s. We have not been able to identify the receipient, but have found one person of this name whose age and locale might connect him with Whitman at this period --a 26 year old unmarried ice-wagon driver in Philadelphia (just across the river from Whitman's home in Camden), the sort of common working man celebrated by Whitman. Hawthorne, Nathaniel. TWICE-TOLD TALES. Boston: American Stationers, 1837. First edition, with 4pp. of ads at front and 12pp. at rear (copies are also found with 16pp. of ads at rear; no priority). Original faded old rose cloth, embossed with quatrefoil ornaments, gilt. Expertly rebacked preserving the original spine, else a very good tight copy with the usual foxing, and an 1839 ownership inscription. Neither BAL nor Clark record this combination of cloth color and embossed pattern. Stein, Gertrude. HAVE THEY ATTACKED MARY. HE GIGGLED. West Chester, Pa.: Horace F. Temple [1917] First edition, one of 200 numbered copies. Original red printed wrappers, uncut. Light wear two small chips, and slight offsetting of wrapper dye to first and last leaves of text, but a well-preserved copy of this scarce and fragile pamphlet. The "poem," a sort of free verse conversation, was a caricature of the art critic, Henry McBride, although Stein called it a "genre picture" and claimed the caricature was more generalized. Contains an essay on fashion by Raymond Mortimer. Lowinksy's fourteen color depictions of Roaring Twenties chic are classics; also includes his title-page and tail-piece color designs.

Illustrated by Arthur Hughes. Spine and corners worn, split in rear joint expertly closed, but a good copy of a book nearly impossible to find in the English first edition, and seldom found with the original binding intact in the American issue. A respectable copy of this classic children's fantasy that defies classification. It is clearly a religious parable, but not overly didactic. Original drab grey wrappers. Some chips to spine paper, else a nice copy in the original fragile binding, with owner's 1817 gift inscription on rear end paper. Although this poem is chock-full of quotable lines, the phrase "stone walls do not a prison make" is a line by Richard Lovelace that is often misattributed to Byron's PRISONER OF CHILLON. Worn, but a solid copy in the original publisher's binding. Twain arrived in New York City after leaving St. Louis and went to work as a type-setter at John Gray's firm on Monday, August 29, 1853 and stayed there until mid-October, when he left for Philadelphia. This long narrative poem is based on Hartmann von der Aue's treatment of a psycho-sexual German medieval romance.
