Extremely rare and in prime condition. Located in Paris. Complete set of 11 volumes of plates, the Imperial Edition published in Paris on the orders of Napoleon I, first by the Imprimerie Impériale, between 1809 and 1813, then by the the Imprimerie Royale from 1817 to 1829. 11 volumes, elephant folio (70 x 54 cm). The set is complete with 894 plates, of which 45 are coloured (32 in the Antiquités volumes and 13 in the Histoire Naturelle volumes). First 8 volumes (5 x Antiquités, 2 x Etat Moderne, 1 x Carte topographique) in a magnificent mid-19th century full-leather binding with elaborate gilding, made in England. The last 3 volumes (Histoire Naturelle) are bound in a modern full-leather imitating the first 8 volumes "à l'identique". All volumes have the edge of pages gilded on all three sides. The plates are in fine condition, with very limited foxing on a few plates only and limited to the edge. Prisse's Oriental Album is a visual documentary, in 30 magnificent folio tinted lithographs finished by hand, of the people, costumes and way of life in the Nile Valley, with commentary by the noted Orientalist James Augustus St. John. First trade edition of this beautifully illustrated survey of Egyptian "modes of life," with lithographic frontispiece portrait of botanist George Lloyd, to whom the work is dedicated, additional chromolithographic title page, and 30 large tinted lithographs finished by hand of contemporary Egyptian dress. Moderate foxing on the edge of about one third of the pages and plates, otherwise a splendid, clean copy. Language: English. Extremely rare, one of 200 copies only. Imprimerie Impériale, Paris, 1867. First edition. Elephant folio, viii & 87 plates, of which several coloured or tinted. Original half-leather, rubbed on edges, inside in fine condition, with only occasional spotting. Remarkable record of the ruins of this area, including the extraordinary palace of Sargon II at Dur-Sharrukin, modern Khorsabad. This monumental and splendid work was commissioned by the Emperor Napoleon III, from Victor Place who was the French Consul. It is a precious work, as most of the monuments described were sunk by pirates during their transportation on the Tigris river in the so-called "Al-Qurnah disaster". Language: French. Very rare complete set of 8 fascicles. Verlag von Ebner & Seubert, Stuttgart, 1846-1850. First edition. Folio. [2], 70 pages, 48 plates of which 33 are tinted lithographs by J. B. Kuhn of Munich, pictorial tinted lithographed title page, embossed blind stamps of Von Mayr and the publisher's initials on title page and below the plates. A near-fine set, all plates in excellent condition. 1 page of fasc. 1 has a small paper loss on bottom corner, not affecting the text. Some foxing on a few text pages and occasionally on the margins of the plates. Last plate of fasc. 8 is wrinkled on top corner. Text pages of fascicle 2 have a liquid stain on the binding fold not affecting the text. Plate VII has a 2 cm tear without loss of paper and not affecting the lithograph. Elephant folio (59.5 x 43 cm), [1 errata], 36 leaves [72 pp.,], 37 aquatint engravings hors texte, etched in sepia by Hilmey after drawings by Horeau, depicting 58 subjects including a frontispiece portrait of Mehemet Ali and a panorama of Cairo, each plate is accompanied by a two-page descriptive text with numerous wood engravings. Beautiful modern full leather, binding is new. Small blue ink stain on edge of title page and following 5 pages, frontispiece is a bit dustly, otherwise in splendid condition. Hector Horeau was trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts between 1819 and 1822, and was a student in the ateliers of E. Ch. Nepveu and F. Debret. From 1821, he first worked as an illustrator and amongst his commissions was drawing the plates for F. Cailliaud's "Voyage a Meroe (1826-7)". Binding half fawn mottled calf, flat back with gilt fillets with title in red leather gusset, corners, mottled edges. Pages VIII, 2 not numbered, 190, 2 not numbered with Errata. Engraved Frontispiece with original tissue. 6 unnumbered pages, frontispiece, viii & 190 pages, 2 unnumbered pages, large geographic map and 66 plates, some of them foldouts, all engraved in copper. Our copy is complete of the 3 "bis" plates, giving a total of 67 plates. The French painter Louis-François Cassas visited the Adriatic coast from Istria to Dalmatia in 1782 and his drawings were later used in Lavallée's work. It gives a wealth of information on this reagion at the end of the 18th century, in both architecture and archaeology. Elephant folios, contemporary half-leather, boards are laterally damaged (partial loss of paper). Unlike in most copies, the text volume is bound separately and has its sheets cut into columns, while the text part normally bound together with the plates has 3 columns of text side by side on every text page. Moreover, the sheets are not logically ordered. A handwritten list at the end of the volume, probably by the hand of James Henry Breasted himself, attempts to correct this.
