Born in 1854 in Bergen, Norway, Rasmus Rasmussen was an accomplished sailor by the time he signed on to the ship Debora in 1879 headed to Aldabra, an atoll in the Indian Ocean where the group on board hoped to establish a Norwegian colony based on the teachings of Hans Nielsen Hauge, a Norwegian minister. Before reaching its destination, however, the expedition ended prematurely in Madagascar, with some aboard the Debora remaining there, while others settled in the British colony of Port Natal (Durban) . One of the South's early preservationists, Alice Huger Smith collaborated with her father, historian D. E. Huger Smith, providing architectural drawings for two important publications: Twenty Drawings of the Pringle House (1914) and The Dwelling Houses of Charleston, South Carolina. The contents are housed in original hinged 16- x 18-inch paper-covered boards with moderate to heavy smudging, mostly in area of three slots for closure, although ribbon or cardboard for these slots is now missing. H. P. Griffith,. G/NONE. 1911. Hardcover. Hardback first edition of reminiscences signed by Civil War Captain Harrison Patillo Griffith (1837-1928) of Laurens County, South Carolina. Furman-educated, Griffith served with Company E, 14th South Carolina Regiment, and was badly wounded both at the Battle of the Wilderness and at Gettysburg. After the war he returned to Woodruff, South Carolina, ran a small store for a while, and served as a school teacher. Later, he was president of Limestone College. The author of "Life of Landrum" and "Life and Times of John Ezell," Griffith recounts in this surprisingly well-written volume his war experiences at Chancellorsville and his regard for Henry Timrod, Charleston, South Carolina, poet, among a number of other subjects.
