Descripción:
South Dakota, 1893. Very good. 6¾" x 11¼". Steel post binder with contemporary semiwraparound enclosure made of thick wood boards, held together with a calf backstrip. 25 thick card leaves, most of which are interleaved with typing paper with a total of 50 albumen photographs glued down, one per page. Photos measure 4 3/8" x 7 5/8" and 39 are captioned in the negative, though a few are hard to read. Album very good: moderate wear, leaves a bit wavy; photos generally near fine or better. This is an album of large photographs depicting the Sioux at the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation (RSIR, also known as the "Rosebud Agency") in South Dakota. The album also features some of the early work of an important photographer who dedicated his life to documenting the Rosebud Sioux, John Alvin Anderson. According to an article by Claes H. Jacobson, Anderson emigrated from Sweden at the age of one in 1870, and his family eventually settled, in 1883, in Sparks, Nebraska, close to the border of South Dakota… Leer más

Mostly Georgia, 1984. Very good +. Eight commercial photo albums with mylar-covered gummed leaves containing a combined 969 color photos + large embroidered riding scarf, four jacket patches and a painted, heavily used helmet. Most photos measure approximately 3½" x 5" to 4" x 6" and around fifteen percent or more are captioned on versos. Generally very good plus or better, one of the albums good only due to water damage, a couple of albums a bit grubby as well; photos generally near fine or better. This is a collection of nearly 1,000 photographs and a few other items compiled by an outlaw biker from Georgia. Someone self-identifies in one of the albums, and there's a pistol license as well as an addressed envelope with the same name, but we can't be sure he's the compiler. At least two albums are from 1976 and 1977, and a lot of the photos in those albums involve members of The Outlaws; the other six albums, as well as the patches and helmet, focus on the Remaining Few South Georgia (RFSG)… Leer más

[San Antonio, Texas]: China War Relief Association of San Antonio, 1938. 8½" x 7". Initially stapled wrappers, now lacking staples. Pp. [104]. Good: front wrapper heavily chipped affecting title characters; first four pages also heavily chipped costing some text but not significantly affecting readability; 2 inch tear to four leaves; scattered small tears or chips not affecting text; lacks a rear wrapper but we do not know if it was issued with one. This is a rare work created by an even rarer population: Chinese residents of San Antonio, Texas in the late 1930s. It's a relic of China's "national salvation movement" and the organization that created it, the China War Relief Association of San Antonio (CWRASA). The CWRASA in turn arose from a refined system of Chinese organizations in America which supported China in resisting Japanese aggression. Starting in the early 20th century, Chinese in the United States would band together to denounce Japanese aggression towards China, as well as express… Leer más

[Philadelphia, PA]: [Pan African Federation Organization], 1978. Very good. 11¼" x 9¼" black vinyl commercial three-ring album. Pp. [185] + 5 pages of handwritten quiz questions laid in. Very good: album chipped at two corners and lightly mottled; some scattered small stains and light edgewear; some pages printed lightly or crooked, as issued; one page loose at bottom ring and a few reinforced at an earlier date. This is a binder documenting an obscure course in African and Black American history that was produced by a little-known Philadelphia group, the Pan African Federation Organization (PAFO). The materials reveal a deeply moving effort to advance Black Americans' knowledge of African culture, replete with an attending student's copious underlining and manuscript notations. There is very little online evidence to be found on PAFO, which was incorporated in Philadelphia in 1978. Two sources reported people earning a "bachelor of historical education" from PAFO, the group gave a… Leer más

Various places in the South Pacific, 1927. Very good. 6¼" x 8½". Leather over flexible card with two-hole punched leaves, lacking original rivets and later string tied at the lower hole. 86 pages with 216 black and white photographs inserted into corner mounts + a hand-drawn line map; approximately 30 photos were commercially produced. Nearly all photos are captioned with narrative descriptions on album pages, the album as a whole containing approximately 4000 words; many with brief captions in the negative or on photo versos as well. Album very good with moderate wear; photos generally very good or better; occasional smudging of captions resulting in the loss of some words but rarely impacting overall understanding of any particular description. This is a photo album filled with well composed and heavily captioned photographs which document numerous locales in the South Pacific and their local populaces. It was compiled by a member of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy while touring the… Leer más

Generally Michigan, 1910. Very good. Includes 210 card-mounted photos and 14 tin types; most are loose; 71 are CDV or smaller, 139 are cabinet cards or larger-approximately three quarters of the subjects are identified with names. Also included are four manuscript books and some ephemera. Generally very good: light to moderate wear; albums and manuscripts with faint odor. This is a collection of photographs, with some manuscripts and ephemera, documenting descendants of Lorenzo Mudge, who, along with his first wife Emeline was the first to settle in Castleton, Michigan. The collection was probably compiled by Lorenzo's daughter, Mina or one of Mina's children. It also includes photographs of Mina's extended family after she married William L. Holmes, a preacher, in 1890. Mina, William and two of their young children are seen in the photo at right and there are at least three portraits of Mina in the collection. Per an included proof sheet with a biography of Lorenzo Mudge from History of Allegan… Leer más

Some photos are captioned as explained below. Album about good, with text block fully detached from boards which are still attached to each other at the spine; pages with moderate dust soiling and scattered staining; a few windows torn; photos generally very good. This is a family photo album compiled by a Mollie Hargrove of Harrison County, Texas. Mollie was born around 1846 in Franklin County, North Carolina and as of the 1850 census she had moved to Texas. Marshall, Texas, 1941. Very good. 11" x 8½". Fourteen leaves of typescript typed recto only and stapled at corner. Pp. 13, approximately 4,000 words. Very good: light wear and a few small stains to edges; lightly toned. This is the text of a speech made by an African American HBCU president, M.W. Dogan, to a Dallas high school for "History Week." The speech contains historical facts as well as personal recollections of both well- and lesser-known accomplished Black Texans. Mathew Winfred Dogan was born in Mississippi in 1863. He served on the faculty of Rust University and Central Tennessee College before becoming president of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas in 1896. Wiley College, the oldest HBCU west of the Mississippi River, was founded by the Freedmen's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1873. Dogan was Wiley's seventh president, but only its second Black one, and held his position for 46 years, the longest tenure of any Wiley president. Under his watch, the school's faculty… Leer más

Omdurman, Khartoum and surrounding areas in Sudan, 1927. Good. 9¼" x 14½". Steel two ring binder with faux leather flexible card covers. 56 pages with 305 black and white photographs adhesive mounted. Photos measure from 1¼" x 2" to 4¾" x 9", with the average around 3" x 4". 217 are captioned, though many are faint and ten are probably unreadable. Album good: front cover and all leaves detached; photos generally very good or better. This album depicting Sudan in the mid-1920s was compiled by an unknown member of the British military who was there to assist in training the newly created Sudan Defence Force (SDF). It's filled with exceptional imagery of Sudan and its native peoples taken not long after political turmoil and violence in the area led to a drastic shift in Great Britain's approach to the country. After World War I, anti-British sentiment in Egypt leached into Sudan. This led Great Britain in 1920 to create plans to replace Egyptian officials, officers and troops in Sudan with their… Leer más

Savannah, GA: The Morning News Print, 1888. Good. 8¼" x 6". Green cloth over boards, title gilt. Pp. [5], [A]-E, [6], iv-v, [blank page], 360. Good: Ex-library with remnants of call number to spine, bookplate, due cards and embossed stamp on title page; moderately shaken, boards moderately worn with losses at spine tips, ffep heavily notated. This is another copy of Love's History with several outstanding associations. A partially obscured inscription on the front pastedown shows that this particular copy was presented by R.R. Wright to D.C. Suggs. Richard Robert Wright, Sr., who wrote part of the book's introduction, was born into slavery in Georgia in 1855 and was valedictorian of the first graduating class of Atlanta University, now known as the HBCU Clark Atlanta. Washington, D.C., 1942. Very good. Group of 16 pieces of ephemera measuring between 3¼" x 5½" and 11½" x 9". Most items very good: one with a tiny tear and moderate creasing at edges, not affecting any text; a few with light edge wear and a few small soil spots; some scattered light spotting. This is a fantastic group of speeches, ephemera and campaign materials related to the first woman to be elected to national office in the United States, Jeannette Rankin. Jeannette Rankin was born in 1880 near Missoula, Montana and graduated from the University of Montana in 1902. After a brief period as a social worker in Spokane, she moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington and became involved in the women's suffrage movement. She helped organize the New York Woman Suffrage Party, served as president of the Montana Women's Suffrage Association and as field secretary of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory: N.P., 1865. Very good. 19 7/8" x 15 ¾". Hand colored photograph with "Stonewall" written in pencil in large script on verso as well as a pasted-on sheet adhered to verso with handwritten ink inscription, "For Ollie E. Russell/Richard D. Russell/taken in Santa Fe. N. M. in 1865." Very good: lightly bowed at edges; light to moderate edge wear and dust soiling; 2" x 1.5" patch of staining, along with several smaller stains, none of which affect the subject. This is a large portrait of a Colorado frontiersman who died leading a group of homesteaders against a giant land company that attempted to evict them from the town they spent nearly 20 years building. Richard D. Russell was born in Canada in 1839, raised in Illinois, and ran away from home to California at the age of 16 where he became a rancher. He joined the First California Volunteers early in the Civil War, ultimately ending up at Fort Union in New Mexico, serving with the New Mexico Volunteers. While at Fort… Leer más

[Pine Bluff, Arkansas]: [Supreme Union of Ethiopia], 1917. Good. 6¼" x 4 5/8". Stapled wrappers. Pp. 23 + cipher card laid in. Good: light vertical crease to wrappers and all leaves, some internal soil spots; owner notation to title page; offsetting to pages where card laid in. This is an exceptionally rare ritual book for a little-known African American fraternal/benevolent society. While its text is fairly plain and standard for the genre, the book is evidence of one woman's effort to build a Black benevolent society and/or defraud its members. The book lays out instructions for conducting the rituals bestowing first, second and third degrees onto members of the Supreme Union of Ethiopia [SUR]. Using public records and newspapers.com this seemingly anonymous organization springs to life with a fascinating history. SUR was also known by at least two other names: the Ethiopian Union of the World [EUW] and the Grand United Order of Ethiopia [GUOE]. The group's Arkansas Articles of Incorporation… Leer más

Houston,Texas, 1929. Good. 39 loose leaves from a scrapbook, 60 pages with handwriting and/or ephemera. Scrapbook includes 17 items of ephemera, three photographs, seven items clipped from school publications and 14 news clippings. Good: edges of all leaves with insect predation. usually impacting text on a page; ephemera generally good or better, a few items fair due to losses. This is a wonderful scrapbook documenting a segregated high school in Houston, Texas that was compiled by a young woman, Eula Mae Cotton. It was compiled beginning just two years after Phyllis Wheatley High School (PWHS) was established in January 1927 and at a time when the school did not issue yearbooks, making this an important primary source. Eula Mae listed the names of all faculty and staff and secured at least 19 inscriptions from them. Several of these teachers later had schools named for them such as J.C. Sanderson and J.C. McDade. McDade wrote in the book, "in every moment of our lives we should be trying to… Leer más

String tied, cloth over wood. 47 leaves with 109 black and white photographs adhesive mounted rectos only with another 8 laid in; 57 photos measure 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" or larger, the rest a mix of sizes; several are captioned. Album very good with moderate wear; photos generally very good or better. This is a photo album with approximately 80 photographs showing Native Americans in the northernmost regions of the United States. It was compiled by a Caucasian man who appears to have been in the military, but he may have been a civilian employee who we think was there to work at the Point Barrow Long Range Radar Site as a dentist. The compiler is seen in at least 15-20 photos and we know his name, and that he was a dentist, due to an included award of merit he received for his service in Point Barrow. Point Barrow is one of the northernmost cities in the world; it's north of the Arctic Circle and today has a population of around 5,000. At the… Leer más

Michigan, 1982. Very good. 15" x 12". Full leather post binder. 128 pages with 423 photographs, 143 items of ephemera and a few dozen news clippings. Photos are in a range of sizes, most are in color and most are captioned. Album very good with light wear and lightly toned leaves; contents generally near fine or better. This is a massive scrapbook documenting international dance culture throughout the state of Michigan with an emphasis on belly dancing in the mid-1970s and early 1980s. It was compiled by Joan "Mikola" Burnham of Kalamazoo. Per the scrapbook, Joan was the wife of an attorney and started a small business around 1975, the Belly Dance Academy of Kalamazoo, (BDAK). While we don't know when Joan started in belly dancing, the book shows that when she decided to make a business of it, it took off immediately. Per the scrapbook, BDAK's first workshop was held March 13, 1976. That seminar also featured a famous dancer named "Süheyla" was held at a Kalamazoo YWCA and featured an Arab… Leer más

Generally good plus with light corner and edge wear and a bit of toning; one issue with a few inked notations to rear wrapper, another with a few dogears. This is a group of five issues of The Postal Alliance (TPA), the journal of an African American-established union, the National Alliance of Postal Employees (NAPE). NAPE was founded in 1913 at a meeting of Black postal workers held in Chattanooga. Since its founding, NAPE has invited all members regardless of race, sex, creed or religion and the union claims that it was the first in the federal service to do so.
