Seven volumes, 4to, bound in original full vellum with gilt decorated spine and leather labels, engraved frontispiece in volume one, contains a few plates and diagrams, edited by Faustino Arevalo. This is a remarkably fine set both internally and externally. Isidore Hispalensis (Isidore of Seville) was a Spanish encyclopedist and historian who became the Archbishop of Seville in 599. He acquired high renown for his successful administration of his office as well as for his numerous theological, historical, and scientific works. Profoundly versed in Latin and in Christian literature, his intellectual curiosity led him to condense and reproduce in encyclopedic form the fruit of his wide reading. Two volumes bound together in one, 376 pp. & 283 pp., front cover detached, mottled calf, all edges gilt, spine detached and partly missing, book is still bound together, contains 25 copper engravings (Kupfertafeln) by Radl, engraved by Geissler, Haldenwang, von Veith, Jury (?), and Duttenhofer, plus engraved title and folding table and folding map of Frankfurt by Frederich Wilmans in rear. Plates are, for the most part, bright with only minor foxing. Contains list of 349 subscribers who purchased a total of 413 copies, front pastedown has bookplate of Everhard Delius, title page has ink-stamp of B. B. De Montenegro, Aube (Orne). Views include many of Frankfurt as well as Bornheim, Hausen, Offenbach, Kronberg, Königstein, Epstein, Homburg, Wilhelmsbad, Soden, Wiesbaden, Langenschwalbach, Schlangenbad, Bad Ems. Pagination: pp. (24), 754, 16; full leather covered boards (scuffed) and re-backed in brown leather with title gilt-stamped in second of six compartments, raised bands, title page has 3" split near inner margin, light soiling, some browning along page edges, rear blank end page has corner piece torn away. There are several indicators of provenance - the title is signed E. M. MacFarlane, there is a bookplate from Saints Peter & Paul College in Oxford ("MacFarlane Bequest"), and there are two blindstamps from the Wigan Free Public Library; Short Title Catalogue R-1680. This work was reprinted in 1686 by another printer. Hugo Robinson died before his religious and secular history of the ancient world was published. First Edition, First Issue with the two-line printer's imprint on the copyright page repeated with an ampersand on page 422. Some shelf wear and rubbing at top and bottom of spine and corners; front hinge broken; some pencilled underlining and side-lining in text. Previous owner's signature (J. M. Davis) in pencil on rear end paper. Holmes served as chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court from 1899 until 1902. In 1902 he was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President Theodore Roosevelt, a position he held until his retirement in 1932.

First Edition . 12mo, full polished calf with red spine labels, pp. (4), (12), 248 (4); edges of pages browned, brittle & chipped, foxing throughout, tears on title and Preface pages repaired with paper, edges of pages browned and brittle. Short Title Catalogue H-1177. Very Scarce. Bookplate of Harry H. Whittingham on front pastedown with penned notation that this book was re-bound in 1954; penned notations on title page and last text pages (dated 1720) by an early owner, John Farrell - one such notation next to the H. (of R. H.) on the title mistakenly indicates the author was named Howell and another notation reads " Observe the character of the Commonwealth Parliament though from a Royalist".

London: G. & W. Nicol, 1834. First Edition . Polished Red Calf. Very Good/No Jacket as Issued. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Two volumes, bound in polished red calf with gilt-ruling on covers, spines have six panels with gilt floral devices in four of them; joints lightly rubbed, a.e.g., plates have moderate foxing and offsetting; contains 7 full page plates, 14 text illustrations and two folding pedigree tables. This copy belonged to William Courthope who carried the title Rouge Croix. Courthope was the editor of Debrett's Peerage and Baronetage between 1833 and 1839. He gave up editing in 1839 when he was appointed Rouge Croix. Volume I is inscribed to him by the wife of a friend and Courthope wrote, "These books were given to me after Norroy's death by his widow, the writer of the above / William Courthope / Rouge Croix Oct. 1857." Edition limited to 570 copies SIGNED by the illustrator Arthur Rackham; bound in limp vellum with light waviness, gilt lettering, contains four full-page color plates and numerous text illustrations and devices, a fine, bright, clean copy with a slightly worn original slipcase.

Philadelphia: Carey & Hart, 1843. First Edition . Very Good. First Edition, 8vo, bound in full-leather with gilt tooling on both covers and spine, a.e.g, 328 pages. Illustrated with eight engravings, all present. Binding has some wear at corners and edges, but is attractive with gilt tooling on a tan, age-toned leather, spine somewhat darkened; top of spine has 2 small splits and is worn, medium foxing throughout. The date, 1843, appears on the spine, on the printed title page and on the engraved title page; the date 1842 appears on the copyright page. A gift inscription appears twice - on the front free end page and the first blank reading, "Phebe T. Bussell's book / Presented by her father / Feb. 19, 1845." On pages 133 to 151 is the first appearance of Edgar Allan Poe's classic short story The Pit and the Pendulum.

Boston: C. W. Thompson & Co., 1901. First Edition . Tan Cloth Spine/Tan Boards. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Contains 62 pp. including Index, light foxing on end pages small stain on rear cover, minor wear. The songs in this volume were sung by the students at the Calhoun Colored School of Calhoun, Lowndes County, Alabama and compiled by Hallowell. The school was founded in 1892 by Charlotte R. Thorn of New Haven, Connecticut and Mabel W. Dillingham of Boston, Massachusetts. Hallowell (of West Medford, MA) wrote the Preface to this work that contains more than 50 songs with music and lyrics. Very scarce first edition of this important work.

Rust cloth, 250 pp., dust jacket has been trimmed and the individual panels glued on end page and half title, spine slightly faded, a few small stains on cover. SIGNED by V. Sackville West on the title page above her crossed out printed name (appears to have been crossed out by Sackville-West) in the same pen and INSCRIBED & SIGNED by V. Sackville-West's mother "To Sir John Hall (B?) from the author's mother Victoria Sackville" written on her yellow bookplate with her monogram and address 40 Sussex Square Brighton. The Burning Wheel was published in 1916 and is bound in beige wraps with paper labels on the front cover and the spine; small chip at base of spine, minor soiling to covers, a few small marginal tears to the rear cover (which exceeds the dimensions of the text pages). This is Number 7 of the "Adventurers All" series. The Defeat of Youth is bound in decorative green floral wraps with paper labels on the front cover and the spine. Spine slightly askew, joints rubbed, edges of covers have minor chipping and rubbing and have some darkening. Engraved bookplate on front pastedown.

Edinburgh: Archibald Constable and Co., 1814. Second Edition . 3/4 Calf/Marbled Boards. Very Good/No Jacket as Issued. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Second Edition of the first of The Waverley Novels published five weeks after the first edition with minor revisions and one new paragraph (volume II, p. 294), three volumes, calf spine and tips with marbled boards, engraved bookplates on front pastedowns of all three volumes, half-titles present in all three volumes; volume 3 has 1.5 inch split on front joint. This is an extra-illustrated (Grangerized) edition containing 17 engravings of portraits and views, minor wear. Tipped-in volume I is a facsimile of a holograph letter from Sir Walter Scott to bookseller Charles Tilt thanking him for his present of illustrations for Waverley. The original of this letter identified Scott as the author of Waverley, which was published anonymously.

First Edition, 16mo, red leather spine and tips, marbled boards and edges, 421 pp., a nice, tight, bright copy with only minor wear. Kenealy was a barrister and author. He graduated from Trinity College in1840 earned an LL.D in 1850. He was called to the Irish bar in 1840 and to the English bar in 1847. In April 1873 he became leading counsel for Orton, the Tichborne claimant, whose case he conducted in a manner so violent, and to himself so disastrous, that his mind may best be supposed to have become unsettled in the course of it. He made groundless imputations against witnesses and against various Roman Catholic bodies, insulted and trifled with the bench, and mercilessly protracted the case. The jury appended to their verdict a censure of the language he had employed. His conduct during and after the trial was brought before the professional tribunals. Set by hand and printed in two colours on Kelmscott hand-made paper at The Morland Press, and bound in full vellum September 1923." This is a nice, bright, clean copy.

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1886. First Edition . Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Contain b&w plates and text illustrations, 12 color plates (including frontispiece), 8 pp. ads in rear including one for Frackelton's Portable Gas Kiln, which she invented. Bound in decorative brown cloth with gilt title, engraved bookplate of J. Osgood Carleton on front pastedown, small water stain on lower margin throughout measuring about 3 ½" long x ¼" from the lower edge, minor soiling and a few small stains on cover, top and bottom of spine worn. This is very good copy of this scarce manual by a leader in the Arts and Crafts movement. It describes how to decorate china ware by hand, working with color, gold, acid or silver and also includes a section entitled "Photography on China". Susan Stuart Goodrich Frackelton (c.1851-1932) was a native of Milwaukee and studied landscape painting under one of Wisconsin 's earliest professional artists, Henry Vianden. Boston: F. Trifet. First Edition . Gilt Decorated Green Cloth. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Two volumes - Volume I ( 1867 - 1868, 92 pp. ) and Volume 2 ( 1868 - 1869, 112 pp. ). Volume I has been trimmed before binding and has narrower margins than Volume 2 and results in a slightly smaller volume. All edges are gilt, the covers are bright and the pages are tight and bright with no tears. Topics include American and forwign stamps and although the title suggests numismatics, there are very few references to that field of study in these two volumes. This is a very nice run of this scarce early stamp-collecting journal, which I believe went to four volumes in total.
