In 34 Volumes bound in full vellum gilt with Churchill's coat of arms in gilt to upper board of each volume. All page edges gilt. Presented in a custom-made wooden bookshelf. The Library of Imperial History went bankrupt before the projected run of 3,000 sets could be completed, so "the print run never exceeded 2,000 copies... " (Cohen). "The specifications were titanic: five million words in 19,000 pages, weighing 19 lbs, taking up 4.5 ft of shelf space. To achieve publication, 11 publishing houses in Great Britain, the United States and Canada released their individual copyrights in exchange for the promise that no other complete edition of Churchill works would be published until the expiration of international copyright in 2019" (Richard M. Jonathan Cape. 1970. First edition. DW. Jonathan Cape. Presentation copy from Vonnegut to Philip Oakes who reviewed his books for The Sunday Times and became a friend. On the front free endpaper, "FOR PHILIP OAKES - Kurt Vonnegut Jr. MARCH 19, 1970". The author did not let the ink dry long enough and some of the "Kurt" has offset on to the front pastedown! Loosely inserted is an envelope with a typed address to Mrr. [sic] Philip Oakes, THE SUNDAY TIMES... with a typed return address Vonnegut W. Barnstable, Mass. USA. With the word "AIRMAIL" and a long underline across in the author's own hand. The envelope contains a very friendly letter, on one side typed and signed by Vonnegut on his own headed writing paper. It thanks Philip for his helpful review. It also includes some very sarcastic remarks about Nixon and one of the local peace demonstrations to the end. Prelims, endpapers, edges and some margins of pages foxed. The book is housed in a two-fold inner card sleeve with title to spine which fits into publisher's slightly worn and sunned slipcase. To think that Picasso touched these pages!

1969. Irving Berlin. 1969. Large thick 4to. A complete alphabetical collection of Berlin's songs, presented as they came out with facsimiles of the original coloured sheet music covers. Bound in rexine binder, inside covers are marbled and all the page edges are gilt. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY TO ALAN JAY LERNER [Best known for Gigi, An American in Paris and My Fair Lady] "For Alan Jay Lerner with my deep admiration for his great talent. Irving Berlin 1969." The front cover has a coffee stain on it - this was, according to Liz Robertson, typical of Lerner, "Alan was like that. He never took care of anything properly." Front cover slightly bowed, small nick to spine. The contents are very clean. This is an utterly unique piece of musical theatre history. A presentation copy from one of the great American songwriters to another. Lerner had eight wives, two more than Henry VIII, this volume is from the collection of his last wife, Liz Robertson. Upper board embossed with blind-stamped diamond pattern with silver diamond to centre. Spine has a slight lean and there is very light wear to edges and corners of boards. Very light foxing and browning to edges and endpapers. No inscriptions. A clean and sound copy in wrapper that is NOT price-clipped but is slightly rubbed and worn to extremities with two small pieces of tape internally to bottom of rear joint and bottom of where rear flap meets rear panel. Rear panel is slightly soiled and there is a tiny scratch mark to centre of spine. SCARCE. First issue points are as follows:Page 25, Line 1: 'It had do to with'. Page 75, line 9: 'tie a shoeleace'.In the first impression on page 134, lines 25-26: 'His friends call him "Boofy"'. In the second impression that was updated to Duffy. Fleming liked to add his frends names or nickames onto characters and in this instance a friend objected.

In very scarce printed glassine wrapper that has ONE SHILLING NET near the foot of the front panel, with lists of Warne publications to both flaps plus 6 Peter Rabbit Books listed to rear cover, the last being "New Book for 1905. The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle." 10 coloured plates and line drawings to text. The first of Potter's works to be published in a large format and the details of her engaging watercolours are even more enjoyable on this scale. The colour plates are printed on one side of the quality paper; the other side is blank. There is occasional very light foxing to a few pages. The lower edge of the boards are very slightly faded. Apart from less then 5mm missing at the head of spine the wrapper is complete and uncreased. SIGNED IN FULL WITH PLACE AND DATE (1915) to title page, no other inscriptions or dedications.Frontis. Red cloth gilt, slight lean to spine. Pages lightly rippled otherwise clean and sound. This book has belonged to a local family for over 100 years. Doyle often stayed at Baskerville Hall in Clyro and was a friend of the family. There is documentary evidence linking Doyle with Ralph Hapton Baskerville who inherited the estate in 1905 as both their signatures appear on a deed relating of the sale of two farms to the estate.

With printed addressed postcard inserted, "From Sir William Golding, Faber & Faber Ltd., 3 Queen Square...." The Faber and Faber with address has been crossed out by Golding and a house name written on top in his own hand. Written on the card is "Signature herewith - Yours WG". Wood-block frontis in b/w by J. Pritchard. Staples not rusted, a remarkably fine copy of a very scarce pamphlet. This work was first printed in "The Listener". One of the scarcest of Golding's works. Unusual to find a signed copy.

Bound in contemporary panelled brown calf, gilt, sympathetically rebacked in matching brown speckled calf, raised bands, contrasting labels. Top half inch of title page removed and professionally repaired. Small portion at head of epistle dedicatory first page missing to vol. III, only top part of heading text missing to reverse. Pages occasionally stained but only lightly. A couple of neat 18th and early 19th century ownership inscriptions to vol. I. A remarkably clean and sound set of this scarce early translation with delightful folding illustrations, some of the outer edges of these sl. worn. Engraved device to title page and engraved tail-pieces. Handsomely bound in full mottled tan calf with very attractive gilt decorations to spine, marbled endpapers and page edges are red. There is a "B" to the tail of the spine which may indicate the bindery. WITH THE BOOK PLATE OF MARIO AND FIAMMETA WITT - see below for details. Spine slightly rubbed and lacks a tiny portion at tail. Prelims slightly browned with a couple of spots otherwise a remarkably clean and fresh copy of a very scarce item in a lovely binding. The Author and The Arvon Foundation. 2001. A unique item. This play was written for a fund raising dinner for the distinguished Arvon Foundation. The dinner took place on Sunday 18th November, 2001. The instructions for the play, placed at the end, states that the first two acts should be played after the guests have had their first and main courses. They will then be served with sweet course and coffee, during which each table can consider its verdict. Each table will be provided with a paper bearing three questions.... This script belonged to Cathryn Brichto, who organised the event and a copy of the covering letter to P. D. James, dated 17 April, 2005, asking Baroness James to sign her copy is tipped-in at rear, to provide provenance. P. D. James has signed the title page and has also provided a signed postcard of Michael Taylor's portrait of herself. This has been tipped-in to provide a frontis. for the bound play. Small 4to hardbacks in first issue blind-stamped aquamarine cloth, gilt with gilt parrot on leafy branch to upper boards. Outer edge of cloth lightly damp-mottled. 27 coloured plates by Benjamin Fawcett drawn by A. F. Lydon to each volume, 81 in total. Prelims foxed to all volumes. Front inner hinge visible to vol. I but sound. Small mark to gilt parrot on upper board of vol. II. Light unobtrusive name to front endpaper and small tear (1cm) to margin of one plate in vol. III. Generally a clean and sound set. SCARCE. The coloured plates were produced by the chromoxylograph technique and were enhanced by hand-colouring and some heightened with the use of gum arabic.

All hand-coloured plates present. Extra notes in pencil to beginning of vol. I on blank sheets. Pages browned and other slight signs of use but generally a very clean and sound set.

"From the Author" in Gibbon's own hand to blank opposite title page. This has offset lightly to title page. Bound in contemporary full brown speckled calf, worn at extremities, rebacked with original spine laid down. Original spine darkened as if scorched. Outer margins of e/ps. and title browned, some occ. foxing. Inner hinge visible but sound. The whole contained in a purpose made clam-shell marbled box with leather lettering piece. Norton 1. Though not published until 1761, Gibbon wrote this first work, in French, in 1758 when he was 21. He let Dr. Maty of the British Museum read it and on gaining approval revised and completed it in 1759. It was only published due to his fathers urging.
