London: Thomas ward/Joseph downing/Henry Woodfall, 1724. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good-/Near Fine. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. The restoration looks superb to my untutored eye. The books measure 14" x 9", collation is folio. The previous owners notes read , "1/2 morocco." The style is spine and tips(diagonally) done in leather, balance in marbled green/tan paper, pastedowns and endsheets are heavy cream tone stock. Printing data on volume 1 "Printed for Thomas Ward in the Inner-Temple lane-1724." the collector has penciled, on the first pastedown, "2 vols, first edition, RCTY" (sic). Book commences with title page, verso blank, 1 page advertisement to reader, verso blank, 5 leaves(10pages) of subscriber names, followed by a TOC numbered from 827 to 836. London: Richard Baldwin, 1689. 3rd Edition . Hardcover. Very Good+/None. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The owners notes and my observation agree with Wing number H3783. This 73 page pamphlet has been placed inside hard red cloth boards, with a gilt lettered black spine label. The boards measure 8'' X 6 1/2'', The text measures 7 3/4'' X 6'' fore-edge to gutter. Collation is primarily quarto. After the restored endsheet (no preliminary sheets appear) is the title page. There is a small penned circled D at the upper right corner. Opposite this in the gutter margin is pencilled "edn., Wing number and placements." Verso title blank, followed by a 2 page TOC. Page 1 through 73 appear next followed by another blank beige replacement endsheet. The text has minimal foxing and two characteristics worth noting. NY: Grosset & Dunlap, 1953. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good-. Blue tweed boards, Nancy blue silhouette endsheets (not digger)- flap lists 30 titles with Velvet Mask last. Dark blue Nancy front board, wraparound jacket w/ Nancy holding magnifying glass on spine. Velvet Mask is also last listed last in books interior summary. Secret of the Jade Ring (Dana) and Forbidden Chest (Bolton) are final listed titles on back flap and back panel respectively. 211 pages. 2 odd flaws are noted. The verso of the 2nd endsheet had what I take to be a production roller mark, pale brownish, mild, in attempting to lightly erase (art gum) the soft text experienced a hint of abrasion. This is the blank sheet prior to the 1/2 title page. Parenthetically, only the 2nd time in 20 years I have experienced this. . . Additionally, I surmise that the last endsheet was inadvertently glued at its forward extremity to the paste down. The PD is the fixed final sheet. London: Thomas Newton, 1685. Presume 1st . Full-Leather. Good/No Jacket. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Balance of title and printing information, "Against the Late King, His Present Majesty, and the Government, As It was order'd to be Published by His Late Majesty. In The Savoy: Printed By Thomas Newcomb, one of his majesties Printers-1685." It seems reasonable to assert it as the first appearance of this much reprinted work and we do so for the following reasons. The collector's notes, which I have never caught wrong, with the rare exception of times passage causing reattribution, asserts in his penciled notes on the books first endsheet, verso, as follows, "By Thos. Sprat. Bp. of Rochester- S5065- First Edition-Large Paper copy in contemporary Morocco." Additionally the later printings seem to be done in a slightly smaller format. London/Cambridge: Pickering/Cambridge, 1840. First Thus . Hardcover. Good -/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. This entry is for all 5 of the listed books, the 2 book set re northern nations thru American Revolution and the 3 book set on the French Revolution. There is small difference in publisher attribution as indicated above, but the books are hard cover half bound calf (spine and diagonals for board tips) with balance marble boards and full marbled end sheets. They measure 8 3/4 x 5 5/8 ". They will be accompanied by a 6th book, Brockway's abridgement of the above titles, 1955, first printing, Simon and Schuster, spine sunned, some edge abrasion, gift inscription first end sheet, no marking. Richard Cotes. Presume 1st . Full-Leather. Fair+/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Book measures 7 1/2 x 5 7/8 inches. Done in leather, ribbed spine, some restoration is evident. I am unable to locate a Wing or other listing to which to compare it but research continues. Balance of title and printer information, "Or A Discourse and Historicall Narration of the first XIIII yeares of King James Reigne." "London printed for Richard Cotes and are to be Sold By Michaell Sparke at the Blew Bible(sic) in Green 1651 Arbor John Drosehout Sculp. Lon." Collation is largely quarto. The interior commences with exotic marbled pastedown/endsheet (xlibris plate PD), including an odd, homely, reinforcing of the hinge. Verso 1st endsheet is blank and a blank leaf (likely both restorer work) follow. Some erased pencil is seen here. NY: Harper and Brothers, 1849. Later Printing, Revised . Full-Leather. Fair/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. From the title page, " Walker's Key to the classical pronunciation of Greek, Latin and scripture proper names. Revised and enalrged by Chauncey A. Goodrich." 2 notable "flaws" affect the leather binding, a separation at the front hinging of the spines top of nearly 2" and the spine itself has what seems to be a largely superficial cracking at its center, will attempt to show both in foto. The hard leather covers have other age appropriate scarring and abrasion all of a relatively minor nature. Upper tips have abrasion thru leather and lower back tip is notably bumped. The original owner has lightly penciled his name/date (1850) and so forth on the first endsheet and at the top of the title page. While the text has full edge marbling 2 issues are worth mention, top is age or dust darkened and the fore-edge may have had a few unopened… Leer más

It will be given in 2 sections, first the full title and prior owner's notes including citation/points, lastly structure. Title page continues, "With his Reasons for turning Roman Catholick; published by K. James. Found in the Strong Box. Printed in the Year MDCXCIV." Owner notes on loose browned paper, "Port, 12mo, old calf, (London) 1694. Nice copy of this scarce work. The famous portrait of King Charles knelling (sic, kneeling), of which it is said 'he is worshipping his Mistress Nellie Gwynn in a cloud above him, instead of his maker.' " There is ancient penned 1/2 page note top verso first endsheet re authorship (attributes Chas. II) and avoiding confusion of this item with the Basilike of Charles I. Price given on title page as 3s 6d., book does not have illustrated frontispiece in place. After first 2 endsheets, the Imprimatur is verso 3rd sheet, facing title page. Date 1715 appears on title page w/ imprimatur 1714. Suspect restoration occurred with replacement of endsheets and perhaps boards, (I surmise that spine is original) many years ago. 219 pages (including first 6 on which no roman numerals appear) followed by 5 non-paginated. Pages numbered in roman numerals thru 43, 44 thru 219 in standard English characters. Collated in octavo manner (with unsigned pages at front), size measures 7 1/2 x 4 7/8". Robert Barker and By the Assigns of John Bill, 1642. Later Printing . Unbound. Fair+/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Wing states A1326 (ANR.ED.) collation quarto, eight pages. The unnumbered title page has a four crown motif. This pamphlet, lacking stiff covers, is text only, string-tied at at least one location, though the deterioration of the hinging area has apparently compromised the other tying. The item is 6 1/2 inches by 4 3/4 inches. The paper is otherwise legible and decent given the items age. Some fox/stain. *We feel that books offered for internet sale should be described thoroughly and accurately. Books listed by Brass Dolphin are so described, and graded, using the strict, traditional standards. For this reason, we have virtually zero returns.*

Salem: W. & S. B. Ives, 1827. First Edition . Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. We assert the book as a first edition based on the appearance of the date 1827 and its apparent match with number 2243 in the Sabin which is available to us. Book measures 8 3/4" by 5 1/2", though Sabin says 22 1/2 cm. (1/2 cm difference). The book has 611 pages, two blank endsheets front and rear. First sheet is completely loose and that gutter is gapped though the hinge is holding. Last endsheet is also partially loose with gutter gapping, again hinge is holding. The text, while nicely legible throughout has about every flaw that could be specified. Previous owner's name first pastedown and title page. Two erased pencillings, minor, are evident first endsheet's corner and title page. The text's foredge has the odd spot or stain. Endsheets have a fair amount of foxing and edge scar. Cambridge: Rampant Lions Press, 1974. 1st Edition . Pamphlet w/ Stiff Cover, Wraps. Very Good+/No Jacket. Re edition given here as first. RL apparently does many limiteds, this pamphlet does not appear to be one. No additional printings, no statement. Mcbride and Ahearn do not seem to say, though the house may be associated with Cambrige University and the item has Same Date (1974) on title page and copyright page. Given its extraordinary scarcity as well, 1st edition thus seems more than likely. A fresh, unmarked copy done in mustard stiff paper covers with sewn binding rather than saddle stitch. The back panel has very minor wave area which I suspect is bindery or storage issue, the cover paper has other hard to see flaws, newish at first glance.

London: J. Humphries, 1690. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good-/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Balance of title, "Intituled The Case Of Allegiance Due To Soveraign Princes, Stated and Resolved." Collectors notes read "Wing J840." Wing and McAlpin seem to reference a 2nd, Wing 841, I presume and also 1690. Originally done as pamphlet, quarto collation with first signature "b" page one after title a page verso blank, 34 pages plus restored end sheets. Boards measure 8" X 6". Has been expertly laid into gray hard covers (our restorer assures me the glue is reversible) with black gilt lettered spine label. The title page and texts last page (and to a lesser degree the adjacent pages) have odd walnut colored smudges/stains. The balance of the text is minimally foxed and untrimmed, trace red edge stain.

London: Printed For The Author, 1692. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Balance of title: "by the people of England from the regal throne and the promotion of The Prince of Orange, one of the Royal family, to the throne of the Kingdom in his stead was according to the constitution of the English government and prescribed by it." This is a slender little pamphlet reworked in neat pale green boards, boards measure 7 7/8 x 6 3/8". The Wing #821, placements, and SJ name are penciled lightly on first, replaced, endsheet. The grade above may be thought of as a compromise between the newish boards and the aged text. The spine label is black leather with gilt and a hint of wear at its edges The reworking with beige pastedowns and endsheets is very nicely done and compliments the lightly age darkened but largely unfoxed text. The item is designated in the notes that accompanied it, and compares accurately with Wing A3754. The prior owners notes (Wings are penciled in the margin of the title page) reference "McAlpin 30.1 x 19.2 cm, (1) 67p. portr. frontisp, appointment of printer on flyleaf." As is our custom the grade may be thought of as a compromise between the newish hardcovers and the understandably aged text, hopefully the listed attributes will answer for specifics.This is a large format pamphlet placed in hardcovers, and has no frontispiece, the original text commences with the title page followed by the 1st page of text, collation code 'B'.
