Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Very Good hardcover first edition. No DJ (ha, ha). This is the quarto version (alphabetical letters appear at the bottom of every 4th page as a guide to the bookbinder), 11.75" x 7.75", of Alexander Pope's iconic masterpiece of marketing and poetic achievement. You may see this volume bundled (even in upscale auction houses such as Bauman's) as volume one of four volumes, but that is an anachronism! Pope gambled on an audacious move in 1717 by publishing his "Collected Works" at the raw young age of 29. He was already a significant force in the English literary world, but, just as today, only venerated masters at the ends of their careers published "Collected Works." na, 1879. No Binding. Fine/No Jacket. Autographed, handwritten poem by Lydia Maria Child, 1879. Excellent condition. 3" X 4 1/4". No tears or creases. Paper is in good condition and ink is still crisp and clear. Child was one of the most significant reformers of the nineteenth century U.S., writing and advocating for a number of causes, principally abolitionism, women's rights, and Native American rights. Born in 1802, she reached the height of her influence in the 1830s-50s. She died one year after signing this poem. Provenance of this document can be traced back to the early 1900s, when it was in the ownership of the inventor Harold Tifft. Tifft wrote copious notes in pencil on the back of the document (please see image) before selling it to a rare book dealer in the mid-1900s. A receipt of that dealer's sale of the poem to the family from whom I purchased it will be included with this sale.

Good cloth 2d printing of 1st edition with brown lettering on spine. No DJ. This is a copy presented by President Roosevelt to a pastor with a personal inscription and signature by the president on the front free end paper. The volume itself is in good condition: binding tight and straight. Two tears to top of spine (1/4-1/2 inch). Age fading to spine and cover. 471 pages. PRESIDENTIAL SIGNATURE!

New Yorkk: Terence & Elsa Holliday, 1932. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Good limited edition cloth SIGNED by T.S. Eliot with gilt lettering on spine and marbled boards. No DJ. This is #108 of 110 copies. Eliot's signature appears at the bottom of the edition number page just before the title page. The spine is straight and tight, but the pages show age toning and light smudging throughout. Some of this may be the result of exposure to moisture, but all are straight and legible. The frontispiece portrait of Dryden, done in red ink, is still in good shape but the red ink has bled through the page a bit. Does not affect the signature. See photos please. There is a 1/2 inch abrasion to the marbling pattern on the back cover. 68 pages.

New York: Thomas Y. Crowell. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Near Fine cloth first edition with gilt designs and lettering on green cover and spine. No DJ. No date of publication indicated but likely 1890. 12 volume set in original green cloth binding. Some shelfwear and rubbing to bottom of spines and covers . Light age toning to pages, but all bindings are tight and square. No markings, creases, or tears. Individual titles of works printed on spines.

New York, NY: J.B. Ford & CO., 1868. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Cloth green cover with gilt lettering, very good condition. No DJ. From the collection of E. J. Aston (a NC travel writer who published frequently with Greeley) and signed on title page by E. J. Aston. Includes a letter to Aston from Horace Greeley, dated August 19, 1869. Aston glued the letter into the front papers of the book. The letter has three folds and is signed by Horace Greeley. Binding is straight and tight. Shadows of plates on facing pages. Title page is loose and has some tanning. Many pages have normal tanning commensurate with age. Slight discoloration to front cover. Tear to cover on upper rear corner. Shelf wear to spine at top and bottom.

No Binding. Fine/No Jacket. Autographed typed poem, "The Jewish Problem." No date. Paper is lightly toned, slight fading to ink, but in excellent condition. 8 ½ x 11 inches. Shapiro (1913-2000) was an American poet whose work received the Pulitzer prize (1945) and the Bollingen Prize (1969) and garnered him a stint as Librarian of Congress. He served as editor of Poetry Magazine.

UK: na, 1923. 1st Edition 1st Printing. No Binding. Fine/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Handwritten (fountain pen) letter signed by Nobel prize winning poet Alfred Noyes on personal stationery, Nov. 21, 1923. The telephone number is angled at the left upper corner and original staple holes are parallel to that phone number, so I assume this note was stapled to other pages (probably the poems to be published). The note is a response to an editor (Deighton) agreeing to publish poems in an anthology. The note was folded once in the middle and once on the right edge. Some light penciled notes appear on the back. 5 x 7 inches.

India: Navajivan Publishing House, 1940. 5th or later Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Near Fine cloth 14th edition with gilt lettering on spine and black lettering on front cover and Fair DJ in protective mylar cover. Dated 1940 at the end of the preface, this is the 14th edition. Spine is straight and tight, gilt lettering darkened but clear and legible, shelf wear to top and bottom of spine, all corners sharp. No markings, creases, or tears. DJ is Fair, with significant tears, some closed, others not (1 inch V shaped tear at top of front cover, three inch tear at bottom of back cover, plus two creases across front DJ cover. Not ex lib, not clipped, no remainder marks. 420 pages.

1978. No Binding. Near Fine/No Jacket. Original, signed letter, from poet James Wright, dated August 23, 1978. Excellent condition. James Wright (1927-1980) won the Yale Younger Poets Prize in 1956 for his first collection of verses, The Green Wall. With The Branch Will Not Break (1963), he abandoned traditional meter for a more experimental poetry. Wright won the Pulitzer in 1972 for his Collected Poems. The confessional themes of his poetry were influenced by his friendship with Robert Bly, leader of the self-help Men's Movement. In 2004, Wright's son Franz won the Pulitzer in Poetry, making the Wright's the only father/son pair to win a Pulitzer in the same category.

Book condition: near fine, slight fading on title block on spine. Signed by U.S. Congressman Robert T. Ashmore, 4th District, SC, who was a member of the Committee on House Administration which commissioned the book. Inscribed to South Carolina textile magnate James Self. This is a comprehensive listing of art and sculpture in the capitol, with hundreds of gorgeous black and white photos. Provides the history of each piece. 425 pages. Index. 10 ½ x 8".

Some spotting visible on spine of volume I when held at an angle. Tissue over frontispiece has a 1/4 inch closed tear in volume I. Tissue is shaken and creased in volume II. Shadowing of tissue on title page in both volumes. Inscription and bookplate inside front covers of both volumes. Light creasing to top and bottom of spine on volume II. Otherwise pristine. Pages still uncut. No creases or markings. Private owner, not ex-library. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only complete 2 volume set of the first edition available anywhere at present.

1922. No Binding. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Autographed handwritten note, December 1, 1922, Oxford. Paper is in excellent condition, ink is a little faded but still very clear. Slight crease to bottom left corner. Remnants of adhesive and paper on back with pencil markings. 4 ½ X 7 inches.

No Binding. Near Fine/No Jacket. 24mo - over 5 - 5¾" tall. Autographed letter on Saturday Review stationery, no date. The letter is a rejection addressed to the poet Edsel Ford with extensive critical feedback and an invitation to revise and resubmit "or just tell me to go to hell." Ciardi was poetry editor of the Saturday Review from 1956-1972, so the letter could have been written anytime during that tenure. I have not done research to verify whether Mr. Ford revised the poem or if it was ever published. 3 pages on small stationery sheets, 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches, green paper. Crease at left upper corners of 2d and 3d sheets, possible trifold creases for mailing.

Fine hardback limited first edition SIGNED by author with gilt lettering and designs on green leather. Gilt textblock. Silk ribbon placemarker, etc. Marbled end papers. A pristine collectible. No markings, creases, or tears. 372 pages.

Bostson: The Atlantic Monthly Press, 1923. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Very Good cloth first edition with gilt lettering on cover and spine SIGNED by Lord Charnwood at end of preface. The signature appears beneath a glued in image of Charnwood opposite the table of contents. Rather unorthodox, but there you go. The gilt lettering on the spine is quite faded but still legible. 1/2 inch light colored scuffing to top left edge of spine and back cover. There is also a glued in newspaper clipping in the front endpaper with corresponding discoloration of opposing front free end paper. Blue pencil markings of former owner in front endpapers and occassionally as underlinings and parentheses throughout the text (always in blue pencil). Binding is straight and tight. No other creases or tears. Index. 232 pages.

Beijing: Foreign Language Press, 1981. 2nd Edition . Soft cover. Fine/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Softcover, second printing. Fine. Sun fading to spine, but otherwise flawless. Softcover (with flaps like a dust jacket that fit around the first pages). 264 pages. 5" x 7 ¼". The book has held up quite well because the Chinese Communist Party spared no expense in making sure it did so. Acid free paper, card covers, etc. They also apparently paid these three scholars to toss objectivity out the window. This is the official Chinese Communist Party version of Chinese history as set forth for the first time in English for the view of foreigners in 1964, but, just as revealing, revised slightly following Nixon's visit in 1972. Good luck finding this anywhere else!

1831. No Binding. Fine/No Jacket. Autograph letter signed, 3pp, 4to, place illegible, 23 July 1831. Thomas Hamilton to Philip Hone, thanking him for "the kindness I have uniformly experienced from you during my stay at New York" and also in Canada: "I set off by the packet tomorrow, circumstances having occurred which make me anxious to reach Engd. as soon as possible. From your friends Colonel Cockburn at Quebec & Mr. Gates at Montreal I recd. every attention. . . . the former Ld. Aylmer was likewise good enough to give me a letter, but from what Colonel Cockburn said I feel assured that yours alone wd. have been quite sufficient to ensure me every kindness. Indeed I found few of the officers in Canada to whom your name & your hospitality were not familiar." Torn at wax seal (with loss of a few words of text); a little soiled along the folds, else good. She was not one of the authors in this volume but a significant figure in the education and psychological professions in the early 20th century.
