A very good set in original cloth. Rather torn and soiled dust wrappers. The detailed scientific report on Aurel Stein's third great Central Asian Expedition in which he covered nearly 11,000 miles in thirty-two months between 1913 and 1916, and pursued geographical as well as archaeological research. From Kashmir Stein followed the pilgrim route to Kashgar, crossed the Taklamakan desert to Khotan, and explored the Lop desert discovering the ancient site of Lou-lan. He revisited the "Caves of the Thousand Buddhas", pushed down the Etsin-gol and investigated Khara-khoto, the site first discovered by Colonel Kozlov. Hanoi: F.-H. Schneider, Imprimeur-Éditeur; Imprimerie d'Extreme-Orient, 1901-1976. Sixty-two volumes bound in sixty-four (Volume 11 lacking; volumes 44 & 52 each in two parts), in total 42,979 pages with 2,323 plates and 37 maps. Text largely in French. This set is handsomely bound in half calf, marbled boards, and is in very good condition. Volumes 32 and 46 have small tears to top of spine. A remarkable run of the foremost journal of studies on French Indochina and the surrounding regions. L'Ecole Francaise d'Extreme-Orient was founded by Paul Doumer, Governor-General of Indochina from 1897 to 1902, encouraged by the distinguished Indologist Sylvain Lévi. The foundation decree stated its objectives: to carry out research on the archaeological and philological exploration of the Indochinese peninsula, and to contribute, by every means possible, to the understanding of its history, its monuments and its languages; to contribute toward the study of neighbouring regions… Leer más

Berlin , 1922-28. Five volumes folio, in total 293 pages, 167 plates, 51 in colour, 259 illustrations, 61 maps and plans. Ergebnisse der Kgl. Preussischen Turfan Expeditionen. A very good set in original boards, neatly rebacked in calf to original style. Volume I with minor library marks. This set lacks Volume IV, Atlas zu den Wandmalereien, published in 1924 and Volume VII, Neue Bildwerke, 1933. There were four German expeditions to Turkestan between 1902 and 1914. The first, led by Grunwedel, worked at several sites in the Turfan Oasis in 1902-03, notably Karakhoja (or Khocho), Sengim and Murtuk. Forty-four crates of the finds, clay and wood figures, woodcuts, manuscripts and wall-paintings, were despatched to Berlin. The second expedition, 1904-05, was led by von Le Coq. He spent three months methodically investigating Karakhoja before moving his attention to the temple complexes of Sengim, Bezeklik and Toyok. In August he moved to Komul (Hami). First edition, folio (37 x 27 cm), pp. 24, [1, blank], [6-1, Arabic text], [1, blank]; printed on vellum in Latin, German, and Arabic; the 6 pages of Arabic text with elaborately illuminated headpiece, tailpiece, and text frames, in gilt and colours, mingling elements of Mamluk, Indian, Iranian, and Ottoman illumination with European designs. The headpiece signed "A. Brückner pinx: 1816". Bound in late nineteenth-century half morocco with boards of gilt paper blind-stamped in elaborate Japonist patterns, corners and spine blind-ruled, spine with raised bands and morocco label; very slight wear to edges, and one short split to top of upper board's hinge, but both joints firm; a few areas of marginal discolouration to the vellum, but illumination clean and vibrant. A very good copy. A remarkable work of book art, combining printing on vellum in Arabic and roman scripts with a fascinating scheme of illumination. This set weighs approximately 25 kg and may incur additional shipping charges. A very good set in original cloth. Spines professionally repaired, edges a little rubbed. A fully illustrated description of the famous group of Buddhist monuments at Sanchi with their wealth of figural and decorative sculpture.

First edition, two volumes, text in folio, 40 x 31 cm., pp.xii, 65; title-page and 48 plates, thirty-three in large folio, 64 x 51 cm., twelve in three colour, twenty-one in halftone, and fifteen smaller plates, 40 x 31 cm, of which ten in three colour, 5 in halftone. Plates have discretely stamped on reverse, "Printed in England". Overall a very good copy, but showing minor use and wear. Title page lightly spotted. Large plates slightly dog-eared at corners, a few with a small area of lower margin lightly water stained, but images unaffected. The text volume is in original wrappers, with small tears to cover, otherwise pristine. The smaller plates are in fine condition, preserved in their original envelope. The whole is contained in the original half-cloth portfolio. Rear cover of portfolio somewhat spotted, and minor tears to cloth spine. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1952-59. First edition. Two volumes, folio (46 x 36 cm), pp.xxvi, 290, 125 plates, 173 illustrations and plans, large folding map in 2 sheets; pp.xxiv, 300, 127 plates, 151 illustrations and plans. Volume I is 175 of 550 copies, Volume II is 107 of 550 copies. A fine set in original cloth, with rather torn and frayed dust-jackets. These volumes "remain essential instruments of knowledge in the field of early Islamic art and architecture... and the best that the field can offer to others" in Oleg Grabar's assessment in Muqarnas (Vol. 8, 1991, p.1), words which remain as true today as then. Grabar noted too that this edition, with the volumes "in their imperially gigantic original form" was physically unequalled by subsequent abridgements and revisions. Calcutta: printed by A.H. Hubbard, at the Hindoostanee Press, 1810. First edition, an extract from Asiatick Researches, Volume 11. 4to (27 x 22 cm), pp.[ii], (197)-292. A very good copy professionally bound in yellow morocco, with title page supplied. The first substantive published account of the Sikh nation. John Malcolm began to assemble materials for his history while serving with British forces in the Punjab in 1805, noting that "English writers, none of them had possessed more than very general information regarding this extraordinary race..." Malcolm made his own observations and notes in the Punjab, and acquired a number of Sikh manuscripts. When he returned to Calcutta, he interviewed a Sikh on his religion, and acquired a number of English translations of Sikh religious and historical texts from John Leyden. The demands of Malcolm's duties prevented him from compiling a full history, but his briefer text effectively glosses the period from the birth of Guru Nanak in 1469… Leer más

Second edition, with the author's last corrections and additions, pp.xliii, 473, 2 maps, 1 partially hand coloured and folding, the other coloured in outline, genealogical chart. A very good copy in original cloth, spine title in gilt. Spine faded, and with minor wear to head and foot. Joseph Davey Cunningham (1812-1851) sailed for India in 1832 after graduating with distinction from Addiscombe. In 1837 he was appointed assistant to Colonel Wade, political agent at Ludhiana. He was present at the meeting of Lord Ellenborough, Dost Muhammad and the Sikhs at Ferozpur in 1842. During the Sikh wars he served under Napier, Gough, and as aide-de-camp to Hardinge, the Governor-General, at the battle of Sobraon. After the war he was appointed Political Agent at Bhopal where he was commended by Hardinge "you have.. by your energy and promptitude, fully justified the favourable opinion I entertain of your abilities and character." A very good set in contemporary embossed cloth, gilt titles on spine. Professionally re-cased, heads and tails of spines repaired. Old wax seals on spines. A remarkably comprehensive chronicle of the history of Islam from the death of Muhammad to the accession of Emperor Akbar, drawing on Price's own translations from Persian sources, particularly Mirkhand, Khandamir, and Abu'l-Fazl. This was the first such chronicle published in English, and contemporary reviewers noted Price's methodical scholarship and his history's ambitious span. A history of the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States together with details of every aspect of the colonies at the turn of the century and biographies of prominent citizens.

The Hague,: Koninklijke Steendruckerij., 1867. Original chromolithograph, 31 x 44 cm approx. A very good example. Framed and glazed. Raden Saleh was born near Semarang in 1811. His uncle, the Regent, encouraged his early interest in drawing which was later stimulated by the Belgian artist A.A.J. Payen. He was taken to the Netherlands at the age of eighteen where he took drawing and painting lessons from Cornelius Kruseman, and later worked under one of the best landscape artists of the day, Andreas Schelfhout. He spent more than twenty years in Europe meeting many artists and notables before returning to Batavia in 1851. In 1847 he travelled to Algeria with Horace Vernet, the celebrated orientalist painter. The engraver, Carl Wilhelm Mieling, was born in Germany in 1815, and first worked as a lithographer and publisher in Rotterdam before moving to The Hague. The first western translation of this important biography of Salah al-Din ("Saladin") with the original Arabic text. This work was written during Salah al-Din's lifetime by one of his inner circle and is considered the standard biography of one of the greatest leaders of the second millennium. Unblemished and tight internally. A fascinating account of the journey of three young Persian princes through Europe to England in 1836 with the goal of freeing their father from British detention. Firmân Firmân, their father, was involved in a succession crisis over the throne of Persia and lost out to the British backed claimant, subsequently being detained by the British in Tehran. This account offers a fine narrative of their journey alongside description complex political situation in Persia. Etienne Aymonier (1844-1929), a French naval officer, was sent to Cochinchina in 1869. In 1871 he was appointed as one of the first Inspectors of indigenous affairs. He became deeply interested in Cambodian culture, studied the Cambodian language, and promoted the exploration of Khmer sites, particularly Angkor, begun by Delaporte and Harmand. He was appointed Resident at Phnom-Penh, 1879-81. In 1881 was charged with an archaeological mission to unexplored parts of Cambodia.
