Illustrated with two engraved title-pages by Francesco Villamena (1566-1624) in the monumental style with a large architectural border and the title written in ink. The coat-of-arms drawn in manuscript in the title-page are of the arms of the Borgia Family and the engraving of the title-page border is in an early, unrecorded state. Pen and ink initials in of Federico Cesi drawn in the lower boarder on the engraved plate. Full 18th century sheep binding, red leather label; spine and edges rubbed, but sound. Some browning to the paper stock, but no deterioration to the paper and not effecting the legibility of the text. Otherwise very good copy. Vellum spine over decorative blue paper wrappers, paper label with title in Italian on upper board and ink title in Italian on spine. Paper stock toned with age, a few leaves with staining in the margin, otherwise in good condition. Each image is beautifully and careful engraved, with rich detail and ornamentation. Each includes a printed product number as well as one in ink with a different item number and a price. Although there is no title-page or signatures of engravers, this large sales catalogue appears to be English as some of the engravings have English words of explanation engraved in the text. Descripción:
France, 1880. One hundred eighty-seven (187) original woodblocks (see photos 1 - 4) for illustrations of various dishes, surtouts, kitchen equipment, etc., that appeared in works by Urbain Dubois (1818-1901). Information provided on back labels of single blocks (more on this below) identifies the following sources:  La Grand Livre des pâtissiers et des confiseurs La Cuisine de tous le pays La cuisine d'aujourd'hui La Cuisine artistique, étude de l'école moderne La Cuisine classique Given that each of these titles typically contained hundreds of illustrations and that identification of all of the woodblocks has not been achieved, it is unlikely that this group constitutes a complete set for any single title. It is possible that some were used in multiple works, but that remains to be verified. Dubois is a pivotal figure in the history of French cuisine and certainly one of the most prolific culinary authors of the Belle Epoque. He is credited with introducing service à la russe to… Leer más

1775. 4to. 270 mx 205 mm., (11 x 8 inches). 243 leaves, with some blanks between essays. Text includes numerous equations and hand drawn diagrams in the margins. 19th century vellum backed marbled paper boards, vellum tips, manuscript title on spine. A note in pencil, written in Italian, reads in part, "Purchased in the Compo di Fiori May 10, 1933." Born in Turin, Italy in 1736, Lagrange was locally educated and by the age of 17 had recognized his skills in the natural sciences and applied himself to the study of mathematics. He published his first essay on Newton's binomial theory in 1754 at the age of 18 and in 1755 became a life-long correspondent of Leonhard Euler who at that time was living in Berlin. For the rest of his life Lagrange communicated both in print and through letters with the most important mathematicians working in Europe including Riccati, d'Alembert, Bernoulli and Condorcet, to name a few. In 1756 Lagrange was elected to the Berlin Academy of Science and after years of waiting… Leer más

Firenze: (Torrentino), 1567. Small 4to. 227 x 155 mm., (9 x 6 inches). [8], 62 pp., wanting final blank. Title-page illustrated with a monumental architectural border in the mannerism style and floral and historiated initial letters throughout the volume.  Bound in 19th century decorated paper binding; some minor discoloration to the paper binding, otherwise very good.  Extremely rare printing of a contemporary treatise on the proportions of the human body, demonstrating the influence of Michelangelo's ideas of anatomy and the fine arts.  It was written by Vincenzo Danti, second son of the artists and engineer Giulio and brother of the mathematician Egnazio Danti, now remembered for his publication on architectural  perspective and Euclid.   Il Primo Libro is the only work by Vincenzo to survive and it was the first book in a series of fifteen projected studies that he intended to publish, based on the anatomical teachings of Michelangelo.  Danti grew up in Florence under the shadow of… Leer más

4to. 275 x 195 mm., (10 ¾ x 7 ¾ inches). [26], 751, 17 pp. Illustrated with an engraved title-page, an engraved portrait of the author, an engraved map of the Middle East by the noted engraver and cartographer Placido Donia, 10 engravings of antique alphabets in the text. Bound in late 18th century vellum, red leather letter pieces on the spine. Text with signatures that are brown, some light foxing throughout the text.
Rare first edition of a very rare work describing 'Paradise' or the 'Garden of Eden', the place where human life was first created. The work is organized in three parts; first a discussion of etymology of the word "paradise" and how it was used by Christian scholars over the centuries. The second part is a detailed description of the Middle East both during ancient and modern time. He describes the travel, navigation, geography, and character of the people and for today's researcher this is the most important part of the book. It should be noted that information about the… Leer más

Two parts on one volume.  Large 8vo.  280 x 190 mm., [11 x 7 ¼ inches].  [18] including a blank leaf, 161, [1] ff.; [16], 146 ff.  Large woodcut frontispiece introducing the second part of an image representing and a printer's device which appears three times.  Bound in contemporary vellum; spine stained brown, probably by the original glue and some spotting to the boards. First edition of this important book of epigrams and love poetry by Lancino Curti, published posthumously by his nephew Gaspare della Chiesa. Curti's work constitutes one of the most important sources of the cultural life of Milan from the end of the 15th and the first decade of the 16th century.  In particular it documents the court of Lodovico il Moro, the French occupation of Milan in 1499, the exile of Lodovico, expulsion of the French by the Swiss and the instillation of Ludovico's son Massimiliano to the throne, and his removal in 1512 when the French… Leer más

First Edition. 8vo.  195 x 120 mm.  (7 ½ x 5 inches).  (2), 144, (2) pp. Giovanni Battista Gherado d'Arco (1739-1791), was born and educated in the north of Italy in the territory known as the Southern Tyrol, near the city of Trento. He moved to Mantua following his cousin Carlo Firmian, a minister of state for the city. D'Arco continued to study economics there and became an important member of the civil service and contributor to the literary life of his adopted home. He was a member of the enlightened class, writing plays and satires in addition to his scholarly work on the economy and government. In Della influenza del ghetto nello stato, D'Arco studies the impact of the Jewish community on the economy of the city, especially as it relates to lending money to support agricultural production. He outlines the limits of the Ghetto participation in general economy and following the theories of colleagues Giovanni Battista Vasco and Pietro Verri,… Leer más

New York: Edward Bierstadt, 1866. Image size including text: 425 x 705 mm., (16 3/4 x 27 7/8 inches). Steel engraving by James Smillie after a painting by Albert Bierstadt that was completed in 1863.  Signed in Pencil by both Bierstadt and Smillie. A few brown spots removed by expert paper conservator.  Excellent condition.      "This painting is the major work that resulted from the artist's first trip to the West. His intention to create panoramic views of the American frontier was apparent by December 1858, just before he embarked on the trip. In early 1859 he accompanied a government survey expedition, headed by Frederick W. Lander, to the Nebraska Territory. By summer, the party had reached the Wind River Range of the Rocky Mountains in what is now Wyoming. Bierstadt dubbed the central mountain in the picture Lander's Peak following the colonel's death in the Civil War. This was one of a number of large works painted after Bierstadt's return from these travels. It was completed in 1863,… Leer más
