Hardcover / Binding in full green morocco with lettering and Dante's head as bronze sculpture per inlet to front cover. Binding by Douglas Cockerell, signed "WHS", during his directorship of W.H.Smith & Son (1905 - 1914). The manuscript is on excellent paper, watermarked O.W.P. & A.C.L. [O.W. Paper & Arts Co. Ltd., established by English painter John William North (1842-1924) in 1895]. The binding rubbed and with some small damages, in need of some minor restoration but overall still very good. The interior, the paper and the artwork all in excellent condition besides one of the juxtaposed photographs (Filippina Lippo) removed from the manuscript with some residue of the photograph remaining and some of the photographs with some dogears and minimal discoloration. In 1682 Robert married Francis Courthorpe, the daughter of Sir Peter Courthorpe of Courtstown and Little Island, co. Cork. Their son William Meade was born in 1685. William was Rector of Ballymartle, Dunderrow and Ringroane, and was made Dean of Cork in 1736. The Ballymartle family were an off-shoot of the Meade family who later became Earls of Clanwilliam. Rev. Archive of a fantastic series of 42 Autograph Letters (signed) / Manuscript Letters (signed) by Sir Augustus Foster, British Diplomat and British Ambassador to the United States of America, prior and at the outbreak of the War of 1812, Recipient of the 'Declaration of War' on the "HMS Colibri" (June 28th, 1812), Ambassador to Denmark (1814-1825) and Ambassador to Sardinia (1824-1840). The letters were written between 1815 and 1841, during his time as Ambassador of Denmark (Copenhagen) and from his posting in Turin, as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Savoy-Sardinia [Piedmont-Sardinia]. Fortyone (41) of the letters are addressed to his friend, Sir Charles Stuart, Baron Stuart de Rothesay (1779-1845), Secret Agent, Diplomat, privy councilor as well as British Ambassador to France and Ambassador to Russia and the Duke of Wellington's distinguished administrator in Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. Henry David Aiken (1912–1982), U.S. philosopher. Aiken was born in Portland, Oregon, and taught at the universities of Columbia, Washington, Harvard (1946–65), and Brandeis (1965–80), specializing in ethics, esthetics, and the history of philosophy. He was influenced by the British analytic movement, by the American naturalists – especially Santayana, and by David Hume's moral and political writings, some of which he edited. Among the works he wrote are The Age of Ideology (1957), selections including a commentary on 19th-century thought; Reason and Conduct (1962), a collection of essays in moral philosophy; and Predicament of the University (1971).
