This appears to be a one-of-a-kind autographed single volume of Lord Jim. The book itself has been masterfully rebound (hardcover) by the incomparable Lehmann Bindery in full Oasis (English) goatskin leather. Hand sewn silk headbands. Firenza: Leo S. Olschki. A truly magnificent and rare handmade volume -- limited in this edition to 300 copies, of which this is #164 -- created on the 700th anniversary of the Divine Comedy. The book features beautifully reproduced woodcuts from the 1491 Venice edition, embossed leather over full wooden boards with brass clasps, bosses, a bust of Dante and handmade, watermarked paper. Last (but not least) this copy was inscribed (1926) by Giuseppe Garibaldi II, grandson of THE Giuseppe Garibaldi and himself a noteworthy Italian soldier/adventurer. Along with a gorgeous clamshell box, one leather strap and brass clasp were provided by the expert Lehmann Bindery. New Haven: Yale. Important and unique piece of World War II history. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, TOSHIKAZU KASE, high-ranking Japanese diplomat who took part in the signing of the treaty of surrender on the USS Missouri in 1945. Kase was also Japan's first ambassador to the United Nations. Inscription reads: "Mr. Frderick Moore -- With deep appreciation for his understanding of and friendship for Japan, The author, Toshikazu Kase, September, 1951." Possibly inscribed to the Frederick Moore who authored "With Japan's Leaders." Book has light soiling, rubbing, and age toning and lightly bumped corners. Dust jacket, now in protective mylar, has sunning at spine, and light rubbing overall. Minor edgewear includes small tears and chips that are somewhat more pronounced at extremities.
